It would have been great if our host had actually LET US IN. We knocked on his door, called him a couple of times - all to no avail. He eventually switched off his phone. We assumed that he did not let us in because we arrived late. We had already made the full payment for the room, mind you. And we had told him we would be a little late. After spending the night in the car (it was freezing and I had two toddlers with me), we called him again early in the morning and asked him if we could use the room to freshen up (the check out time was 11am so technically we could still use the room). But our host finally answered the call and shut us down in a curt manner. Not only did we not get to use the room despite having paid for it, we were not even refunded. I can (try to) understand that he did not give us the room at night because we were late, but what I can't understand why we were not allowed to use the room in the morning to freshen up. We had booked and paid for the room till 11am, didnt we? Since we were doing a road trip around Iceland, we had been staying in a different hotel every night here. Not once did any hotel/home owner shut the door on us because we arrived a little past the check-in time. This was the first time we booked a room with airbnb and it was a horrible experience.
