This charming and light-filled house is tastefully furnished and has great views across Totnes to Windmill Hill. Though just yards from Totnes High Street, it's hidden away and very peaceful. The main living space has big glass windows and a balcony where you can sit out and enjoy the view. It also has its own private parking space (rare in central Totnes), gas central heating, 2 good sized double bedrooms and an extra double sofa bed available on the mezzanine floor.

Le logement

The highlight of the house is the high-ceilinged light-filled sitting room with its views of Windmill Hill. The main part of the house is on the first floor with a large open plan kitchen, dining area & sitting room. Also on this floor are the main bedroom (overlooking the courtyard), a recently fitted bathroom with a fabulous walk-in shower and another separate toilet.
From the first floor steps lead up to the mezzanine floor with a double futon, lots of light from two Velux windows (with blinds) and a desk. The house also has gas central heating, wifi and its own private off-street and covered parking space.
The second bedroom is on the ground floor (you have to go outside briefly to reach it) with a ziplink bed (1 double or twin beds) and is almost completely self-contained with its own toilet and separate shower room, TV and kettle. Perfect for a couple or for a bit of separation from a teenager or two!

Autres remarques

Two other flats share the entrance from the high street. They are not holiday lets so please bear that in mind.
This house is perfect for up to 4 people but can accommodate up to 6 using the futon bed on the mezzanine floor. The parking space is tight to get into so you will need to take care if you're in a large or particularly shiny car.

Ben's place worked really well for our family for a short break - we have three daughters in their teens/early twenties, and a dog - as we wanted to come and explore the wonderful quirky shops of Totnes and the nearby coast. The house is very individual, and the furnishings relaxed, both of which suited us fine. One daughter had the sofabed in the living-room, another the bed on the mezzanine above, and another the downstairs (musty) bedroom whilst we nabbed the upstairs bedroom. This was fine for us but may not work for more senior or demanding guests! The great thing, for us, was that the house completely matched the spirit of Totnes - and we loved that.

We fell in love with this property from the minute we walked through the door. Light, airy, spacious, quirky, comfortable, clean, and full of useful things to help the holiday along. We were a party of 5 (originally 6) adults and this was extremely comfortable for us. The main house is accessed by an external staircase from the garden and garage area and comprises the living area, kitchen, toilet, shower room and double bedroom. The wifi is great, no issues at all with speed or consistency. There is a ballustraded mezzanine floor with a comfortable double futon bed, hanging space for clothes, a chest of drawers, desk and lighting and looks down onto the living area. Because it was such a spacious room, we had no issues at all of privacy or noise. The kitchen is wonderfully resourced and full meals can easily be prepared. There is a dishwasher and the fridge-freezer is ample. There isn't a washing machine but there is a launderette nearby. The car park space is within the property in a garage which is a boon as parking space in Totnes can be quite scarce. The other double bedroom, with it's own shower and toilet, is on the ground floor immediately under the main house and is accessed from the garden area with it's own door and lock. It has a lovely cottage feel to it as opposed to the main loft style living above. I would imagine that if you have very young children this property might be a little difficult due to the steps and the layout and is therefore more suited to older children and adults. This house is just so Totnes...if you have never been to the town then this is a delightful introduction to it. It is a perfect base for exploring South Devon. We normally stay in Torbay, but this year opted for Totnes as it was closer to a wedding venue. We thought we knew Totnes well but we hadn't realised how easy it was getting about and how central it was. Torbay (Paignton,Torquay and Brixham) is easily reached in 20 minutes or so by car (public transport options are excellent too) and we were at our favourite beaches just as we were in the many previous years. The South Hams beaches were also far more accessible, the Moors were within an easy half hour drive and there are so many attractions around. I loved the fact that the town was on our doorstep (although the house is quiet as it's set just back from the High Street).. all the wonderful independent shops, markets and cafes are just a minute walk away. The town brims with character and there is something for all ages to enjoy. Our holiday was all the more special for staying here and we would thoroughly recommend this property.Thank you Jo and Heather for the thought you put into making this a perfect holiday home.

The Lofthouse is right in the middle of Totnes just off the main Street. A great location in a gorgeous town. The view from the kitchen / lounge was fantastic and the general feel of the place was very cosy and homey with enough space. A great location to explore the coast and Dartmoor and lovely that we could bring our dog along too. A really great place to stay.

Great location for visiting Totnes and surrounding area. House is generally lovely though the third room is actually separate from the rest and the stair to main building is very steep so not ideal for younger children. Perfect for a couple or small older family group. House was clean, everything provided generously. Only slight concern though was that the separate room did smell somewhat of damp. Would certainly, however, recommend in general.

Director of a holiday cottage agency called West Country Lets in Devon. We specialise in hand-picked cottages and apartments in the South Hams and Devon areas.
I moved out of London in summer 2010 to Devon. Married with two teenage sons and in my spare time into cycling (on and off road), trail running. skiing and the occasional triathlon.
In the past I worked as a journalist & magazine publisher but more recently have run my own companies: a dating company, a travel company and now my agency.
I'm happy with lots of styles of travelling. I have particularly fond memories of cycle camping around Europe. But a bit of luxury can be good too.
