Featured on the Tastemakers Africa Johannesburg list of best Airbnb's in Africa and in the British Airways in-flight magazine full page article on the rise of Joburg CBD, this huge (2500sqft/230sqm) apartment is spread over the 9th, 10th and 11th floor of the heritage (listed), former Barclays Bank HQ, building on the oldest street in Johannesburg.
It's less than 10 minutes walk to the closest Citysightseeing open-top hop-on-hop-off tour bus stop, about 25 minutes drive from Johannesburg airport and 10 minutes away from the Gautrain station, giving direct access to Rosebank, Sandton, Pretoria and the airport.
It is also less than 10min Uber ride to Maboneng, Braamfontein, Joziburg lane and 1Fox street, making it perfectly located to experience the city's urban revival and access the coolest parts of Jo'burg, whilst not having to put up with the noise that goes with actually staying in these areas.
The layout of the apartment was designed so that the main living spaces would all benefited from outdoor space and the amazing city views.
On the entrance floor of the apartment there is a Master bedroom suite which incorporates a large en-suite bathroom (with a huge walk in shower as well as a separate bath) walk-in-wardrobe and extra length queen sized bespoke four-poster bed; a second bedroom which also has an extra length queen bed, cupboard and a desk; a third bedroom with two extra length single beds; and another bathroom.
The middle floor of the apartment has an open plan living area (with a fabulous woodburning stove), dining area (with a six-seater dining table) and gourmet kitchen with slate counters, bespoke handmade cabinetry and stainless steel Smeg appliances. All of which creates an amazing homely room to hang out in. The Middle floor also has newly installed air conditioning.

All of the bedrooms and the main living area have triple-glazed windows to keep the city sounds out and the warmth in, during the short South African winters. Each of the bedrooms has a fan.
An iron spiral staircase leads up from the living area, to the top floor deck room, with access to the roof deck which has ample seating around a fire pit, plus a built in bbq/braai and Jacuzzi with North facing (sunny side) city views.
The apartment also has a Sonos wifi sound system so if you have downloaded the Sonos app (from the iPhone or Android App Store) you can play music from your phone, PC or tablet wirelessly, in any of the main rooms.

It's 5 minutes away from the party capital of Maboneng, but far enough away to be quiet at night.

Guest will have exclusive access to the entire apartment plus wifi, satellite TV, the Jacuzzi and the roof deck. You will also have access to the communal (shared) roof top swimming pool.

I travel a lot, so unlikely to be in town during your stay, however my co-host, Dylne, lives in the building and he will be available to assist with keys handover etc.
The minimum stay is two days as but I can do accommodate single night stays, during the week, but at a night rate approximately 30% higher. Also I have another 3 bed apartment in the same building. So, if this apartment isn't available for the whole time you'd like it, please send me a note. I quite often have guest that will stay in this apartment for a few days and experience penthouse living, then move down one floor to the other apartment for the rest of their stay.
It is one of the oldest buildings in town, there are often film shoots happening either in the building, or on the surrounding streets, at the weekend (the area looks like NY or London, but is cheaper and has better light). They're sometimes a bit of a pain as you may have to wait for a break in shooting, to get past.
There is quite a distance between the solar hot water tank, on the roof, and the bathrooms, so you need to run the taps for a couple of minutes to get the hot water.
Because of the layout of the apartment, the bathroom drains have pumps. Don't be surprised to hear a pump turn on for a couple of seconds, each time you flush the loo, run a tap or have a shower. The power switch to these pumps are above the toilets, in each bathroom, and must be left on at all times.
Please remember that this is my home and I value my relationship with my neighbours, so...
• Courtesy and avoiding late night loud music, would be appreciated.
• No smoking
• No parties, no outside visitors or overnight guests without previous agreement from me.
• Do not engage in illegal activities anywhere on the property.
• If you break or damage something, please let me know so we can arrange for its replacement or repair.
• Avoid flushing foreign objects (aside from tissues) down the toilets. This blocks the plumbing and can flood the bathrooms.
• Return all keys
For security, I will replace the front door lock if any keys are not returned. Guests will be charged R1000 to cover the cost.
There is a switch above the toilet in each bathroom, this is for the waste pumps and must be left on at all times, to avoid flooding.
Free Wifi available is up to 500MB per day. Usage beyond that may require a top up on the system, at a cost of R100/GB.
If you need a power adaptor, please ask Dylne to lend you one. You'll need to return it with the keys. Replacement of any that are not returned will cost R150.
A number of people have asked about using the apartment for film or television shoots. I have a separate location agreement in place, so this is not an option for rental booked via Airbnb.

Hi, I'm Ade. Originally from the UK, I moved to South Africa in 2005 and fell in love with the place!
I've renovated a couple of spaces, in old buildings, since I arrived. I've had such a positive response from guests that have stayed in these spaces, that I'm in the midst of renovating 3 more spaces and will make them available via Airbnb.
So Airbnb asked me to list 5 things I like. Well, in no particular order...
Building and home renovation. I'm about to start my third renovation in Johannesburg city centre. Have loved creating unique spaces and learning from each project. The fact that these types of building's would be out of my reach, in any major city in Europe or America, makes it that bit more enjoyable.
Music. I have a real passion for music. More playing than making, though I am in the process of learning to play the piano, and was a fairly reasonable DJ in my younger days (does that count as making?). I'm slowly building up my Sonos system (Lego for adults), which is great for filling your home with sounds controlled from the iPad!
Football. Tottenham Hotspurs (Spurs). Yes there are one or two fans outside of Tottenham
