Alcoutim is a charming village situated on the banks of the River Guadiana, the border between Spain and Portugal. It is the centre for the surrounding area has many amenities incl. cafes, bars and restaurants as well as mini-market, bank, library, chemist, Post Office and a Tourist Office.
Across the river is the typical Andalusian village of Sanlucar De Guadiana where one can experience Spanish life and of course a Tapas! A regular ferry service runs during the day.
The river and countryside on both sides provide a wonderful landscape for outdoor activities such as walking, mountain biking, kayaking, birdwatching and fishing. Local bike and kayak hire is available as well as boat trips up the river. for the more adventurous there is a 800m Zip Wire across the river!
During the summer the River Beach in Alcoutim is a pleasant place to bathe and enjoy the sun or go to the shaded gardens for a picnic.
For a day out, you can visit the lovely town of Tavira, or Ayamonte in Spain and their beaches nearby. Or head north into the Alentejo region and the stunning town of Mertola.
A hire car is recommended as it allows for flexibility. Faro airport has many hire car companies with competitive rates. Free parking is available outside or near to the house.
If you are taking public transport there is a daily regular train and bus service between Faro and Vila Real De Santo Antonio (VRSA) 1hr.
There is a bus to Alcoutim from VRSA but it only runs Monday to Friday.
The owner is prepared to come to VRSA to pick up guests for an extra charge. We have a seven seater car. Please contact the owner in advance if you would like this option.

We expect all guests to behave with due respect to the neighbours and people of Alcoutim.
Pets are allowed on the basis they are quiet and well behaved to both people and other animals.
Smoking is allowed on the premises but ONLY in the outside areas, NOT indoors.
My partner Christian and I have lived in the area for the last twenty years. We have two teenage daughters who go to school locally. We bought Casa Andorinha as a ruin in 2004 and spent the next six years rebuilding it which was fun but hard work!
We all like to go sailing or camping for our holidays, but one day we will stay somewhere on Airbnb!
