Newly restored stone cottage perched on a hillside in the quiet and charming community of Areosa, just 5 minutes from downtown Viana do Castelo. The cottage has 2 levels containing a modern kitchen, family room & bathroom, 2 bdrms & ocean view.

We purchased this home because of its quiet solitude in the hills above Viana do Castelo. The home is very comfortably furnished and has wonderful views of the ocean and is in extremely close proximity to the wooded lands on the hillsides above the house. The house has 2 bedrooms, each with a queen size bed. The couch in the living room pulls out into a full size bed. So the house has a total of 2 beds + 1 sofa bed for one person.

Guests will have access to the entire home.

We will be available only via email during your stay. However we will leave the phone numbers and contact information for our leasing agents, who will be available to answer questions that you may have.

Areosa, our neighborhood at the edge of Viana do Castelo, used to be a separate village but is now incorporated into the town of Viana do Castelo. It still maintains the charm of a small village. It is situated on a hillside so it has beautiful views of the ocean below. Part of the national forest is located directly above the village on the hillsides, so guests are treated to wonderful woodland nature walks as they stroll just a kilometer from the house, up the winding road, into the wooded areas.

The primary, and only, language spoken by most of the neighbors is Portuguese. The neighbors are extremely friendly so please say "Bom Dia" (Good Day) or "Boa Tarde" (Good Afternoon) as you pass on by.

You will be within a 10 minute stroll down paths to the village center in which you'll find a church, school, cafe, and restaurant. Or, if you'd like to go into town, you will be exactly 2.7 Kilometers (about 2.2. miles) from the city center in which you'll find wonderful cafes, shops, restaurants and wonderful walks through charming, winding, narrow streets. About 2.0 kilometers from the house, as you stroll or drive into town, you'll find the Estacao Viana (Viana Station Shopping Center) which offers you a wonderful shopping experience and movie theaters (all movies are shown in their original format and language, then subtitled in Portuguese).

There are wonderful beaches within Viana do Castelo and even more within short driving distances, in nearby towns. You should also plan to visit Santuario Luzia Church (a beautiful church on the highest point above the city). It is just a short drive from the house.

Amazing day trips, each within 60 - 90 minutes from Viana do Castelo, include:
- Porto (home of Port wine and beautiful architecture)
- Braga (Medievel and Gothic Churches; castle and palace preserves)
- Soajo (a must-see, incredible village tucked within the eastern national forest on the border with Spain, filled with stone cottages, stone graineries, and winding paths)
- Caminha (a charming seaside town 20 minutes north of Viana do Castelo on the Minho River which borders Spain)
- Vigo, Spain (a large city in western Spain with a small charming historic center)

Getting to Viana do Castelo is rather easy.
By air/train: fly into Porto (about 1 hour away from Viana do Castelo) and either drive up A28 (the main highway going directly to Viana do Castelo) or take a train from Porto (a train will take you about 1 h 40 m; but will require a cab ride from the airport into Porto's main station). When renting cars do NOT rent a large car because of the narrow, cobblestone streets in which you'll be driving. Areosa (the neighborhood) streets are narrow and winding. This adds much charm to the area but can make it challenging for drivers who are not used to driving down narrow, cobblestone streets.

You may also want to take the train into Viana do Castelo (from Porto or Lisboa). Once in town you can rent a car for day-trips from one of several car rental and travel agencies which are located on the main street in town (a few meters walking distance from the train station).

The house is situated in a small area on the northwest side of the city. A car or motorbike is needed to get to and from the house. It is an easy walk into town (about 2.7 km or 2.2 miles) but not with luggage.

There are taxis available at the Viana do Castelo train station in the center of town.

There is currently no cable tv available at the house. Nor is there a washer/dryer. This is a quiet cottage meant for relaxation and retreats.
