Andrew and Elizabeth have created a heavenly wilderness experience that is perfect for solitary or couples retreat, a family reunion, or more! We had planned this weekend for months and were more than thrilled with the location, the accommodations, and the warmth of our hosts. Everything was anticipated that we could need and want. Shower outdoors gazing at the red-stone cliffs made famous by O'Keefe! Sleep on beds under the stars observing the Milky Way. Wake to a symphony of birds. Hike to ancient ruins - it is all there. Note that even mountain bikes are not really much use here, however, as the extremely sandy roads are only suitable for walking or 4-wheel drive. Also, the Rio Gallina is seasonal so plan accordingly. Otherwise, there is no end to what fun you can have - or how quiet you can be. We would love to be back in other seasons.

David gave us an excellent welcome but we were unable to contact him again. The refrigerator was large and the kitchen was well equipped with all kinds of cooking tools available. We grilled our dinner with the fresh garden vegetables David picked for us and had fresh salad while we were there.

Réponse de Andrew And Elizabeth :
Thank you for the review. We will get more battery storage for the cabin so that early fall guests will not run out of electricity. Unfortunately the sun moves too far south in October, and the photo-voltaic panels cannot keep up with demand. It's usually only a problem in the remote wilderness in winter. Guests are asked to not feed the barn cats, but unfortunately some guests had done so and the cats are now annoying people. We are discouraging the cats by having water bottles handy to spray water at the cats, and they are slowly learning to leave people alone.

Words can't describe what a wonderful experience we had. The Canyon is beautiful beyond words, the Ranch Casita was warm, welcoming, and stocked with fresh vegetables. The possibilities to rest and rejuvenate in the canyon's grand silence or hike in quiet beauty are endless. Elizabeth and Andrew were wonderful hosts...thanks for the fresh eggs and produce. Yum! This is a place we hope to return to many times in the coming years.

Wow. We can not recommend a stay at Gallina Canyon Ranch enough. If you're dreaming of a peaceful retreat in which you can just simply soak up the beauty of the Earth, then this is your place. My husband and I stayed at the Wilderness Ranch Casita for two nights and found it to be a comfortable refuge after a long day of hiking the property. We ate our meals on the porch-with-a-view and chuckled at the begging kitties. The kitchen was fully-stocked with everything we could need. Fabulous tasting water and no problems with the hot water in the shower. The composting toilet will surely be a new experience to most but we both agreed that it was easy and amazingly 100% odor-free. My favorite part of the home was the beautiful artwork and great library to peruse. Oh and the sleeping deck! Sadly, we were too tired at night to even make our way up there but SO did enjoy having our morning coffee there amongst the hundreds of curious hummingbirds. When we return (& we will be returning), we plan on spending more time in that magical spot. We hiked into the Anasazi cabin and rested there a bit in its cool hammock. We thought it would be a great place to stay....more like glamping than the casita. The outdoor shower there is ridiculously cool with its unbelievable views. And a fun swimming spot is right at that site, as well. We continued on hiking and made it all the way to the Remote Cabin 4 miles in, crossing the Gallina riverbed 13 times. But before reaching that, we found flags that led off-trail to fascinating petroglyphs carved into the canyon wall. To see them up close & personal, and to feel like we'd discovered them ourselves was one of my favorite memories from that day. The Remote Cabin looks like something out of a movie. Truly remote & would be a wonderful place to completely relax, rest, and ponder life for a while. I want to mention the drive into the ranch. It indeed took us over an hour to travel the 15-16 miles back. While absolutely breathtaking and an adventure indeed, it can be sketchy (narrow, rocky or rutted) in places. We were certainly thankful that the road was nice & dry for us. I do know that David/Andrew will come pick you up if the conditions for driving are too dangerous for the type of car you're driving. We were in a small convertible and besides some awful-sounding times when rocks would bash against the underside, the drive was fine. Also, bring all the groceries you'll need because I promise you will not want to drive out in search of anything during your stay. This all said, it was an unforgettable stay that we can't wait to recreate again. Thank you, Andrew & Elizabeth!

I can't rave enough about this beautiful place! It felt like home immediately and I'm definitely homesick already! Andrew met us with a delightful ball of gamboling puppies and showed us all 'round the ins and outs of the casita. They'd already put fresh eggs from their chickens (hands down the most golden yolks I've ever seen - and I have friends who raise chickens in Austin), as well as fresh picked squash. Andrew asked us if we liked salads and when we said yes, he showed up a little later with 2 heads or red and 2 heads of romaine from their garden. What a treat and we felt so spoiled! It's an old adobe that's been added on to, run on solar power, with a composting toilet. The water is sweet and delicious, from their spring - a real treat since the last time I had "real" water was when my parents had land in the foothills of Colorado in the 70s/80s. The house is sweet, cozy, and comfy, and fabulous for those who deeply appreciate rustic charm. The views from the casita's deck and the sleeping deck offered a never-ending light show as the sun moved across the sky. Could've stayed there forever watching! At night, it's absolute quiet and absolutely dark, just the way I like it - and rarely experience. During the day, you hear the happy, bustling sounds of the farm below you. We regret that neither we or Elizabeth and Andrew had the time to connect and trade stories. Next time! We took our time (about an hour) driving in the 16 or so miles from Highway 84 because recent torrential rains have left the roads a bit ragged. But that was not a bad thing: it gave us time to thoroughly soak in the Chama Canyon Wilderness on the way. Make certain you've stocked up on any supplies you need: there's no "corner store" to pop over to! 8-) All I can think about is that I can't wait to return for a much longer period next time. I'd love to try out their remote retreat as well.
