Welcome to my earth bag home located 25 minutes outside of the entrance to Big Bend National Park. The house sits on 70 acres with 360 degree views of mountains, mesas, pinnacles, spires, and buttes. A truly unique way to experience the area.

It is not uncommon to see multiple storms raging at once while the sun is setting, lightning striking, moon beaming, stars shooting, and rainbows arching all in unison. The views stretch to an estimated 40-50 miles wide while boasting an ever changing kaleidoscopic sky that will come back to you in your dreams time and time again.

You will have the entire house to yourselves.
I am a part of an association which allows my guests to access the public pool 13 miles away for $5 per car load. It is clean, in a beautiful setting, and not crowded the times I've been.

Autres remarques

This is a self check in and check out rental. You will be required to bring your own linens, blankets/sleeping bags, towels, fire wood, and drinking water. I have a kettle and French press but you must bring your own coffee and tea There is no flush toilet. This is a compost toilet that you spread peat moss over your business. I will provide peat moss and toilet paper. You will be required to empty and replace compost bucket in the designated area when you check out. It really isn't that bad of a process. Also, I do have an air conditioner but you can only put on between the hours of 11am-5pm at peak sunlight and only if it is not a cloudy day. You can NEVER use the AC at night!! This home runs entirely on solar energy so please do not use household appliances (hair dryers, blenders, irons, etc.). I catch all of my water from rain storms in cisterns so your showers and dishwashing will need to be gone about very methodically to conserve water. I will provide biodegradable soaps and request you to only use soaps of this nature. All of my water runs into an area that will eventually feed a garden. Please don't poison my soil with non-biodegradable soaps. This is a dry desert and water is very precious so please be mindful of your consumption. When you check out I require you to leave the house how it was left for you so other guests can enjoy a neat environment. This may include sweeping floors, washing dishes and putting them away, cleaning counters, table top, stove top, and refrigerator. I also require you to take all of your trash and recycling with you when you leave. If any of these things do not appeal to you I insist that you book a hotel/motel. Please respect my off grid home and be open to a more sustainable alternative to traditional lodging. Thank you.

I have a very intimate relationship with my land and everything surrounding it. I built every bit of this house with my own hands and only want to share it with those who have a keen respect for hard work and the preservation of nature. Please be gentle with my home and the surrounding flora and fauna. No hunting is permitted on my property. Also, no shooting of guns will be accepted on my property.

We arrived and were amazed by the spot, the landscape, the deco of the house. It's a dreamed no man's land. We ate outside and stayed speechless in front of the sunset. But, as soon as the sun set, we had a power outrage since the reservoir was empty (solar electricity)... We therefore had no electricity from 8pm till the next day 8 am (no light, no fridge, no communication possible). The place is worth it but dont be scared of the reptiles out and sometimes in the house :). However, Jamie helped us out as much as he could to find a solution. Last word: if you like adventure, go for it, it's awesome.

This little house is so charming and peaceful. I’m sorry we couldn’t have stayed longer. A beautiful place to kickback and relax away from the noise of the world. Great artistic touches by Jamie and a well managed off the grid home.a gorgeous area for hiking and watching the sun and moon. I Highly recommend this place.

Perfect spot to get off the grid and enjoy the peace and quiet. One of a kind home when it comes to design and art. Jamie was a pleasure - greeted us upon arrival and walked us through the home. Be prepared to be responsible with your waste! Jamie really has his system down - awesome host.

Thank you so much for having us Jamie. We really enjoyed staying at your place. Such a unique experience! Watching the sun set and rise over the mountains and stargazing were some of our favourite parts of our stay. Also loved seeing all the unique finds he had built into his creative home. We will be back!

I am generally around the Big Bend area for 6 months at a time and am happy to meet with guests and answer questions about the area. I am typically away for the summer but know many people who will keep an eye on my place. I'd be happy to answer questions through email or phone when I'm out of the area. Other than that I will leave details about the functions of the household on note cards throughout the house. It is rather straight forward.
