Description

Quirky, vintage style for extraordinary travellers! Bed & Breakfast 10 miles west of luscious Ludlow. Old farmhouse with 3 double or twin bedrooms each with bath or shower for 2, 4 or 6 guests. Price is per room for two guests. Delicious dinners too!

Three bedrooms to choose from in this old Farmhouse/Country house accommodation on the borders of north Herefordshire and south Shropshire where England meets Wales. Just 15 minutes west of historic Ludlow, this gorgeous old farmhouse offers award-winning breakfasts and delicious dinners off the beaten track in rural bliss! Set in a pretty hamlet just above the meandering river Teme there is rolling countryside with fabulous views for miles.
The Food: Henry and Carolyn Chesshire are fine hosts and love to share their home with guests from all over the world. This is where you'll get a true taste of the area and the food served is renowned for its distinctiveness and authenticity to the region. Totally specialising in local & seasonal produce throughout the year, Carolyn creates proper country breakfasts and sumptuous dinners using fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden, eggs and pork from the free-range, organically fed hens and pigs, venison and game from the forest up the lane and other meats from neigbouring farms. All food is freshly prepared and cooked on an Aga and served in the large dining room with its long, oak table, crystal chandeliers, silver candlesticks & cutlery, gleaming glassware, bone china & open, log-fire. There's a cosy drawing room with masses of books, board games, glossy magazines and wood-burner for relaxing and taking cream teas. Committed to the principles of Slow Food, Henry and Carolyn work very hard to ensure that everything is either home-made or locally sought, caught or bought from small-scale producers and does not shop in any multi-national supermarkets. They are true "locavores"! Carolyn co-organises The Mortimer Country Food Fair, runs Cook Days from her sunny farmhouse kitchen, takes groups on Food Safaris, demonstrates at many Food Festivals and gives talks on running a Local Food business. She's been on national television and radio numerous times featuring these themes.
The Bedrooms: Of the three bedrooms there are two double rooms each with a sofa-bed and with either bath or shower en suite and a twin/double room with private bathroom. All five or six foot wide beds, sumptuous linen, feather-down down quilts, fluffy towels/robes with lots of locally made organic wash & hair lotions. The house is decked out with family antiques, portraits, vintage finds and eclectic collections of glass, china, books and pictures galore.
Outside: The house is surrounded by the old farmyard of mellow brick and stone barns with stables, home to owls, bats and native and migrating birds. The country garden is full of shrubs, cottage garden plants, free-range hens, a couple of cats and Copper the adorable Labrador. He'll take you down to the ancient millstream and across the bridge to the horses' field. He'll also take you for walks in any direction and show you his favourite views, riverside walks and farmland romps. There are routes in every direction down quiet country lanes, footpaths, bridlepaths and green lanes. A haven for wildlife and perfect for walkers, cyclists and horse-riders. All peace and quiet and with no light pollution the dark night skies are brimful with stars on clear evenings.
Further Afield: Lower Buckton is ten miles west of historic Ludlow with all its mediaeval charms and is in easy reach of the historic county towns of Shrewsbury, Hereford and Worcester. There are so many castles, churches, grand houses and gardens to visit: many of them National Trust and English Heritage and quaint little country market towns have quirky shops and fascinating museums. Never a dull moment and so much to explore. Walking Offas Dyke, the legendary divide between Wales and England will reveal Wales in all its glory!
Facilities and services: As well as all the usual features of an exceptionally good house there is lots of safe parking, collection from local railway station arranged and free-wifi in the house. If you have a special request, just ask!
All rooms are £100.00 each for two guests/bed breakfast. Open all year for bed and breakfast, speciality dinners, house-parties, celebrations and get-togethers. There is also a Shepherd's Hut available for "glamping" and is listed separately on airbnb.

Choice of three bedrooms with guests' drawing room and dining room, gardens and walks.

Henry and Carolyn Chesshire are your hosts and the atmosphere is of a country, family home with connections to the area through the generations of their families and a wealth of local knowledge going back 100s of years!

A feeling of belonging, being native to the area and true country living.
Wide open spaces, walks.

Wonderful stay. Albeit it very short! Carolyn and Henry made us feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The views were superb and the house was just a treasure trove of wonderful things to cast your eyes on. Bed was very comfy and breakfast was out of this world.

Carolyn and Henry are truly amazing hosts. We felt very welcome to Lower Buckton and thoroughly enjoyed the use of the beautiful bedrooms, comfy lounge, large dining room and secluded gardens. We arrived to a welcoming fire and tea and delicious home made scones with home made jam and cream. The beds are incredibly comfy and the lack of noise and air pollution an experience not to be missed. Breakfast is incredible with home made porridge, freshly picked fruit, home preserved damsons and freshly squeezed apple juice followed by a full cooked English breakfast. On Saturday night we dined in house, tasting Carolyns home made produce, tasty canapes and excellent cooking. We chose to eat with our hosts again on Sunday enjoying not only Carolyns superb cooking but our hosts excellent company. Nothing was too much trouble to ensure our stay was thoroughly enjoyed. The house and its eclectic contents are so interesting and Carolyn has all the tourist books of local places of interest ready for perusal. The local countryside is unprecedented, lovely lanes for walking or driving unhindered and stunning views. Wildlife and wild flowers galore. Our St Bernard enjoyed the freedom of the gardens and set herself as a mascot on the doorstep, not wanting to leave. Carolyn and Henry were very accommodating with our two dogs and we really appreciated the relaxed atmosphere and attention to detail. Staying with Carolyn and Henry was just a wonderful relaxing experience and we look forward to staying with them again same time next year. The family voted it as the best place we have ever stayed by far!

It was an absolute delight to arrive at the house which is one of the most picturesque, peaceful and interesting bnb's that I have stayed in. Henry welcomed us with a pot of tea and very nice cakes served in the lovely back garden. The bedroom ( blue) had a fabulous view over the Shropshire counteyside, truly a room with a view and a very comfy bed. breakfast was delicious using locally sourced produce and nicely cooked. A great break. Vicki and I can't wait to return.

Myself and two girlfriends visited this delightful property for a weekend getaway and had a fantastic time. Carolyn and Henry were very kind to let us check in early, and even for one of our group to use their house phone to locate the others (as mobile phone signal is almost non-existent). The home itself was absolutely charming, and the Yellow Room which we stayed in was quaint, well equipped, and spotlessly clean. The hosts themselves are wonderful and attentive from the get go. We had great interactions with Henry, especially after we learnt that the numerous portraits which hung on the walls were all relatives of his. He even went so far as to put our Prosecco in the fridge for us, and then serve it as a before dinner treat. Carolyn is a fantastic cook, and wonderfully catered to my vegan requirements. This undoubtedly went above and beyond, and I am so grateful for the thought and care she put in to making sure our stay really was five stars. The surrounding area is beautiful, and there are numerous cozy pubs that one can visit. I would however recommend bringing a car to get to the start of some of the more well known walks. Also be aware that, as already mentioned, mobile phone signal can be non-existent, although the property itself does have wi-fi that can be accessed for free. Overall a lovely stay in a wonder idyllic location, perfect for overnight trips like our own, or for longer stays (as some of the guests whom we dined with were doing). Thank you again Carolyn and Henry!

Réponse de Carolyn :
Dear Clara, thank you for your lovely review and feedback. You were all five star guests! As you point out, the house is now available either as a whole for self-catering sleeping ten in five double rooms or in multiples of two in three double rooms for bed and breakfast. I'm trying to update my listings!! Yes, mobile coverage is a pain - works best for Orange/EE unless you climb a mountain! x
