Charming, artsy, Oklahoma music themed basement apartment in quiet, historic Brady Heights. Just a few blocks from downtown Tulsa, Route 66, BOK, restaurants, music, nightlife, golf course, Guthrie Green, Children's Museum, Woody Guthrie Museum. A very walkable, historic neighborhood. If you are expecting the Hilton, please go there :-) . The apt is nearly 100 years old. We have gotten used to imperfections and welcome those of you who can overlook an exposed pipe or two ;-)
This apartment is in the basement of our 1920s remodeled home in the Historic Brady Heights District. The home is on the National Register of Historic Places. The apt is decorated in a music/art theme. There is a large living room, bedroom with queen bed, dining area, bathroom, private entrance, street parking. I have a roll away bed with two mattresses and a couch if there are more sleeping spaces needed. The floor is painted concrete and the apt is mostly finished out except exposed beams in the bathroom. Some walls are concrete and other interior walls are sheet rock. We also keep a private storage area behind a curtain that is in the bedroom closet.
Because it is a basement apt. you will have to walk down stairs ( toilet is at the top of the stairs ) If you are someone who has trouble with stairs, this may not be the best place for you. For that reason it is also not the best place for small children. If you do bring your older children, know that there are cleaning chemicals under the sink and in the bathroom. This is not the best place for toddlers.
Check out the neighborhood by googling Brady Heights Historic District.
The apt has a studio kitchen with microwave, electric oven, crock pot, waffle iron, hot plate, big fridge, along with lots of coffee, teas, hot coco, oatmeal and other snacks. Bathroom has claw leg tub that is a little higher than usual, pedestal sink. There is also an iron and ironing board available and washer/dryer. There is a TV but limited stations as we don't have cable. I have lots of DVDs though. If you need a hair dryer, let me know and there will be one waiting for you.
Some recent guests were put off by a floor drain in the bathroom. This is common in old 2 story homes of this era. Do not be afraid :-) In the summer the condensation hose runs from the AC to that drain and you just have to deal with it as we can't make water run up... it must go down and this is our best solution.
Please know this is a basement apt and it has its imperfections... ( charm :-) You are not booking a room in the Hilton so please don't expect absolute perfection. There are visible pipes in the bathroom and by a window in the dining area, the floor is painted, there is a drop ceiling and painted concrete block walls in some portions of the apt. The ceiling is insulated for sound but you are going to hear footsteps and muffled conversation every now and then just as you would in any home. We try our best to keep music down and the TV lower so as to not effect your peace. You will not hurt our feelings if we don't notice that you have returned and have kept our music a little louder. Just let us know and we will adjust the volume as it is very important to us that you are happy.
Great walkable neighborhood. Visit the community garden one block behind the home.
We can't take any smokers or pets. Depending on our schedule, we love showing off our city. Don't be afraid to ask. We are right upstairs so if you need a deck of cards, an aspirin or a recommendation for the best hole in the wall restaurant or coffee house, feel free to knock on our door. There is a coffee maker and coffee and tea ready for you. Breakfast is not included in the fee. I used to provide a few things but found that everyone has their own preferences and it wasn't always what I supplied so there was a lot of unnecessary waste. I will leave you some coffee, tea, oatmeal though.
We live in a very walkable, tree lined, historic neighborhood. You are a few steps away from our community garden, bus routes,a few blocks from Owen Park, golf course, One OK Baseball, Music Districts, Guthrie Green, Lots of restaurants and coffee houses, bars, and The Tulsa Children's Museum.
Downtown is about a 15 minute walk. We are about 12 blocks from the BOK where you can take in a great show, Guthrie Green where we showcase a lot of free local and national musicians on weekend evenings and Sunday afternoons in season, Baseball Stadium, the historic Cains Ballroom, Woody Guthrie Center, coffee houses, Arts and Entertainment Districts, Tulsa Country Club and more.
There is a lot to do at night downtown and there is a trolley service available for free on weekends that hits all the hot spots from Brady district to Cherry Street to Brookside.
I can take 2 comfortably but do have pull out mattress and couch for up to 4 guests. Wi Fi available.
We often host house concerts in our home where musicians from all over the country come to perform in our living room. You can check the website for schedules. houseconcertsunlimited If you are fortunate enough to stay with us on one of those evenings you are invited to attend as our guests. ( feel free to make a small donation to the performers ) please let us know if you plan on attending as seating is limited. Concerts are usually over by 10:30.
Bed linens, towels provided unless you wish to bring your own.
I am an artist (URL HIDDEN) If you want to visit my studio on the 2nd floor, let me know.
Also we have a dog ( Scout ) that is a maltese/standard poodle mix who lives upstairs. Not a yippy/yappy dog. She is not allowed in your apt.
Scott, my husband is a family therapist and NPR radio host
(URL HIDDEN) poet and singer/songwriter. He can tell you the best places to hear local music. Twist his arm and he'll take you there.
Just added a little electric fireplace in the apt. You can use it for heat or turn off the heat just for ambiance.
