This quintessential Maine cottage is located on beautiful Swan lake near the town of Belfast. Enjoy gorgeous sunsets on your own bit of beach and listen to the loons at night as you star gaze...or watch an eagle swoop down and grab a fish from the lake. The perfect place to relax and just disconnect. A true New England getaway.

Le logement
A beautiful summer cottage on a spring-fed lake, five miles inland from Mid-Coast Maine's ocean, this has been our private summer home for over 35 years. Our children are grown and gone with their own families, and so, we have opened it up to rent to selected guests who will love it and care for it as much as we do.

Built in 1924 in a pine grove secluded from the eyes of neighboring cottages, Birchview is large, 2,500+ sq ft and completely furnished; 3-bedrooms with new queen-sized beds, one of which also has a child's bed; 2 full bathrooms; 32-ft eat-in kitchen; a 12 foot dining table in the lake room to enjoy your meals while watching for loons, eagles, and boats; the library-den has two comfy sofas, a reclining chair, fireplace, thousands of books, and hundreds of family-friendly video tapes; an upstairs living room (adjacent to the bedrooms) also has sofas and overlooks the lake. We face west and are blessed with the most beautiful sunsets imaginable!

Enjoy our private beach on a pristine lake fed by 3 fresh-water springs. Swan Lake is small, only 3 miles long, and is a quiet lake. You may be lucky to spot three boats per day. For those who worry that a Maine lake may be cold, let us assure you that the water temperature is usually 76 degrees, very refreshing. As a teacher I must tell you that I was gleeful to experience my first September in retirement at the lake. I can barely describe how delighted I was to learn that the lake is still very warm and highly swimmable. September is now my favorite month. The days are warm, the nights are beginning to cool, and a hint of that fabulous Maine fall color begins to show on the Sugar and Red Maples and the Paper and River Birches. Here's hoping another retiring teacher may learn to love Swan Lake in September, too!

Accès des voyageurs
Guests will have full access to the cottage, but please note that Birchview is not wheel-chair accessible. (The cottage itself is two floors plus a loft.) There is a short, easy down-hill walk from the private parking area to the second floor level of the cottage, a more circuitous route to the first floor of the cottage, that while delightful, involves more steps to negotiate. There is another short stairway down to the lake. We must insist that all guests be ambulatory.

Autres remarques
The cottage uses lake water. It is suitable for bathing and washing dishes, but we no longer drink or cook with it. Bottled water will be provided.

Cell phone coverage cannot be guaranteed; it depends on your phone and carrier.

We suggest that first-time guests to Maine try to arrange a two-week stay because there is so much to do and see, all within driving distance: Acadia National Park; Bar Harbor; whale sight-seeing and boating adventures; Mt. Katahdin, the northernmost point of the Appalachian Trail; Belfast, a very charming harbor town with lots of art galleries; Camden, the harbor town which Walter Cronkite called the most beautiful in America; Old Orchard Beach with big ocean waves to jump around in, and Funtown a fantastic water park which delights children and adults alike. For lighthouse buffs, there are several in the area; breakwaters, too. The ferry boat in Rockland goes to the famous islands off the Maine coast and will accommodate cars, bikes, and pedestrians. For golfers, there is a wide array of courses within a half hour drive of the cottage.

I am very blessed, not only with wonderful children and grandchildren, but also with parents who loved New England and taught me as a child the joys of lakeside living on Lake Winnespesaukee, N.H. I am now a retired high school teacher, and it is this wonderful profession which gave me the freedom to spend every summer on Swan Lake, Maine, with my own children. From the day school ended until the day before it began again, we delighted with being away from the hustle-bustle of life in suburban Washington, D.C. Family is very important to me. For this reason I am looking forward to meeting families who would like to explore Maine and enjoy our quiet lake. (My cottage is not the place for wild partying.) Last summer I was privileged to take my 15-year-old granddaughter to Europe for a month. We enjoyed Rome, Florence, Venice, London, and Paris. How happy I was to see familiar places through her young eyes! Travel is key to me; I also like cruising, genealogy, art history, interior design, reading, writing, research, painting, pets, and people!
