The Cottage on the Hill, is perched near the top of the hill around which the picturesque town of Chora is built. The cottage enjoys superlative sea views, as far as the islands of Santorini and Sikinos.
Built in the 1920s, the cottage is a charming two-storey residence, lovingly restored with respect for local architectural traditions to create a unique sense of Greek-island living with modern comforts. It has a total floor area of 75 m2, laid out over two independent levels (each with its own entrance) connected by a wooden staircase. The cottage is located just below the island’s most recognisable landmark, the Church of Panagia Gremiotissa, built in 1797.
The lower level is literally built into the rock, making it very cool in summer and warm in winter, so there is no need for air-conditioning. It comprises three separate spaces: a cosy dining area with built-in couch and wooden chairs, a rustic-style kitchenette and pantry, as well as a bathroom with WC, shower and wash basin.
This level, opens onto a delightful private garden with built-in seating and a wooden table that is ideal for al fresco dining under the stars. There is also an outdoor shower. The garden affords not only stunning views but also fresh ingredients such as rosemary and thyme for guests’ in-house cooking!
The upper level consists of the living area and the “loft-style” bedroom. Here, the ceilings are high and – thanks to natural bamboo insulation – the spaces are cool and airy. The living area has a long, built-in sofa with cushions/pillows, on which two children or adults can comfortably sleep. The interior is uncluttered and tastefully furnished with items acquired by the owners on their travels around the world.
Separated from the living area by a light curtain for added privacy, the bedroom features a handmade wooden construction for two double beds in one-up, one-down bunk arrangement, which is ideal for a couple with one or two children.
On this level, the living area opens onto a beautiful veranda that offers breathtaking views. With comfortable built-in seating all around and select pieces of outdoor furniture, the veranda is perfect for relaxing with a drink, socialising with friends, or just drifting off to sleep under the starry sky.
