Gorge View Cottage is a sustainable four-star (gold) self-catering holiday cottage for two, nestling in the foothills of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Situated in a quiet lane in Cheddar, the cottage has uninterrupted and panoramic views to the famous and spectacular Cheddar Gorge.
Originally an old gardeners cottage, it was recently fully renovated to exacting environmental standards whilst maintaining its natural charm, with attention paid to sustainability and comfort throughout. It stands opposite the main Gorge View house, and guests are welcome to explore and relax in Gorge View's working permaculture garden.
For anyone needing a gentle break from the pressures of life Gorge View Cottage has it all; a haven for walkers and nature lovers, with easy access to stunning walks around the Mendips and the famous gorge. The caves, shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes all just a few minutes' walk away.
Cheddar provides an excellent base for exploring further afield. The beautiful city of Wells, Wookey Hole Caves, the Somerset levels and coast at Brean Down or Weston-Super-Mare, the market town of Glastonbury with its Tor, ancient Abbey and diverse shops are all within 15 miles. Bristol, Bath and Exeter are an easy and leisurely day trip away.
Gorge View Cottage has a fully equipped kitchenette with electric oven and gas hob, underfloor heating throughout, woodburning stove, free wifi access, smart TV with on-demand TV and film, and parking for one car. Walkers and cyclists are welcome, and we have secure storage for bikes.
Accès des voyageurs
The cottage is detached and standalone with an open-plan living room, kitchen and lobby area downstairs. Upstairs an open plan bedroom/landing with an enclosed private en-suite bathroom containing a wet-room style shower (but no bath), wash-basin and toilet.
Outside the cottage is a small patio with tables and chairs that catch the late afternoon and evening sun. Guests are also most welcome to use the house garden: sit out with views to the gorge, wander the many pathways, nose around our organic and permaculture veg plots, and in season grab a few strawberries, raspberries or blackcurrants, or some fresh herbs or salad leaves.

We live in the big house opposite and are mostly around. On arrival we'll show you around the cottage and mostly leave you to yourselves. But we emphasise that if you have any problems, or questions or queries, or just want advice, then we're more than happy to help. Do not suffer in silence.
The large house garden is also there to be shared and explored. You are welcome to sit out in the garden on sunny days. In season we're also happy to share some of our produce including strawberries (Cheddar is famous for these) raspberries, blackcurrants and lots of vegetables.
We have two very serviceable bikes we are happy to lend out for free. Just ask. They are not mountain bikes (so not for going up and down the Mendip hills) but perfect for around the village, out on the lanes across the levels or especially for going along the old Strawberry Line railway path.
If you bring your own bike(s) we offer secure locked storage in our large garden shed.
Also please note that our rates on non-AirBnB channels start at 2 nights and then as the nights booked increase to a full week we reduce the "per night" charge, and we work on a 3-season rate model. We have struggled to fit the this to the AirBnB model and so the "cleaning fee" will look excessive (it is not just for cleaning), but then the per night rates are lower than we'd normally charge. We hope that makes sense.

I live with my wife Mary in the main house opposite Gorge View Cottage, so are close by if you have questions about your stay, what to do in the area etc. We have lived in this area of Somerset for over 23 years and for the last 14 here at Gorge View. So we know it well.
Our joint passion is all things sustainable and that extends to our fairly large garden which we work using organic and permaculture principles. The garden gives us a lot of produce and in season we're happy to share some of this with guests. Guests are also welcome to explore and sit in the garden.
The cottage began as a small project to renovate the collapsing garage which was actually an old gardener's cottage dating back over 150 years. The small project grew to the point where we made it a fully rebuilt self-contained cottage to a very exacting environmental specification with materials used and equipment fitted etc. It was after it was completed that we thought to maybe rent it out as a holiday cottage and we are thrilled to have quickly gained Green Tourism Gold, and Visit England four-star gold standards. Find our website and check our blog for more up-to-date whitterings about what is going on.
