Le logement

Inverbroom is a 6 bedroom detached Victorian villa with a magnificent sea view and large walled garden. On the edge of Port Bannatyne on the Isle of Bute, it has recently been completely renovated to a very high standard and is a perfect family holiday home. It sleeps 12 people (more if there are small children). There are three floors, with the main entrance being in the middle floor. From the front door you can see along the generous hall out through the window that runs the full drop of the stairs, out over the sea to the Cowal hills. The house has been decorated throughout to the highest standards and is furnished with a lovely selection of antique and 20th century modern furniture.
There is large main living room on the middle floor, with extraordinary seaviews. It is a lovely place to sit and read or watch the weather or the birdlife. We deliberately have no TV in this room. The middle floor has the master bedroom, also with a seaview, and another bedroom, looking up to the woods. There is a large bathroom with a walk-in monsoon shower and a claw foot bath.
Downstairs you can access the garden directly from the central hallway. This floor has the huge kitchen/dining room, which runs the length of the house, with a dining table that will seat 12. The kitchen has extensive work surfaces and is generously stocked with kitchen equipment (we like to cook) including a magimix, coffee makers, breadmaker, juicer and good knives. There is a gas hob and a wonderful wood burning oven which acts like an Aga, heating the room as well as baking bread and cakes wonderfully. This floor also has a morning room, with a 3 seater sofa, a chaise longue, easy chairs, a wood burning stove and a TV. There are lovely views over the sea and the garden. Finally, there is the 'den', a cosy room with wooden floors and squishy seats, dedicated to the younger family members or the TV/gamers. This room has TV, with Freeview and BT Vision, DVD player and a wireless point and is set up to be great for movie watching and gaming. There are a selection of DVDs, books and games and there is also WiFi throughout the house.
The upper floor is given over to four bedrooms and a second bathroom, with bath with shower over, toilet, bidet and sink. The four bedrooms are roughly identical in size, two with seaviews and two with views of the wood. Two have double beds and two have twin beds. The generous landing has a comfy chair and a small TV with a DVD player.
The house is fully gas central heated, and has two boilers so there is always hot water and heat if needed. Four of the rooms have open fires, and one has a wood burning stove. There is a plentiful supply of wood. There is on-street parking, and space for a car to the rear of the property, accessed through double gates via a side road.
The garden is mostly given over to lawn - with room for kids to play football! We have a thriving fruit bed with raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, blackberries and gooseberries. There are 6 large apple trees and a newly planted orchard of damsons, plums and greengages. Any summer or Autumn visit is likely to offer something nice for pudding. We have a dog ourselves, so dogs are more than welcome and the walled garden is secure for kids and canines.
We have recently renovated the garden cottage, which is available for rental in addition to the house (not available separately). It sleeps two in a double bed (with room for a cot if necessary). There is a main room with bed, woodburning stove, and sofa, a small fully equipped kitchen with its own woodburning stove, and a bathroom with shower, toilet and sink
The Isle of Bute is a lovely safe place for a holiday. You can walk along the beach by stepping out through the gate at the bottom of the garden. The walk into Port Bannatyne takes 10 minutes and takes you to a great post office/cafe, two very friendly pubs and a restaurant as well as the expanding marina. Our kids love the short cycle ride to the 'rec' - a playing field with swings and slides, football pitch and a petanque court. Bute has glorious beaches, hills and forests to explore, a proper town - Rothesay - with butchers, bakers, fishmongers and supermarkets and cinema and a grand house - Mountstuart - probably the finest stately home in Scotland: where Stella McCartney got married!

I loved this house! We stayed for the weekend with friends and family and everyone raved about it. The location is beautiful with spectacular views, the house is well equipped, comfortable and very stylish. I loved the decor and the atmosphere. No one wanted to leave and we can't wait to go back! We had cars with us and only a very short drive to main shops. There is a small shop within walking distance also. Communication was excellent. Thanks!

The house was perfect for 11 of us plus dogs over Christmas period. Lovely house on three levels with plenty of space. I personally enjoyed the 'quiet lounge' taking in the sea views with a good book! Lots of open fires throughout the house which we enjoyed. The location was perfect for exploring Bute. Nick was extremely helpful with the booking, in the run up to the stay supporting me with recommendations to ensure I could order Christmas 'essentials' and was quick to respond on the few times I contacted him during the stay. Bute is lovely and this was our first visit so definitely hope to return in the future. The house + Bute = an amazing family christmas!

Thanks so much for this review! The comment about cleanliness in the kitchen was due to some mould on wooden utensils in a drawer. This was caused by the winter atmosphere and has now been remedied

We had a fantastic 3 nights at Inverbroom. The house is beautiful and we were made to feel really welcome by Nick and Maria. Beautifully decorated, super comfy beds, and lots of living space (we had 7 kids in our party and there was so much room for everyone!). The house is almost straight onto the sea and the road is really quiet - we saw porpoises from the bottom of the garden! It was a short walk to the local pub which served good food. We will definitely be back and I would not hesitate to recommend this gorgeous house.

Beautiful house, well equipped, as described and beautiful sea views. Plenty of space for all 11/12 of us. Warm and comfortable. Garden was great for the children. Would certainly consider for future family get togethers.

A fantastic stay at Inverbroom. Beautiful Bute and house.....even more stunning than the photos. Our stay was brilliant. Communication was prompt and easy, and the guide to Inverbroom was super informative and helped us plan our days out. It was exactly as shown in the review and more - couldn't have been better.

We rented Nick's home as a friend's holiday for twelve of us. It was such a wonderful three days - the house is very well equipped and we especially enjoyed the gate at the end of the garden that led straight onto the coast. Nick provided a bunch of information about local walks and places to eat, many of which we tried and loved. We spent most of the two days we were there on hikes, one as part of the West Highland Way (an easy and accessible walk) and the other we just improvised (much more demanding). There are definitely activities to cater to everyone, and the house is equally as lovely to spend time in. I think all of us were sad to say goodbye, and will be back to Bute in the future! Thanks Nick!

I'm a museum director in Manchester and fell in love with Bute about six years ago when my wife Maria and I began exploring the Scottish islands. We bought the house 5 years ago and spent a couple of years restoring it.

We stay in it regularly with our kids (and dog) and have now got involved with the restoration of the Rothesay Pavilion.

We love the house and didn't want it standing empty for too long so we've recently joined AirBnB to share it with other people
