Find your perfect Adirondack getaway at Camp Hatteras. Located on 33 acres of private forest, this beautiful chalet sits in the middle of a pristine pine woodland. Enjoy miles of trails that include access to a lean-to atop a sledding hill, cliffs, and wetlands that are great for birding or stargazing. In the winter, the wood stove casts a cheery glow over the living room and kitchen, while summer guests enjoy meals on the deck or screened porch.

Le logement

Private and secluded, yet centrally located, Camp Hatteras is located seven miles north of Paul Smiths College on Rt. 30. You’ll be in one of the most varied wilderness areas of the park. We’re located in the middle of some of the Adirondack’s most dependable snow for cross-country skiing, with abundant groomed and back country trails nearby.

The Adirondack Park Visitors Interpretive Center is five miles away and is open year round with wonderful hiking, XC skiing, snowshoe trails and educational programs for the whole family.

You’ll be 25 minutes to Titus Mountain Ski Center, Saranac Lake or Malone; 35 minutes to Lake Placid and its Olympic venues; 50 minutes to Whiteface Mountain. The Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks (the Wild Center) is 40 minutes away in Tupper Lake.

Camp Hatteras has three bedrooms and sleeps up to 8 people. Two of the bedrooms have two twin beds each and a third bedroom has a queen. An open loft has a futon, which can be folded open for another person or two. Two bathrooms with showers make sure that no one is waiting. There is a complete laundry room for those making longer stays. There are toys for younger children to discover, and a high chair and “potty” for toddlers.

A wrap-around deck has a propane grill and picnic table in a screened porch. Bring some water jugs with you, as this 500’ deep well delivers the freshest, tastiest mountain water that you could ever want. You’ll want to take some home. There is a nice campfire spot for summer/winter time marshmallow roasts or quiet fire gazing. The glass front wood stove sheds a warming glow across the great-room’s hardwood floors in the winter.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a microwave, electric oven and range, a dishwasher, and all of the things that make cooking healthy, hearty meals possible.

Firewood is supplied for our winter guest’s heating comfort, and a reasonable amount of campfire wood is available in the summer as well. The driveway travels about 200 yards in from the main road and is well plowed with plenty of parking. If you’d rather not heat with a wood stove, the electric baseboard heat is always there to keep you warm.

In the warmer months, there are nearby trails which are excellent for mountain biking with both back country roads and single-track. Designated horseback riding trail heads are less than a mile away. A “Wild and Scenic Study River,” the Osgood, flows nearby with put-in and take-outs within a couple of miles of your driveway. Drop-off and pick-up arrangements can be made. This is a “must paddle” for those interested in wildlife and scenery. Many have spotted the Bald Eagle who has a nest at the river’s edge. We are surrounded by many great fishing spots.

Your hosts, Bob and Sheila, are a former professional wilderness guide, and a life-long resident of the Paul Smith’s area. Between the two of them, good advice—connecting you to great experiences and unique destinations is as close to a “sure thing” as you can get. The temporary use of their brains is complimentary!

We loved exploring the property, there are many tidy trails to wander. Toads and frogs were daily finds along the trail. The area offers lots to do, all within an hours drive. The W!Id Center is great for younger ones and you are in the right area for hiking, canoeing or visiting Saranac Lake ( great carousel for kids there) and Lake Placid. Both towns have lots of good restaurants. We recommend Blue Moon in Saranac Lake! We did face mosquitoes, but it was always manageable. The well water in the house is amazing to drink! My only nitpicks were the water pressure in the showers. The downstairs one was the better of the two and my other nitpick was the road noise from traffic, but the road is probably well over 150 ft from the house, so there is a buffer. The property totally outweighs theses small minuses. Firepits, a lean-to and a tree house are among the many wooded locales you can explore. Gentle well marked trails, just outside your door! We loved our stay! Oh and be sure to visit Donnellys Ice Cream! Yum!

We had an outstanding stay at Camp Hatteras. The house and property are beautiful. We enjoyed walking and mountain biking on the trails Sheila and Bob maintain and visiting the shelter on the property. The house is close to so many outdoor opportunities. We paddled, fished and hiked all within a few miles of Camp Hatteras. The house had everything we needed. It was a wonderful place to enjoy time with family- we especially enjoyed hanging out at the fire pit. The house was meticulously clean and welcoming. Sheila was a fantastic host. Accessible, friendly and knowledgable. I would highly recommend staying at her place if you are looking for a quiet spot in the woods to have an Adirondack adventure.

Camp Hatteras is a wonderful place to get into the woods, be with nature and get away from stress. We chose it because of it's proximity to the Adirondack Visitor Interpretive Center's x-c ski trails. We joined our adult kids for a weekend of skiing and snowshoeing . It is convenient to snow shoe up Azure or St. Regis mtns. or many other mountains, for that matter, and great to snow shoe, ski and sled around the property itself. The home is cozy and offers everything you need away from home. We imported some games and food and we could have been happy there for a very long time. In summer, it would get you into the mountains for great hikes and canoeing and peace in this beautiful spot.

We had an amazing family weekend at Camp Hatteras! If you want to be surrounded by the majesty of the mountains and the quiet of the snow this is the place for you! Sheila goes out of her way to make your experience awesome and be sure to go snow shoeing and sledding! There was easily enough room for 7-8 people to cook and hangout playing cards, games and reading, talking, and cooking together! Great for family get togethers! Can't wait to visit again!!!

Best Christmas ever! We visited Sheila's place for Christmas 2016 and truly enjoyed our stay. Sheila went out of her way to accommodate us and make us feel at home. She is amazing! The house is clean and very spacious. We had a group of 8 and all slept very comfortably. The kitchen is fully equipped so we were able to make a large Christmas dinner with no problems. The fireplace makes the house feel very cozy. The property is beautiful. It was great to have so many fun things to do right by the house. We loved exploring the area. We also had a great time sledding! Make sure you bring warm clothes and your snow boots in the winter so you can enjoy the trails. All in all, it was a great experience and a trip we will never forget. Thank you Sheila!!

Bob, Hannah, Luke & Sheila enjoy traveling, but they love the Adirondacks and can't imagine living anywhere else. This property was built by family & friends for Bob's parents and is now rented out as it truly is a gift to be shared.

This place is more than a vacation rental to us, it is part of the family. At Camp Hatteras you'll notice that it feels like home and is well taken care of, as you will be as our guests during your stay...
