The castle has been built by Jan van Arckel, a knight from Gorcum (now Gorinchem), back at the beginning of the 14th century. Legend sais that Jan, during the crusades he participated in, received a vision about building a new castle for his eldest son after his return to Holland at the place where he would see a swan couple land. And this happened close to the river Linge and the city of Heukelum...
However, the fortification has been destroyed in 1672 by the French as they got frustrated not to be able to invade Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Utrecht due to the water frontier the Dutch created as a method of defense. During this "Terrible Year" the French destroyed every castle in the Low Lands they could get hold of. Fortunately the strong defense tower, the "Donjon", survived as the gun powder used was not strong enough. At the beginning of the 18th Century, Simon van der Stel, the second gouvernor of South Africa and founder of the famous Stellenbosch region, bought the deteriorated estate to create a Dutch pied à terre in Amsterdam style. On the Donjon he added a slate roof with clock and at the top he placed a phoenix. At the front square he created two mirrored buildings as a "Bauhaus".
You will have the whole apartment at your disposal, you will feel at home and don't need to share anything with others.