I have tried to cover everything I can think of so that you can feel comfortable giving us a 5 star accuracy, cleanliness, location rating. If you feel like something isn't accurately described, was missed during cleaning, please let me know so that I can remedy it during your stay. I would much rather have a happy guest than a disappointed one.
Please put all of your trash in the trash can and recyclables in the can at the top of the stairs so as not to encourage bugs. You may leave dirty towels draped over tub. Please don't feel like you have to make your bed before you leave. I will need to unmake it to grab linens to wash anyways.
Accès des voyageurs
Guests have access to the entire apt. There is a private entrance to the apt on the north side of the home and the front pathway is lit to welcome you. There is a slider bench in the front yard if you would like to watch the sunset or have your morning coffee. If you would like to visit the back yard, just let us know as the access is from the other side of the house. My husband has asked me to add a request that guests park in such a way to leave us plenty of room to get safely out of our driveway. Thanks!

We love to meet the guests who stay with us but we are often out and about, ourselves. If you see 2 cars in the drive we are probably home but if it is nice out you might find us playing in the back yard garden or taking a walk in the neighborhood. We try to keep our phones with us though when we have guests in the house.
I am an oil painter and have a studio on the 2nd floor of the house. Anyone wishing to visit while you are here, I would be happy to arrange a visit w you. If you would like to get out and about but don't want to go far, knock on the door and I will take you on a tour of the veggie, flower and water gardens in the back yard. Absolutely no smokers or smoking ... that means you can't open a window and blow it outside either :-) Our guests count on there being no allergens here s.o please respect that. I really hate to limit our guests to non smokers but I have had too many smokers who disregarded my request to not smoke in or around the property. It makes tons more work for me and is expensive as I have to air out on cold winter days or hot summer days, wash all bedding, including spreads and other blankets in the room. Please don't ask for exceptions to be made. I know this will cost me $$ through the loss of some guests but my other guests will reap the benefit. So sorry for you nice, rule following smokers :-(
You are in charge of keeping your space clean although if you prefer, we can arrange for cleaning, bed making for long term guests. If there is something we missed when cleaning your space, please let us know so we can take care of it. It is a big space and we hope to hit everything but if we miss something, please don't hesitate to let us know so we can correct it.
We are renting to you only. We expect no parties w outside guests. If you have family in town and are here to visit them, please let us know... We can also bend the rules but want to know what to expect.
We live upstairs and are accessible if you need us.
We do not allow smoking or pets.
We request that you keep noise level low and we will do the same upstairs. unless we have a concert that evening. Concert schedule is on houseco(URL HIDDEN) Please RSVP if you wish to attend.
Check in is flexible depending upon if the apt was rented the night before or not. Count on after 4 but usually available well before that and even if there is cleaning to do, you can feel free to drop your stuff off and head out into the city if you just ask. Check out by 11 am unless other arrangements are made. We often have someone else coming in after you and need to wash towels and bedding and remake bed before they get here.
We hope you enjoy your stay and will do all we can to make that happen for you.
Remember this is a basement apt, which means there are stairs. If you have trouble with stairs or have a toddler, just be aware.
This is a no smoking, no pets apt.
Scott and I live upstairs from the basement apt. The tree house apt is a separate building. Scott is a marriage and family therapist, NPR radio music show host, musician, poet, writer, concert host. Our mother in law house on Cherry St. is right behind his office which is a little grey house. This year we added one more property which is a block away from the River Park. I am an artist and teach adult painting in Tulsa and work with the Arts and Humanities Council as an artist in the schools and have an art residency at the hospital and also teach adult oil painting. Both Scott and I are writers, me with two how-to books on painting and one children's book on foraging and Scott, as of August 2014 is a published author with his book of poetry and lyrics called These Stones. We have books and paintings available for purchase in each property, If it is on the wall and signed by me... it can be purchased. For a full gallery check my website by googling my name, Margaret Aycock.
We open our home to traveling musicians around twice a month and give them an opportunity to share their gifts with our house concert guests and hopefully send them on their way with a good meal, a good night's sleep and pockets full of gas money. If you are fortunate enough to book our place on one of those nights please let us know if you would like to join us. houseco is where you can check out the schedule for those events.
We are both outdoorsy people who both grew up in farm country with a river in the back yard, mine in the Catskill Mountains and Scott in the Mississippi Delta. We have attempted to duplicate some of our childhood surroundings in the back yard with a water garden, flower gardens and a huge organic veggie garden.
We love reading ( Scott was an English Lit major in college), going to great movies, catching free concerts at the Guthrie Green and visiting our favorite restaurants, and of course, hiking around in the wild places in Oklahoma.
We love our neighborhood and city and if we have the time and you would like to, we are free to share our favorite spots with you... places to eat, hidden treasures, outdoor and indoor activities. Just ask.
We try to be the best hosts we can be and welcome your five star reviews. Our happiest guests are those who fully read about our little get aways so they know exactly what to expect, and what not to expect. If there is anything we need to do that we have overlooked please inform us so that we can make your stay a five star stay. We know our little places are not like staying at a fancy hotel but what we have to offer is a warm, home like feel, with welcoming hosts who care about your comfort and enjoyment of our city.
