Description

Very large, bright, and sunny double room in a spacious and peaceful house close to the seashore near Rosmoney Pier. Westport 10 mins drive. Very comfy bed, an armchair, and a writing desk. Own bathroom en suite.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome!

Spacious, warm, and very peaceful house in its own grounds, 10 minutes walk from Rosmoney Pier. Well behaved dogs are welcome! Your room is very spacious, with a bed that everyone says is one of the best they have encountered on their travels, a walk-in wardrobe, an armchair, and a big desk to spread out your maps or write your holiday diaries. Own bathroom en suite. Lots of books and pictures everywhere. There is a big country kitchen with a scrubbed pine table, where we have breakfast. Fantastic view of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick from the top of the garden! Westport is a vibrant and exceptionally pretty town, with lots to see and do, a lively arts and crafts scene, good traditional music, good food, and stunning coastal scenery all around. Achill, Connemara, Killary Harbour, Aasleagh Falls and Kylemore Abbey are all within an hour's drive. There are many lovely walks on the doorstep, and the Greenway cycle route, as well as the Westport Cycle Hub on small, quiet by-roads, pass close by to the house. A friendly Red Setter lives here, but has no access to the guest room!
For a single/small double room (also en-suite), see my other listing.

Guests are welcome to relax in the sitting room, with a squashy sofa and armchairs, picture books to look through, a TV with Freeview channels (no Sky TV), and a warm and cosy Stovax fireplace, for any wet evenings.

Your hostess is a keen explorer of the local landscape and of all those small roads and tracks that beg to be investigated, and we're happy to advise on endless lovely places to visit, whether coast, beach, mountains, or the Mayo lakes. I'm a keen landscape photographer, and happy to share information on the many great locations roundabouts, whether to photograph, to paint and sketch, or just for gazing at!

What we really love about living here is -- just living here! Westport town is close, the sea is just down the road, and there's a whole hinterland of spectacular beaches, cliffs, lakes, ancient woodlands and mountains. It's a wonderful place for music, too, with great sessions in many pubs. The Sailing Club is at the end of the road, the Golf Club is nearby, and there's also a riding school, where you can go for a trek. The Great Western Greenway cycle route to Achill passes close to the house, and there is easy bike rental in Westport and Newport. In summer, the Westport Garden Trail gives you the chance to view some great local private gardens.

Nearest bus and train -- and shops and places to eat -- is in Westport (6km). . So a car is essential, or maybe you are dedicated cyclists (there's a lockable shed for bikes).

Breakfast is set out, so you can be free to help yourselves when you appear in the morning. A few different cereals, fruit juice, brown bread, cheese, eggs, home-made blackberry jelly or lemon curd, fresh fruit, yoghurt, tea and coffee. And porridge is always possible!

The house is non-smoking. A well-behaved dog is welcome. It's our home; I'd like you to feel at your ease here too, and to care for things as you would in your own house. It is 7km into Westport, so do note that you need a car, or be keen and weather-resistant cyclists. It is a peaceful house, so, if you are late-night party animals, the location will not suit you - but if you are into the great outdoors, and Nature, then it is a really lovely place to come home to!

I'm a retired college lecturer - I moved to Westport a couple of years ago, to live in the stunning scenery and landscapes of the western seaboard. I love the great outdoors - walking, exploring small corners, looking at plants and rocks and that kind of thing!I used to be a very keen hill-walker, active every weekend with my local club.

In more recent years, I've been developing a passion for landscape photography (hence the urge to move to the west of Ireland). I have hosted visiting photographers, friends of friends, by word of mouth, and guided them to some of the wonderful locations I know. I hope to develop this a bit, and to write myself an airbnb listing, for folk who'd like some tips on special locations, and perhaps a bit of tuition. I'm told I am really good at helping people to see! I've also hosted a few folk (again, by word of mouth) who've been working on book projects, and needed a quiet bolthole, and the big desk in my guest room. My house is definitely a quiet bolthole! The experience has helped me to identify what makes a good guest - simple stuff like: take things as you find them, and do not innovate in the household without consulting your host!!!!

I'm also very interested in literature, classical music, movies, baking and cooking. I love dogs and cats, and have a young re-homed Red Setter, and a venerable tabby cat. I think I am fairly good at following the order of other people's houses, and taking things as I find them. There are some really interesting houses and lifestyles listed on airbnb, and I hope to get to visit a number of them on my travels....
