Échanges avec les voyageurs

We are a tropical permaculture farm and retreat center, so there will be various people (staff, interns, outside community members visiting for permaculture, yoga or hula classes) on property. Though, due to the large amount of land that we have, you can be as private or social as you'd like.

Le quartier

We are located on a 44-acre tropical farm sanctuary on ancient Hawaiian lands in the Puna District, one of the last undeveloped magical coastal regions on the Big Island of Hawaii. The farm is on the windward side, 20 miles Southeast of Hilo - a culturally diverse university town - and less than 1 mile from Pahoa (easy to bike or walk) - a historic town with excellent restaurants, grocery and health food stores, post office and library. Our guests love how close we are to town and how it can feel like we are worlds away from the modern world, yet a gourmet dinner in town can be quick and easy.

This district is known across the globe for its cultural richness and uniqueness. We are mere miles away from an active volcano, of which you can go on lava hikes to see real flowing lava when the flow is good. We are a short distance to warm tidal pools, waterfalls, clothing-optional black sand beaches, natural steam vent saunas from the nearby active volcano, surfing, swimming with dolphins, and lots of sweet community events– farmer's markets, ecstatic dances and culture.

There is some public transit, but it is not the most convenient. Your best bet is to rent a car. Hitchhiking is very easy around here for those that are experienced and comfortable with the adventures that hitchhiking brings. We are walking distance to Pahoa town, and just a half hour by car from Hilo airport (ITO).

The Hawaiian Sanctuary is a very unique permaculture farm in the jungle. The staff were very friendly and the accommodations well kept. We loved the Permaculture class held on Thursday, Yoga classes and access to the gym. There was hardly anyone staying there when we were there so we had the outdoor living area to ourselves at night and loved it. The frogs and sounds of the jungle were awesome. We were pretty cold at night, however so I'd ask for an extra blanket if you're staying in the Winter.

My second visit to Hawaiian Sanctuary! I love living on a permaculture farm and being able to walk the beautiful and spacious and serene grounds and eat food grown in the garden and pick fruits from the groves. What keeps me coming back is the wonderful selection of classes and offerings--yoga in the morning, drop-in classes on permaculture and even farm-to-bar chocolates and local lecturers on Hawaiin culture and amazing drumming classes and film nights. What an warm and welcoming community of locals and interns--having locals share tips and advice of the surrounding area was super helpful. I love this place!

A huge yoga studio and equally large workout room surrounded by all kinds of plants and banana trees. Walking among the buildings are family of peacocks and couple of friendly cats. If you're coffee drinking, head into nearby Pahoa for your morning coffee and great organic breakfast. In addition to Pahoa, you're short drive to black sand beaches, Volcano NP, and waterfront town of Hilo.

This place was a true sanctuary!! Everything was so chill!! I loved doing yoga in the mornings and having smoothies and yummy lunches! The hot tub sauna was so nice and put me right to bed! The land is so beautiful and is close to the town so even tho you feel far off in the jungle you are not isolated. I had the best ever colonic with Tera Ann! She is so sweet and present! I enjoyed my time and would come back for more!

I felt like I was staying with friends and Family. The retreat was absolutely beautiful. My room was very clean and modern. The hot tub and sauna that looks out into the jungle was so relaxing. My meals that were prepared for me was wonderful and so healthy. There was so many different delicious fruits and vegetables that I have never had in my life. I gained a better understanding of what peri culture is. I also took my first Yoga class. The instructors are great. My vacation would not have been so great and I would have not got to see so many different parts of the island without the wonderful staff at Hawaiian Sanctuary
