A 2 persons room (separate beds) in an authentic house in the historical center of Risan, Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. Easy and laid back place with restaurants, bars and terraces at the water side, surrounded by interesting sites and beautiful nature.
A 2 person-room (separate beds) in an authentic house in Risan, in the famous Bay of Kotor, a Unesco World Heritage site. The house is situated in the historical center of Risan (the house with the blue windows on the picture). It has 3 floors and a roof terrace. On the ground floor there is kitchen/dining room, shower and toilet. The room with two single beds is on the first floor. The roof terrace is on the third floor, with views over the mountains, the village and the sea. This is a family home and Mara, the friendly lady owner of 70 years, lives in the house (on the second floor). She speaks no foreign languages, but her daughter is fluent in Dutch and English, and all correspondence goes via her.
The rooms and the house are simply but very tastefully decorated. The price is per room (for two persons).
The atmosphere in Risan is casual and pleasant. It's a small town, with an authentic atmosphere. The house is located in the old part in a narrow car-free street dating from the Roman period, which runs from the central square up the hill. On the central square (1 min walk) is a local market every Sunday where peasants sell their products: olives, cheese, ham, fruit and vegetables. There are also two cafes with terrace, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee, good Montenegrin wines and rakija, but also can taste local food. There are few restaurants, cafes and some small shops and supermarkets in the city center. There are several small beaches (the closest is just 3 minutes walk from the house), however there are no sand beaches in the Bay of Kotor. Risan seems to breathe the past. Although there are summer visitors, you cannot call it a touristic place.
The Roman mosaics with Hypnos, the God of Sleep, found in a second century A.D are just across the park.
In the center of Risan is a tourist office and a rent a car. Free WI-FI in many cafes; the friendly owners from the cafe at the main square will provide you with the password.
The area is unique, with steep mountains and an enchanting view of the sea, in Italian-style villages, old churches, monasteries, hiking areas and natural parks, Roman ruins and mosaics etc. Kotor is the capital of the Bay and is about 18 km away from Risan. A bus service runs every 30 minutes between Risan and Kotor. Every small village in the Bay is different and has own atmosphere, and is worth visiting.

I am artist and filmmaker. I was born in former Yugoslavia, currently based in the Netherlands. My mother's house is a beautiful stone house, a cozy artist home. The surrounding nature is amazing, with its high mountains, islands and the sea, but the area is also characterized by its culture: old walled cities, Roman mosaics, beautiful churches and monasteries. I have been researching monastery life in this region and I organize different kinds of daily excursions on demand.
