Rodon is an absolute dream! It's a complex of apartments of various sizes with everything you need - comfortable beds, nice hot showers, a fully equipped kitchen, sunny balconies and a strong wifi signal (if you plan to do work on said balcony like I did!). It's in a beautiful village directly on the water with restaurants along a white sandy beach. If you walk in either direction along the beach you will come across stunning views and very accessible old roads that you can hike along. I jogged along these roads each day and was blown away by the beauty. Bigger towns and mount Athos are just 10-20 mins drive away along equally beautiful terrain. There are lots of restaurants and shopping to be done there. I travelled there to work in cafes whenever it was rainy.
But the most important part is the couple who runs the property and their son who runs the Airbnb account. They are the most attentive, thoughtful and kind hosts I have ever had. I don't speak Greek, but we managed to communicate quite easily and Synodios is always a text away if something is unclear. He communicates with his parents regularly. For example, they checked in to make sure my heat and hot water were working. Since I was there very early in the season, they weren't quite working yet, so they fixed them quickly and made sure I was comfortable. They also treated me to homemade treats on a regular basis, which I thoroughly enjoyed. As someone travelling alone for a long period of time, it was lovely to find such a friendly environment. The neighbourhood also feels extremely safe and welcoming. Children play on the streets, grandmothers walk from house to house and it generally feels like a strong, friendly community.
The grocery store is within view of the apartment and the shopkeepers speak English and are very helpful with anything you need. They stock basic groceries and fresh produce, including feta and olives so you can make a delicious meal as soon as you arrive.
Finally, Synodios was very helpful when I needed a package delivered and couldn't have it sent directly to Nea Roda. He allowed me to ship it to his house in Thessaoloniki, which was very much appreciated.
I look forward to staying at Rodon many more times in the future and would recommend this to any of my friends who want to stay in an authentic Greek village.
