The back yard Avocado Cottage is centrally located in the historic Shenandoah neighborhood of Miami, walking distance to Calle Ocho. The bedroom has a queen size bed + foldout. The porch is perfect for lazy brunches, or even to work on your laptop.

This backyard Avocado cottage was built in the late 1930's and we recently renovated. We named it after the avocado tree in the yard, and painted it an appropriate avocado-green color!
We have been working a lot on the landscaping and in the restoration of the main house (Mango House).
The cottage is freshly painted inside and out and most everything was redone. It has a main living area with a kitchenette, a bedroom, a bathroom and a covered porch. Please note the Avocado Cottage is not toddler proof.

*The bedroom: has a Queen size bed, two nightstands, a couch that folds
into a single bed and a relatively large closet. Let us know if you have a
3rd person and we will provide the mattress for the fold out couch. No
need to pack sheets and blankets, we provide those.
* The bathroom: As was typical in this era, the bathroom is small by
modern US standards, but has been just fully redone, in period style. It
has a shower, not a tub. We will provide towels, a hair dryer, shampoo/
body wash.
*The Kitchenette has everything you need to prepare simple meals:
microwave, hot plate, toaster oven, coffee maker, dishes and pots.
*The front porch: has a table with chairs, so you can enjoy outdoor dining any time! There is also an electrical outlet if you want to work on your laptop outdoors. A hammock is hanging in the garden in case you want to read a book, have a cocktail, take a nap, in other words, take it easy!

We recently put in dozens of Florida Friendly plants, including many to attract butterflies and birds. As is typical of subtropical areas, the yard is full of lizards. its fun to watch them.

This cottage is located in the back yard of the porpery. The whole cottage and cottage porch is for the Avocado Cottage guests, and the yard is shared with the main house (Mango House), which will be on AirBnb starting February 2017. There is access to the cottage from the back of the property, on SW 11th Terrace, or the front, SW 12th St.

We currently do not live in the main house; but we are there often, almost daily, and live just a few blocks away. One of us will meet the guests at arrival, and can offer tips on what to see, where to eat, and any other questions. Our big friendly dog Kango regularly comes with us to the house to keep us company while we work. He loves meeting new guests and is quick to make friends.

Being an Airbnb host is something we love and take pride in. We have had great conversations, gone out with our guests to the Everglades, the New World Symphony, diner and drinks. Other guests prefer to do their own thing; we love that too.

We are avid gardeners and spend some time tending to the topical plants, weeding or planting more butterfly and bird attracting plants. if you see us there feel free to ask us about the plants, lizards and butterflies. We do not spray any pesticides in garden or house. We are very environmentaly concious.

The Avocado Cottage is walking distance to Little Havana, with all the restaurants, art galleries, cigar shops, Tower Theater and other attractions on Calle Ocho (SW 8th Street). Coconut Grove is just a short drive South of us, and we are 2-3 miles from downtown and Coral Gables. For those who like to exercise while on vacation or work Shenandoah Park is less than .5 miles away. It has tennis courts, a small gym, a pool and free Boot Camp classes on Monday and Thursday nights.

As most US cities, Miami is built for cars. Thankfully there are many options even if you do not rent one. The stop for bus 22 is at the end of our block and can take you down to Coconut Grove or up to North Miami. Other routes, 8, 17 and 24 also pass nearby. You can check out the Miami Dade county transit map at their web page:
To ride the buses and the metro, you will need an Easycard, see details here:

The City of Miami has several free trolleys, the Little Havana line and the Coral Way line pass close to our place. You can check all the free trolley routes here:

Uber, Lyft and maybe other ride sharing apps can also be useful. Biking is also possible, especially in the cooler months.

flexible if we don't have other guests arriving/ leaving).
*Please ask us about brining pets. We do love dogs, and our 80-pound friendly dog comes with us when we visit the property. However, some
animals are more problematic, (less behaved than others), so let's talk
before you bring yours.

I am engineer from Europe. I have owned the house in Plantation since 2003 and my girlfriend Kiki and I bought the house with the Avocado Cottage in 2015. I do engineering consulting work, which has me traveling often. Kiki does environmental education - she is a good person to ask about native flora and fauna, and eco-tourism.
I am also into the outdoors, I enjoy dragon boating, scuba diving, hiking, kayaking, sailing, biking, and camping. And of course I love to travel.
