Le logement

Woodend Cottage is quite remote and situated in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria.

Through the front door you enter into the lounge with log burner and exposed beams, views towards Scafell Pike and a door that leads to the utility room, downstairs WC and kitchen.

Stairs lead from the lounge to a landing, off which there are the three bedrooms. The master is a double, the second can be configured as either a double or a twin (please confirm when booking how you would like it set up) and the third is a twin (with adult sized bunks). There is also a bathroom.

Most rooms have exposed beams and all are furnished with care and thought.

Located quite high on Birker Fell (950') and approached from the fell along a single track road through a gate, it has fantastic views across the fell towards Scafell Pike, (England's highest mountain), and is a ten minute walk from one of the smaller of the lakes, Devoke Water, which never the less is nearly a mile long.

The kitchen and garden have incredible views towards Scafell Pike, Bow Fell and Crinkle Craggs. Within twenty minutes walking you can be at the top of Devoke Seat where, on a clear day, you have a 360 degree panoramic view that includes Devoke Water, the Langdales, the coast and the Isle of Man.

Accès des voyageurs

An enclosed private garden at the front and rear and a patio area from where you have spectacular views towards Scafell Pike. There is also use of a nearby field.

An absolutely fabulous stay in this beautiful, quiet, well-equipped cottage- with the most spectacular views. We were celebrating my mum's 90th birthday in style! Paul had stayed in communication with me prior to our visit so that our arrival and stay ran smoothly even though he was away at the time. Thank you for a very comprehensive visitors' pack which gave information about the amenities at the cottage and places local routes to walk as well as places to visit nearby.

The cottage was very quaint and cosy but with adequate space and facilities- very good value for money- would recommend wholeheartedly.

Only stayed for a couple of days and weather was not too good but would love to return to get the best of the stunning views and many walks from outside the front door. Very welcoming, helpful and friendly hosts. Lovely, comfortable cottage, a good place to return to after wet and windy walks!

We had a great time at Woodend Cottage - Paul supplied us with some lovely local produce and home made bread on arrival, and the house and setting itself is wonderfully secluded. Perfect for getting away from the bustle of a city, there are great views over the hills and abundant local walks - the waterfall at Stanly Ghyll Force is particularly worth a visit. We'd love to come back and stay again at some point in the future.

Our family life is pretty mad at the moment and we are all feeling a little overwhelmed. We were staying at Woodend while visiting the area to look for a new place to live up against some very demanding time restrictions and a long, long way from our current home. We booked in the morning of the day we arrived and communication was intermmitent as we were in a dead zone for signal for most of the day climbing fells between house viewings. But Paul and Jella had gone the extra mile to make sure that the cottage was ready to receive our tired and by that time grumpy bunch. We walked through the door ... Me, three boys who had been in a car most of the previous two days and our weary friend Ian .... The light was gentle and mellow on a cold winter evening and I could feel the walls of the cottage embrace us as we settled to give up the day. We had arrived in the dark so quite unaware of cottage surrounding. In day light it's location is stunning, mesmerising in scale and so peaceful. An absolutely perfect retreat that made us stop, review and rest when we were not expecting to. On a practical level the facilities are just right..large pans to cook for a large family, a cooker appropriate for cooking on a decent scale, a fire that warms the whole building, underfloor heating for the chilly mornings and comfy, comfy beds. Visitors are privy to an extremely comprehensive welcome book so if you want to be private you can with everything you need to know at your finger tips. Conversely, if you are in a sociable mood or need help Paul or Jella are easy to find. We also really appreciated the “low impact” approach that is employed at Woodend with facilities that encourage to take responsibly but delivered gently without being preachy and demanding...just the right balance. All in all, we had a wonderful time at Woodend...even the boys who at 7 10 and 13 will “be boys” seemed to calm a little and give a short reprieve...or was it just that they were content and filed with Paul’s home grown sausages and bacon?... which are a must!! Our only regret was that we didn’t have opportunity to try Woodend Bread...ah well good reason to return

I have fond memories of my holidays, the places visited and in many cases the years that I took them so we feel that making peoples holidays memorable is a prime responsibility. Most of our time is spent at Woodend working at home in this stunning location with this small collection of quirky individual cottages to look after. Other than that I enjoy live music and jointly organise our regular local live music event every 2 months, Music in Ulpha. When we do make time to get away we like to travel abroad or explore the UK in our caravan.
