Le logement

Your indoor space is small but very efficient. Here are the basics: great indoor shower with hot running water, composting toilet, sink with hot running water, futon with thick double mattress and solar run LED lights also outlets for phone recharging. All linens are provided but there is no washer or dryer. Nearest laundromat is 15 minutes away in Keaau. A great place to experience the world of solar power on a small scale.
The outdoor kitchen area all under cover has a kitchen counter with running hot water and basin to do clean-up. A propane two burner cook stove is provided. A table and chairs under a large screened gazebo is a new addition for your comfort. There is no refrigerator but a large cooler is available for your perishables. Please pick up ice for this when you do your shopping. (All cutlery, crockery and dishes are provided along with a generous supply of paper products, soap,- shampoo and little extras like cooking oil, salt/pepper, coffee sample/ creamer & sugar and glad wrap. The coffee maker is a French press. There is no coffee grinder.

We are a much better option to camping as nights on the east side of the island usually brings rain. It is comfortable and gives privacy along with a secured place to keep your valuables while exploring the island. The windows are screened plus they open and close as does the sliding glass door. It is comfortable in summer & winter as this is new double wall construction with ohia wood features.

Accès des voyageurs

This "Little House" is centrally located between Hilo, Volcano National Park, and Pahoa (20 min each way). Just turn into Hawaiian Acres one mile north of Kirtistown onto Kuauli Rd.. We are 5 miles from the Volcano Hwy 11 on a paved Road 8.

Yes, this small house is completely off grid. ( No TV, microwave, hair dryer, washer or dryer, refrigerator or WiFi ). The composting toilet has a handle to turn which rotates peat moss in the space below the lid that opens or closes when using. It is a state of the art piece of equipment.
Also the 12 volt lights work great. Please be mindful of light usage at night. All lights must be off when retiring for the evening. We are not far away & can bring by another battery if needed. The battery also powers the water pump and a USB charging plug to keep your cell phones going.

this little hideaway is well-situated for both volcanoes national park and hilo, but is tucked away a short drive from both. check-in and out was very simple, and fern was super helpful with communication and arrangements. the hideaway itself is small and fairly basic, but has everything you need (including insect repellent!) and was great for a simple yet comfortable base. we loved the shower, had no problems cooking on the camp stove with the kit provided, and it was great relaxing against the backdrop of the sounds of the tropical surroundings. a great stay!

All the relaxing feel of camping with the comforts of a home. Tucked away yet still close to all the hidden gems the Puna district has to offer. Great get away on the big island!

It was the perfect little tropical hideaway! While small, it's very well stocked with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The bed is comfy, there's a hot shower and you get to wake up in the middle of a rainforest! Don't be deterred by the composting toilet - it's really not a big deal. It is a dirt driveway, but it's well maintained and very smooth, so we had no problems. It's a great location for exploring that part of the island! We'd definitely come back again next time!

If you love camping, but like French press coffee in the AM, this place is for you. The outdoor camping-style "kitchen" was convenient & well-equipped; the screened "porch" was a great space to enjoy the evening . The hosts were wonderfully accommodating. The composting toilet was easy to use and odorless. A small cozy space to be shared by couples or close friends.

Profil utilisateur de Fern And Bruce

Bruce and Fern have lived on the Hilo side of the "Big Island or Hawaii Island" in Hawaiian Acres since 2000. Fern Grotto cottage vacation rental is only 7 miles away. In 2011 they bought a condo on the west side in Kailua- Kona at Kona Mansions V. It has been a pleasure for them to host quests on both sides of the " Big Island". Bruce and Fern see to both Fern Grotto cottage and their Kona condo themselves. They are happy knowing guests arrive to a clean and welcoming atmosphere. Special touches given with care for their quests are present throughout.
It takes a good 21/2 hours to travel from one side of the Island to the other and with so much to see on both. Bruce and Fern suggest to anyone coming for the 1st time to stay both sides. More time in Kona if you are a sun-seeker, enjoy walking past shops and restaurants with great ocean breezes, views and white sandy beaches. On the East side stay at least 2-3 days to see the Volcano National Park, waterfalls, rain forest (and yes Fern Grotto cottage does have a lava tube). Also a fun thing to do at night is to go to Volcano and view Halemaumau Crater from both the lodge and museum along the Kilauea Crater rim. Be sure to bring a fleece jacket for those cool evenings. Bruce and Fern provide umbrellas and flashlights at the cottage. Just some of those thoughtful touches your hosts think of!
Bruce and Fern have Fern Grotto cottage vacation rental on the east side and the Kona Mansions condo also a vacation rental on the west side for everyone to enjoy!
IT HAS BEEN 3 YEARS COMING BUT WE WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE THE TROPICAL HIDEAWAY! Glamorous camping at its best! Please check it out.
