I stayed with Bernardo during the Olympics because of its proximity to the main transport systems i.e. trains to Deodoro, Maracana and Olympic Stadium and BRT to Barra Olympic Park and Galeao Airport. Most tourists stay in Copacabana or Ipanema but Madureira was perfect for the Olympics as I saved lots of travelling time. The house is 5 minutes walk from Campinho BRT station and 10 minutes from Madureira train station and both are quick, safe and have frequent services. Bernardo’s place was perfect and was actually much better than the description and photos. The bedroom was clean with lots of wardrobe space and its own ensuite bathroom. It has a fan and airconditioner although we didn’t need them in August. There is satellite TV in the living room and a laptop with internet access which we were free to use. The kitchen and dining room are outside in a covered area with lots of plants and this is a great place to unwind after a tiring day and also where you have breakfast. The best thing about our stay though was Bernardo, his mother and girlfriend Tais who are now our extended family in Brazil! Nothing was too much trouble for them and they really went out of their way to make our stay exceptional. I wasn’t expecting breakfast, especially as the price was so cheap, but we got a fantastic breakfast every day and Bernardo’s mother was always there to chat and spoil us. Not many people speak English in Brazil but Bernardo’s English is excellent so when he is around you won’t have any problems communicating. He fetched us from Campinho BRT station on our arrival and gave us lots of good advice on what to do and where to go. He even bought us a SIM card and kept in touch with us by SMS throughout our stay. Madureira as a location is actually great for seeing how real Brazilians live. On my first trip to Rio I stayed in Copacapana and didn’t see much beyond the usual tourist fare. Madureira is a lively place with bars and restaurants everywhere and we felt completely safe walking around even after midnight when people are still out and about partying or chilling. There is a fantastic shopping area and one of the oldest markets in Rio but for me the best thing is that it is home to two of Rio’s best Samba schools, Imperio Serrano and Portela which has won the most Carnival titles of all. We visited both and were made very welcome and I even received impromptu samba lessons at Portela. I would recommend Bernardo’s for anyone wanting to see the ‘real’ Rio and it is easy to travel to Central, Lapa, Santa Teresa and places like Feira Nordestina from there. It is also simple to get to Copacabana and Ipanema using the Metro from the Maracana train station. I will definitely stay there if I visit Rio again.
