Description

Huge 2,000 sq ft apt within a 10,000 sf 1909 mansion, by walkable Mt Airy Village--"Best Philly neighborhood" says Money magazine. Hi ceilings, oak floors and big windows overlook trees & gardens...romantic or for family/group. Full kitchen, working fireplace. Easy to downtown too.

This home is grand yet relaxed, light-filled and airy. The magnate who built this Greek Revival mansion in 1909 created 10,000 sq ft of grandeur. 50 years later, his heirs converted one wing to their own complete home. Voila! It is the prime wing-- and itself 2,000 sq ft. (that's not a typo!) that is being offered.

ACCESS: Private entrance, great bones and beauteous interior features. Headed downtown? - it's only 18 min. by car or 20 min. by train. (You can walk or park free by the local station, four short blocks away.) Great for CONVENTION CENTER, HISTORIC DISTRICT, main TRAIN STATION and COLLEGES...If you're headed to Center City -- the local train is 4 short blocks away, parking here or there is free. The ride (approx $6) is about 20 minutes. The train stops essentially inside the convention center - you needn't walk outside to enter the show. Or park onsite at the mansion--free and ample.

DETAILS: Vintage decor and devices abound. 11' ceilings in several rooms. Mahogany pocket doors, quarter sawn oak floors, BIG clean windows with deep sills look out on BIG gardens and huge trees. The fireplaces have classic Mercer tiles. The kitchen is so 40s that it's almost a send-up... dishwasher and other appliances are relatively new. A grand piano (yes, you can!). In season, we can often share organic vegetables from of our farmlet.

Grand Room, solarium, kitchen, large portico and furnished terrace, one tiled full bathroom and two fireplaces...

BEDROOMS - 2 or 3, depending what u count

# 1: Queen bed with pillow-top mattress, and two big windows overlooking trees...(room enough to bring in another bed, if needed.). Also two comfy upholstered chairs and an ottomon.

#2: antique 'three-quarter' bed (bigger than a single -- cozy for twosomes if you're not too large), plus a twin bed. Big windows on three walls.

#3 - we often bring in a single bed to the solarium...

This home can work well for up to 5 people, $175/night... if you've a fifth person, ask about additional bed for solarium.
-----------------------------------
[Or add OPTIONAL contiguous apt: Two addtional bedrooms and 1 addit'l bathrm, sm kitchen, terrace...1,000 sq ft more -- add $110/night + one-time cleaning fee].
----------------------------------
FULL KITCHEN is yours -- Enjoy our vintage collection of kitchen wares. Plus French coffee presses and other cookware. Dishwasher, disposal. Kitchen is outfitted

BONES: The windows are broader than daylight and clean as a whistle. The lines of sight in every direction are rewarding. The house is a grand dowager -- though the grand room could use a paint job. Just so's ya know

CHILL: Curl up on the sofas, settee -- they're shabby chic so we don't worry.
Walk the garden and farmlet. Pick the berries in season, The terrace has plenty of comfortable seating and a.BBQ.
. Hang in the hammock in summer and fall..
Come winter, the fireplace can light up the great grand room.

SOME DEFERENCE need be paid :) for the vintage of this home. We lean toward the shabby chic and comfortable -- if you're looking for slicko, not so much.

FRIENDLY for FAMILIES (babies included) ... with a selection of period and new toys, 50s high chair...and various musical instruments for your inner child. Free Pack-n-Play, booster chair, car seat, stroller and cradle usually available. Small playground a block away. Bookstore has best kids' section in the city. Several dance schools and Philadelphia School of Circus Arts are within a mile.

For young parents and doting elders, the Nesting House nearby sells very affordable, very gently used, high quality baby/kids wares...new stuff too. Small playground equip. a short block away. Thurs mornings, for example -- Live music class for 6 month thru 4 yr olds at the Moving Arts studio here, Tues & Thurs mornings.

WALK TO: "Mt Airy Village" -- a vibrant intersection with popular food Weavers Way Co-op, the High Point Cafe (see Oprah's magazine...opens 7 am -- bakery on site), Big Blue Marble Bookstore, the Moving Arts studio, pop up shops, Philadelphia Community Acupuncture ($15-35/session), the Nesting House (baby/toddler bonanza), Springboard studio (meditation, chi gong), Philadelphia (Architectural) Salvage emporium-- And the woods! (Even tho we are definitely part of the city! Fairmount Park is the biggest city park in the U.S....). Commodore Barry Club (Irish Center), Germantown Jewish Center and several churches... Public Transpo too.

Nearby, a range of chef-led cafes and restaurants, varying from Geechee Girl to Mica (1 of 10 best emerging restaurants in the U.S.--per GQ magazine) to Iron Hill Brewery, Valley Green Inn, Heirloom, Tiffin, Mica, Cresheim Valley Grain Exchange, Goat Hollow and more. Within two miles-- charming and walkable Manayunk and Chestnut Hill districts for strolling, dining, shopping+cool consignment shops

ALSO NEARBY: Valley Green is the most famous hiking spot in Fairmount Park -- people come from far away, but it's less than two miles from our place. And yet... we really ARE Philadelphia! Plus public golf course, ice skating, adult classes in samba drum (instruments provided), dance, yoga, capoeira, meditation. You can even fish within a mile!

YOUR STAY. Longer stays welcome, up to four months. We prefer at least three days' reservation, but will consider shorter stays, esp.if mid-week or at the last minute.

LOCATION: On more than an acre in the heart of Mt Airy, Philly's famously treesy, enterprising, vibrant neighborhood. Money Magazine recently deemed Mt Airy "Philadelphia's Best Neighborhood"Easy drive to DC, NY and other expressways.

PARKING: ample and free street parking.

SHORT & SHORTER STAYS: RE: SHORT and SHORTER stays. Esp. during high season and over weekends, we tend to prefer two and three-night minimums. However, if another reservation is already back-to-back or if your request comes in toward the last day or so, we are happy to make exceptions. You are ALWAYS welcome to Inquire. For the shorter stays, kindly INQUIRE rather than REQUEST the reservation. We'll get right back to you...

MORE: We are family friendly, gay-friendly, elder-friendly (grab bar in bathtub/shower)... not so much pet-friendly though. Some accommodation for wheelchairs - please ask for details. A.C. in each bedroom, in season.

SUMMER TIME: Ceiling fans in several rooms -- as effective as they are silent; the house has a terrific micro-climate -- we won't be surprised if you skip the A.C. in the bedrooms!

Smoking, nyet! Please, no concert fans w/ pharmaceutical aspirations. Kindly respect the ecological priorities of our neighborhood. Enjoy!

Please Do NOT DISTURB TENANTS in the building or neighbors, thanks.

My first serious post-college job was to help design a large, upbeat exhibition about Philadelphia. I lived in LA then, but 20 years later, bought my own propaganda and moved here. What a great city to visit!--and this neighborhood (Mt Airy) is special. My son loved growing up here as well.
I'm pleased to help you figure out how to best enjoy the city...or leave you to your own plans if you prefer. My past includes 20 years in the museum field which overlapped with six years as a travel magazine editor.
So, yes, assume that i enjoy sharing the particulars. Self-employed since I could tote a little red wagon.
Oh, that's me in photo, at right. My mom's friend Shirley, at left. The 3rd photo -- with the braided bread -- is a sister. i included it inadvertently...but it's so hospitable in a Frida Kahlo way, that i've kept it, to say hello and welcome.
