The peaceful village of Megalochori makes a much sought after and appreciated alternative to the bustling and jostling of the busy city of Fira. Mansion Sophia, a rare find, is a just short stroll from the central village square with its pretty churches and picturesque Venetian bell towers. The village, with its winding cobbled pathways, is free of traffic. The imposing large wooden entrance gates of Mansion Sophia conceal a secluded and pretty private courtyard, complete with the recent addition of a swimming pool. Double doors lead directly from the courtyard into a spacious lounge and dining area with its superb high vaulted ceilings and original polished wooden floors, adding warmth and character to the room. The two double bedrooms, one master and one smaller second bedroom, lead off from either side of the central living room. The master bedroom has a majestic four-poster double bed. One bathroom, with modern amenities, services both bedrooms. The well equipped kitchen has an original stone arch which now serves as a washing up and preparation area. The coup-de-grace is the lovely kitchen garden, perfect for enjoying alfresco meals under blue skies whilst absorbing the village atmosphere.

Mansion Sophia was built around the mid 19th century and inhabited by one of the feudal landlords of the island at that time. These merchants and land barons became wealthy exporting the unique Vinsanto wine the island still produces. Trade brought wealth and wealth brought the Mansion Houses. Megalochori had a particularly strong link with the town of Odessa in Russia. Many of the church bells which still toll in the village today are from Russia and have a very distinct clarity.

This Mansion is perfect for those ready to switch of their mobiles, put their feet up, sit back and enjoy Santorini from a different perspective. The tourist attractions, including Fira and Oia, are only a short drive away.

The place is lovely and centrally located on Santorini with easy access to Thira or the lovely beaches on the south side of the island. It's very easy to access and the host arranges for pick-up/drop-off from the airport or port. The pool is wonderful and the space is quaint but lovely. The nearby restaurants in the village are also quite good. The host and caretakers do a great job in organizing events for you, we did the catamaran sailing around the island which was wonderful. The setting of the apartment is in the hills away from the ocean which is nice and quiet. The downside to the location is that mosquitos come out at dusk due to the lack of wind. You need to be prepared for them with spray and making sure none get into the apartment. Overall it was a pleasant stay but just be prepared for the mosquitos which got the best of us in August.

Dear Clifton, thank you so much for the kind words! We are thrilled that you had such good time in our villa! Regarding mosquitos, usually they are not a big issue in Santorini, except during certain weather conditions as in your case (no wind at all & humidity, rare for our island). In any case, we always have complimentary mosquito repellent devices in all bedrooms. Thanks again and we hope to accomodate you again in the future!

Great area to stay in away from the busy streets of Fira and Oia. The restaurant across from the small market and clothing store is very good, try the saganaki! The house was great and the pool was so relaxing. If you come in June like we did you'll want to bring bug spray and sunscreen! The house is very clean but we did get lots of bug bites (mesquitoes probably). I also highly recommend renting atv or vespas to get around the town. Once you get the hang of driving them they're a really fun option for seeing a lot of the island. Everyone was very helpful and made our stay one we'll never forget. Thank you.
