Such a positive experience from start to finish. Communication was always prompt, and easy. John and Rachel's house is a home - a warm inviting home in vibrant Redern. They were so helpful and generous in catering for our baby and pet, and made it feel like we were family. I can't recommend their home enough. Just a brilliant stay for us, thank you!

We stayed at John and Rach's terrace house in Redfern for 2 months (Jan and Feb) while my husband did research at the university. We picked this rental because we needed a 2 bedroom house that was near the city and fit our budget (less than $90 per night). This was the only listing that fit the bill. Sydney is so expensive, it makes cities like London and Tokyo seem cheap in comparison, so finding housing that is affordable is very challenging if you want to be close to the city. We liked that we were within walking distance into the city (about 45 min to Hyde Park and to Darling Harbor and 15 min to trains), as well as close to the university. We were able to walk everywhere, which was great. We also appreciated the reliable WiFi, which was key for my homeschooling my two children, ages 11 and 9, since we are traveling the world for 7 months while my husband is on academic sabbatical. It was helpful to have a park and a grocery store right around the corner, and another park with a pool 10 min away. The next door neighbor, Charmaine, was very helpful and welcoming as well, and the beds were comfortable. The downside, which we were not prepared for, is that this terrace house is in Redfern, which is in a transitional neighborhood-- surrounded by public housing, people are drunk or high during the day and people homeless and shouting. The lowest point was finding out that there was a drug dealer (who had constant customers coming in and out) across the street. We were horrified. This is the price of affordable housing in Sydney, I guess, but I wish we had know ahead of time what Redfern was really like. We didn't feel comfortable walking at night, I found a needle in the park (so my kids had to stop doing cartwheels) and we didn't like having bars on the windows and doors-- it's a safety issue having no way to escape through a window in case of a fire. The terrace house itself is rather run down-- the painted floors kept coming up on our feet, the dishwasher smelled because of a backed up plumbing problem, the hot water was scalding hot (and not safe for kids), and the bars on the windows and doors felt oppressive. John and Rach are lovely and were very responsive. If you know what Redfern is like and you don't have children, this area is probably fine for you. But if you have children, please know what you're getting into. The good news is that our children got quite an education on poverty, homelessness, public housing and drugs and we felt part of the city by walking everywhere.

Myself and 2 friends overall had a great stay at Rachel and John's. They were very helpful in telling us where was good to eat and where the supermarket etc was, location wasn't far from the city, walking distance. A couple of things that we found wasn't so good was that there wasn't any heating and although a small heater was left it still got cold, but for the summer months I'm sure this wouldn't be a problem at all, and we were having to wait around 20 mins after each of us showered so the water would heat back up. Overall a great stay !

This is a wonderful apartment that is clean and well taken care of. The kitchen and the equipment in it are good quality and easy to use. It is five minutes walk from the supermarket and about twelve minutes from Redfern station. It is beautifully decorated and the bed was comfortable. I had enough storage space and having wifi was very useful too. A few disadvantages were the steep stairs that I had to be careful on. There is no TV and the bathroom is downstairs with the two bedrooms upstairs. Only a nuisance if you have to get up in the middle of the night. Very enjoyable stay apart from that.

Rachel and John set up the place wonderfully for us. They set up a second bed in a second room and there were clean linens and towels and everything you need. In addition the kitchen was fully setup for any cooking you would like to do. They were also prompt in responses and to answer any questions that arose (there were very few questions.) I would recommend this for anyone looking for a great location and a nice spot to begin exploring Sydney. It is close to the city and there are several amazing restaurants within a couple blocks of the house. Enjoy!

We have been married for 6 and a half years and have two still very little girls. We have been living in Sydney for almost 5 years. John is from the US and Rach is from the UK. John recently completed medical school and works in a hospital in Sydney and Rach works in public health.

Both John and Rach love living in Sydney and being close to the water and the Opera House.
