Two magical compass points intersect at East Meets West, where the unique beauty of Asian art and furnishings melds into an updated cottage, meadows and air that is so pure you can almost taste it.

Imagine a west coast cottage surrounded by majestic British Columbia fir trees, hundreds of feet tall, which stand like the spires of an open-air cathedral, under a crystal blue sky nestled in four acres of rolling pastures for you to wander through at your leisure. The renovated cottage is set in from the road, at the end of a white-fenced driveway with overhanging cherry blossoms. A beautiful barn sits on the property and is available for weddings, receptions, celebrations, retreats and other events.

To everything there is a season & the seasons are reflected year round on the property. Spring is in the air after a longer than usual winter; cherry blossoms have come and gone and plum and magnolias are in full bloom. It's a perfect time for a spontaneous few days with family and/or friends and East Meets West offers an ideal location for this kind of Spring getaway. It's not too early to get your summer plans in place either Bookings are coming in and we'd really love to see you.

We are well situated west of Sooke with easy access to West Coast Road and the most spectacular beaches on Vancouver Island.

The cottage comprises a beautifully elegant living/dining room, an inviting and spacious modern kitchen and three well-appointed bedrooms.

Please note that if the listing you are on now, (Room B) shows FULL on the calendar, there are 3 other listings you can go to as there are 4 separate listings in total for the house. The current prices are Off Season. The whole cottage is listed under its own listing at $300 per night, the ensuite 'Forest Room' is under its own listing at $110/120 per night and the two other rooms, 'The Elephant' and 'Sunset', are under their own respective listings at $100/110 each per night.

Room A, an ensuite King (also called 'The Forest Room') has its own private entrance and deck. An oil on canvas - 'Girl in a Kimono,' and an altar table from Zheijang Province reflect Eastern elements of East Meets West while a parson's table made on Vancouver Island and a sculpture from Galiano Island reflect the West. Views are of enormous cedars, the pastures and the barn.

Room B, once again, the listing you are currently browsing, (also called 'The Elephant Room'), is highlighted with Asian linens and white wicker and palms reminiscent of Somerset Maughan's Bangkok while Room C, 'The Sunset Room,' is a colorful twin/king accented with lotus flower cushions, a 1930's Elmwood kitchen tansu from Korea, a sculpture of a monk from Myanmar and a painting that bears the room's name, 'Sunset.' The Elephant and Sunset rooms share a 'just renovated' bathroom.

In addition, the entire main floor (3 bedrooms, 2 bathooms, kitchen, living room/dining room including the 2 decks )of “The Cottage” can be booked. It is elegant, comfortable, cozy and private as our living space is nicely removed in our own garden suite.

Cable television is available in the inviting kitchen which guests are free to use as their own.

Unfortunately or fortunately cell service is not available but Wifi is. This may be a blessing in disguise for guests wanting a break from the real world.
Guests are welcome to use our land line and, within reason, our computer

We have a lovely Golden Retriever, Sami, who braved 18 hours in cargo from Bangkok to meet you. Although his security detail is ‘questionable,’ his heart is definitely in the right place! The local deer are not amused.

Guests are free to enjoy the easy elegance of the living room where they can read, sit in front of the cozy stone fireplace absorbing the aesthetic beauty of Eastern cultures or listen to music selected from a 300+ CD collection. Peace and tranquillity, lively conversation and laughter are constants here.

Off the living room is a spacious deck overlooking an expansive lawn bordered with firs. We provide full, nutritious breakfasts with items such as Asian inspired smoothies (mango with mint, pineapple, kiwi or papaya), fresh fruit in season, delicious frittattas, omelettes, pancakes, sausages, bacon, and 'just out of the oven' muffins, scones and breads, made with free range eggs from the neighbour down the road. Coffee and a good selection of teas are also offered. Breakfast can be inside or out on the deck, whichever you prefer. Julie and Michael will provide dinner on request and the food and ambience are second to none.

Alternately, you are free to use the newly renovated kitchen to cook full course meals and in between browse through the small but eclectic library housed in a 1890's armoire from Myanmar! After breakfast it's croquet or Bocce on the side lawn!

As previously mentioned, a handsome barn formerly used to board horses, is available for weddings, receptions and other events and of course to guests who simply want to take in the scent of the strong cedar beams that support it or secure their kayaks, bikes, and recalcitrant children while staying with us!

After running an 'Oasis in Bangkok', we came to understand how much our guests enjoyed interacting with us during their stay. We have brought this same style of hosting to Otter Point and go far beyond answering questions about highway directions or the new round-a-bout in Sooke (which of course we will gladly do) to animated discussions that enable us to get to know you and you us and to look forward to a return visit! By inviting you to share and experience the same comfort we do in our home, we feel that we are offering something truly unique.

