We met our host, Maria, who is so friendly and helpful! We had some difficulty finding transportation from Budapest to Sighet and I called her the day before I was due to check in at Somewhere Different Transylvania. She kindly assisted to call the transport company who could not speak English when I called them on their business number. We were able to get the transport, thanks to her helping us to call the company and reserve seats for us!
She was also very kind to meet us at Sighet to drive us to the village, Breb. We were supposed to be due by 4pm, but our bus only reached at 7pm! She had waited for us all this time and when she appeared, she greeted us with a big smile.
The house that we stayed in is remarkable. It has been done up Maramures style (now we have travelled so far to experience the unique traditional culture so of course we relished this detail). There is a neat fireplace that you have to keep stoking and chopped firewood are all neatly piled in one corner. Although Maria or our village neighbour would help us start the fire, my husband seems absolutely fascinated with starting the fireplace every morning and evening.
I was pleasantly surprised by the well stocked kitchen. I found eggs, fresh pepper, cucumber, tomatoes, a loaf of bread, spaghetti, fuit juices and milk in the fridge. There was even a fruit bowl with grapes grown from Maria's vine! It was absolutely delightful as there were days when it's cold and I was able to prepare a warm meal at home; I almost felt like I was one of the villager.
My village neighbour was so kind, upon request, she handed me a mug of hot steaming milk fresh from her cow's udder on my second morning. What a refreshing break from the city!
With such a beautiful cosy little cottage and such hospitable people at Breb, how could you not feel nourished to the soul? And not to mention waking up to the blue sky and falling asleep under a blanket of stars (there's a really nice window right above where we sleep).
All in all, a wonderful experience. Would definitely want to stay there again. And do ask Maria for her recommendation for authentic Maramures fare in Sighet - her recommendations always leave us smacking our lips and wanting more!
