We live in a country house in our own private woodland, a quiet location in the heart of the Lake District National Park just 1.5 Km from the centres of twin villages Windermere and Bowness. Great views from the garden, lovely walks from the door.

Le logement

Our Guest Room reflects the Arts and Crafts style of the house, with oak floors and sheepskin rugs, yet has under-floor heating and a thoroughly modern shower-room. Windows look out onto part of our large garden and onto the fellside, usually grazed by sheep or cattle. Beyond, you can glimpse the famous Langdale Pikes.

Accès des voyageurs

You'll have the use of a private en-suite bedroom, fitted with a comfortable standard-size double-bed. Direct access is via a separate entrance. Private parking just 10 metres from the room. We usually serve breakfast at the oak dining table in the library. Free WiFi. Guests are welcome to explore our extensive grounds, half of which is natural mixed woodland with pathways and secluded clearings.

Échanges avec les voyageurs

We are widely travelled and enjoy exchanging travellers' tales. We are walkers (Everest Base Camp, Tour of Mont Blanc, etc.) and skiers. Adrian is a local guide and a qualified Mountain Leader, so we are well-equipped to suggest walks or drives in the Lake District. We have a good selection of maps and guide-books and can also recommend our favourite Lakeland pubs and restaurants.

Autres remarques

Windermere and Bowness villages offer a wide choice of pubs, cafes and restaurants, the nearest pub being the excellent Brookside, just 1 Km away. Although located in north-west England, Windermere is exactly half-way (by road) from both Land's End and John O'Groats, each about 700 Km.
Windermere is served by direct trains from Manchester Airport (2 hours) and is just 20 minutes drive from M6 Junction 36. The cities of Liverpool and Manchester are less than 2 hours drive, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Cairnryan (for ferries to Northern Ireland) are about 3 hours. Windermere is a transport hub, providing bus links throughout the Lake District National Park and beyond and there are ferry services up and down the lake. GPS users should input our PostCode only - LA23 2NQ, (not Lickbarrow Road) - most systems will direct you to our gateway. Please note that our minimum stay is usually two nights, as it just isn't possible to do justice to this beautiful area in a shorter stay. Although we are relatively new to Air B&B, we have been providing accommodation for many years - please see our Trip Advisor reviews.

We simply ask that guests respect the fact that Lickbarrow Lodge is our family home, not an hotel nor a guest-house. We have only one Bed and Breakfast room and we don't have staff other than ourselves so we cannot always be available after mid-morning. Your room is supplied with an electric kettle, tea and coffee but please note that, as in most countries, Bed and Breakfast rooms do not provide any facilities for preparing your own meals. For obvious reasons, take-away meals may not be consumed in your room, though we can often make our dining-room available to you. Of course, we are a non-smoking household. Tariff varies according to season - please see calendar. Price is for the room (not per person!). Minimum stay is normally 2 nights, though sometimes 3 nights.

Hosts Elizabeth and Adrian were both attentive and extremely welcoming. We loved our stay in Lickbarrow Lodge and would highly recommend others stay. Breakfast was of champions and service was second to none. Look forward to a return visit sometime.

Our stay at Lickbarrow Lodge was really good. The house is beautiful, the shower is incredible (2 shower heads and 6 jets!), the room where you are given breakfast is really pretty (and the breakfast was really generous and well cooked). The room was spacious and clean, and the hosts provided us with maps and tours for us to go on (they give tours to other parties so they know a lot about the area). Very friendly and you have your own space in the house as well which is great. Definitely five stars!

We had 2 wonderful nights with Elizabeth & Adrian in there lovely home in the hills of Windermere. They catered to our every need - we couldn't have asked for more. Adrian's advice on where we should go provided us with a good overview of seeing the area. Fantastic and much appreciated.

We arrived at Licbarrow Lodge at 4pm after a four-hour drive across England from York. Elizabeth and Adrian’s Airbnb is located on a high hill outside of Bowness/Windermere about 6 min by car from the centre of town. Thanks to Adrian’s detailed instructions emailed to us the night before and the aid of our GPS we had no trouble finding the Lodge. It was very nice to be greeted by two friendly people. We had no sooner arrived and Elizabeth had served us tea and scones. We were ‘blown away’ by the Lodge’s beautiful location. It’s hard to put into words the beauty and sense of peace you experience. You will need to go and experience it for yourself. Our room was just lovely in a very lovely house with a great history. The en-suite bathroom was fully equipped and the oak door made by traditional craftsmen was very interesting. Breakfast, which was served in a lovely room full of history and memorabilia, was all that you could ask for. After finishing Elizabeth’s breakfast you really didn’t need to eat for the rest of the day. When you stay at Licbarrow Lodge not only do you get a lovely room, but you get to stay with people who love and know the Lakes district. Adrian is able to provide you with all sorts of information concerning what to see. If it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t have seen the best parts of this beautiful part of England. In summary, we highly recommend Lickbarrow Lodge, but if you want to rage in the town’s pubs this may not be for you. But if you want a beautiful location to spend a few days and enjoy this great part of England with great hosts go no further than Lickbarrow. Sue and Steve Cordell Perth, Australia

Peter and I enjoyed our 3 day stay with Liz and Adrian who were lovely people, thoughtful and accomodating. Beautiful character house and ground floor room in a quiet setting, car parking and lovely breakfasts. Adrian gave us advice on walks and drives which we took, climbed Old Man Coniston-brillant views. The walk into town is lovely via Dales Way and takes about 40 mins, you can taxi back if it's evening (which we did) for a reasonable £5-7. We would definately stay again.

We really had an unforgettable time with Elizabeth and her family. First of all, the location is great, easy to walk to Windermere city center and Bowness town. The foot path is worth to walk. The room is wonderful with a comfortable bed and a spacious bathroom. Everything just perfect!!! In the morning, we had delicious conventional English breakfast, it was fabulous! Elizabeth and Adrian were very friendly and gave us a lot of helpful advices. As well as their son Roy, he even sent us to train station on his way to work. This is the best B&B experience for us!

I could sum my time with Elizabeth and Adrian in a single line - "just the perfect hosts you want - personable, resourceful and very warm". They went the extra mile to make our stay a memorable one. They are so lovely, we invited them to join us for breakfast to which they kindly accepted - and what lovely conversations and laughter we shared over breakfast?! They both enjoy the outdoors so can give very helpful tips on how to make the most of the Lake District. The lodge is a short taxi drive from Windermere train station (5-8mins) and a pleasant 25mins walk along the Dales Way to Bowness-on-Windermere (I will highly recommend this walk if you want to visit Bowness). Our room and bathroom was beautiful, warm, comfortable, spacious and tidy. Shame I can't share photos here. In all, I know just the place to stay when I next visit the Lakes.

Elizabeth and Adrian are a well-travelled married couple who enjoy living in this beautiful place but appreciate that these are many more places around the world still to explore!