We are 10.7 kilometres from Sooke (a very direct route via West Coast Road, Kemp Lake Road and 1.5 kilometres along Otter Point Road), and 5 minutes from the West Coast Road and Gordon's Beach where hiking trails and panoramic views of the Olympic Peninsula abound. The West Coast Road is also the road to Port Renfrew where you pass by French Beach, Sandcut Beach, Jordan River, China Beach, Mystic and Sombrio as well as through spectacular rain forests. There are some moderate day hikes along the route to Port Renfrew which are part of the well known Juan De Fuca Trail namely China Beach, Sombrio Beach, Parkinson Creek, and the botanical beach at Port Renfrew itself. This amazing natural phenomena, living in the tide pools on the beach. has been designated a World Heritage site and is home of one of the world's most unique ecosystems. It is a 'must see.' Good eateries in Port Renfrew are The Coastal Cafe and The Pub at Port Renfrew.

Among good restaurants close by are the renowned Sooke Harbour House (Pricey), Stickleback Eatery nestled into a lovely cove where the odd kayaker or paddle boarder will give you a friendly wave, Wild Mountain, Route 14, Point No Point, The Smoking Tuna in East Sooke, Shirley Delicious or The Little Vienna Bakery, to name a few. Fishing trips, whale watching, kayaking and other water activities are at your fingertips and we will put you in touch with excellent service providers. We can also arrange for in house massage.

A car or motorbike is a must.

In addition to this listing, (B,'The Elephant Room'), each of our other bedrooms, (A) 'The Forest Room' and (C) 'The Sunset Room' plus 'The Cottage' have their own listings. If your choice of room is unavailable (i.e. we are ‘full’ for that room), we encourage you to check the other rooms by going to their respective links. Once again, these are:

Julie was gracious, friendly and welcoming and we felt totally relaxed in her elegant and cosy home. The gas fireplace and the lovely decor, beautiful views, fabulous kitchen and great music made our early family Christmas celebration totally relaxing and enjoyable. Just perfect!!!

Julie and Mike were very courteous and welcoming, they went out of their way to provide us with a great breakfast experience although we are very independent travellers [sorry for depriving you guys from frying the breakfast bacon ;)] and we start our morning at 6AM. When we were done surfing and at the house we had great conversations with Julie and Mike all the while. Please note that their place is neatly decorated with far-eastern influence from their travels and the current pictures of the place do not even tell how awesome this place is. This lovely farmhouse situated just on the outskirts of Sooke (car is a must) in a very tranquil and scenic spot situated in close proximity to the surfing spots between Jordan River and Port Renfrew.

A+++++++, such a wonderful stay with Julie and Michael! Highly recommend this beautiful cottage. We enjoyed discovering every piece of art, every book, it was such a thoughtfully and expertly curated space for feeling completely at home yet with discovery and delight at every turn. And as lovely and welcoming as the space itself is, the hosts are even better! At once completely available and completely unobtrusive they offered wonderful suggestions and delightful company (and delicious breakfast!). We loved every minute and cannot wait to come back! Thank you, Julie and Michael!

I would highly recommend Julie and Michael’s room to anyone. Julie and Michael were very welcoming and eager to make sure our stay was a good one. I booked this for my son and his friend, Julie was great at sending us messages before arrival and was able to direct us if we needed help or give us suggestions. The house was just like it shows in the ad and was clean and was quiet and had everything and just a great vibe.

The hosts Julie and Michael were very welcoming and friendly. The house was just like it shows in the ad and was clean and comfortable. This B & B is out in the country so is very quiet. We were attending a wedding just a couple blocks away so was a perfect location. Their dog Sammy is also very welcoming and adds a nice touch to the stay. I would recommend this property to others. Perfect for a family or group as you could book all 3 bedrooms and have the entire floor to yourselves. Denise in Nanaimo

What a great place ! More of a homestay than a B&B as you're immediately made part of the family. Quiet beautiful location, extravagant breakfasts, friendly dogs, entertaining hosts. We were also given an upgrade to an en suite room, which was very generous, thanks.

My husband Michael and I have recently returned to our native Canada after living in Asia for 28 years and have re-branded 'An Oasis in Bangkok' as 'East Meets West.' We feel that 'East Meets West' captures the melding of Asian furnishings and art collected over many years into a west coast setting..... an elegant renovated cottage surrounded by tranquil pastures

We are confident that we can offer something truly unique and invite you into our home to share 'our Asia' with you as well as countless stories of lives well led. If you have not travelled to Asia, this may just give you the incentive to start planning a trip and we would be very happy to share the 'best of the best' of Japan, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Saigon, Phnom Penh and Bangkok, cities we have lived and worked in and have come to know the people, the cultures, the cuisine, the languages and other 'ins and outs.'

Our style of hosting is to welcome you into our home to share and experience the comfort we do and to do our utmost to ensure you feel relaxed, happy and are provided with the creature comforts and all the information you need. When you leave, we are also confident that it will be after a restorative stay with a genuine desire to come back again soon.
