Portobello is an eclectic and historic neighbourhood with stunning canal walks and great cafes for brunch, ethnic cuisine and pubs. It is a 15/20 min stroll to the city centre but it would be a shame to miss out on all this neighbourhood has to offer. On Camden St. there is a multitude of award winning restaurants and bars to choose from as well as Whelans, a fantastic live music venue. Beside the house there is a cafe which is open late and do great Thai food and a fantastic Indian restaurant. If you like fine dining, Within two minutes walk of the cottage is Locks Brasserie, a beautiful restaurant over looking the canal and another new contemporary Irish restaurant called Bastible. Also not to be missed is Gaillot & Grey, a French pizzeria that is a bakery in the morning for fresh sourdough and pastries. Across from the cottage is the MVP bar. A cosy pub which does great cocktails and spud boxes. The Jewish Museum is also located in Portobello and on the weekends there is canal kayaking. A detailed neighbourhood and city guide has been prepared by the host.In Dublin,

Portobello (Irish: Cuan Aoibhinn – meaning 'beautiful harbour') is an area stretching westwards from South Richmond Street as far as Upper Clanbrassil Street bordered on the north by the South Circular Road and on the south by the Grand Canal.

Portobello came into existence as a small suburb south of the city of Dublin in the 18th century, centred on Richmond St. During the following century it was completely developed, transforming an area of private estates and farmland into solid Victorian red-bricked living quarters for the middle classes (on the larger streets), and terraced housing bordering the canal for the working classes.

As a fast-expanding suburb during the 19th century Portobello attracted many upwardly-mobile families whose members went on to play important roles in politics, the arts and the sciences. Towards the end of the century came an influx of Jews, refugees from pogroms in Eastern Europe, which gave the name "Little Jerusalem" to the area.

A great bolthole for a city break: quiet, cosy, beautifully decorated cottage with a sumptuously comfortable bed, just a stroll to fab cafes and restaurants and an easy walk or short bus ride right into the centre of town. Bill provides a brilliant insider's city guide with loads of recommnedations and he's a great communicator. We loved our stay and feel lucky to have experienced it.

Although the cottage isn't in centre of town the walk to get there along the river is really pretty. The cottage is cute and warm with a comfy bed. Would definitely recommend staying here, perfect for a weekend away!

"Bills place" it sounds like a chapter out of Joyce's Dubliners. It is a cottage reminiscent of a bygone era; however, totally updated with modern conveniences. You can close your eyes and imagine the last paragraph of Joyce's Dubliners..."A few light taps upon the pane made him turn to the window. It had begun to snow again..." The location is only a 20min walk from St. Stephen Green ( city centre). The cottage itself was very clean and on a very quiet lane way. The cottage comes with two skylight in the bedroom and one in the kitchen which makes the cottage illuminate with natural light and for those that like to sleep in you can easily pull up the night shades. I will definitely stay at Bill's place again if it's free...

I am originally from South Tipperary. I studied music in U.C.C in Cork and then spent many years studying and working in in San Francisco, Sydney, Barcelona, Cadiz and London. I returned to Dublin 7 years ago where I work as a music therapist in the health and education systems. I also guest lecture part time and am involved in research and academic writing. I play piano, guitar, percussion and sing. My other interests include interior design, cooking, hiking, reading and enjoying Dublin life. My music interests are broad and I listen to electronic music, Flamenco, jazz and folk music. Travel is a real passion, especially to Africa where I have been to Morocco, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. I also love to spend time in the countryside whenever I can, either down in Tipperary or in other beautiful parts of Ireland.
