Perfect enviroment to relax, to cool down from the stressfull life in the city!
Bring your friends and family and let yourself go on this country side experience with an enchanted enviroment in a beautiful landscape where nature leads!

The structure of the house remained as it always was. The infrastructure was changed and the roof

replaced for greater thermal comfort.

The bakery, which is now closed for almost fifty years, is today a comfortable living room with walls of

schist, a recreational and convivial space. The oven was kept as a fireplace but it is still possible to make

bread. On the first floor, five of the six rooms have private bathrooms. Another living room, quieter, with

luminous windows to the courtyards, invites us to reading. The upstairs patio is covered by vines until

wintertime and its shadow invites us to stay. It leads to the pine forest and the fruit trees, one of which is a

huge fig tree that provides shade all year round and figs in July. From there you can do walks through the

mountain and along the river and streams, through the tracks of the Great Route of the Zêzere, on foot or

by bike. On hot days the small tank on the courtyard is ideal to refresh the body, just as several river pools

in villages close to the farm. The lower courtyard, more intimate, refreshed by the sound of the fountain

and where a cypress grows, gives access to the road and the village of Barroca, on the right bank of the

River Zêzere, which source is nearby in the mountains of Serra da Estrela.

The cleaning lady nd myself will always be available to all the guests.

The Great Route of Zêzere (Grande Rota do Zêzere) is a pedestrian/MTB trail that follows the Zêzere

River throughout its length (370 km), from its source in Covão d’Ametade (Serra da Estrela) until it joins

the Tagus in Constância. The signalling is already done, but the trail has not yet been officially opened.

The Schist Villages Network (Rede das Aldeias do Xisto) includes 27 villages of 16 municipalities situated

in the centre of Portugal, in the area that lies between Castelo Branco and Coimbra. The region is mainly

formed by schist mountains, surrounded and crossed by a good road network.

The oldest part of Barroca is located along a small hill, flanked by two deep waterlines, forming a set that

is perpendicular to the course of the Zêzere, to which it is adjacent.

At the Casa Grande, an old mansion from the XVIII century, operates today the Development Centre for

the villages of schist. In Barroca there is still a rural atmosphere, guided by the agricultural cycles. The

surrounding landscape is framed by a pine forest and by the pyramids of waste rock of Lavaria do Cabeço

do Pião, which in older days belonged to the Panasqueira mines.

The Casa Grande also houses an Interpretation Center of this heritage and encourages us to explore the

Route of Rock Art (Rota da Arte Rupestre) of Pinhal Interior.

There are several river beaches nearby:

- Praia Fluvial de Lavacolhos

- Praia Fluvial de Janeiro de Cima

- Praia Fluvial de Janeiro de Baixo

Serra da Estrela is a 45 minutes’ drive from Barroca, therefore it’s an excellent opportunity to spend a day

In 2003 rock carvings were discovered on the bed of the River Zêzere.

It is a 20 minutes’ walk from the house.

"These representations of horses are a characteristic feature of the Palaeolithic. This finding is extremely

significant in the context of the prehistoric art known in Portugal because it not only broadens the

knowledge on the archaic art but also demonstrates that the open air Palaeolithic rock art is widely spread

throughout the inland regions" - Martinho Baptista, Director of CNAR (Centro Nacional de Arte Rupestre -

National Centre of Rock Art).

The carvings are only visible from May to September.

Francisco was responsive and Maria de Jesus gave us the warmest of welcomes: a basket of fresh-picked figs upon arrival and a wonderful breakfast each morning with her homemade cakes, jams, and amazing local cheese.

Lameirinhos house is a truly oasis, a mountain retreat, warm and bright. The bedrooms are comfortable and quiet and the common spaces are perfect to gather with all the friends, really enjoying the house. Due to the large areas, divided in two floors, each of us was free to enjoy every moment to do what we wanted, by our self or in company: read a book, relax, watch a movie, play cards, or talk. Here the afternoons were relaxed. Some of us choose to stay in the garden, in the water tank, or in one of the courtyards. Around the house there are a lot of things to do. The time was spent hiking in the forest, along Zêzere River or at the river beaches nearby Barroca. It was lovely to woke up and be surprised with a fresh clipped vegetables basket left at the courtyard table , a kind, spontaneous gesture from Maria de Jesus. To those who love to take bike rides, there are great trails around. In brief: A wonderful experience and highly recommendable!
