Description

This is a lovely apartment located on the second floor of a vintage courtyard building. It is full of an interior designers personal collection of furniture and goodies, which will nearly guarantee a good response when posting on social media :-)

As a pretty good airbnb host with nearly 8,000 square feet of conjoined and cobbled together Chicago flats in one building, I decided that I needed a proper place to actually call home. I proceeded to really invest in a space that reflected my personality and was filled with snazzy furniture. Sad but true, I much prefer my little nook down in the cellar and this flat sits empty 95% of the time. I list it with a bit of hesitation on Airbnb, simply because I really love it and hate to share it with others; but part of me really wants for others to get to use and appreciate it.

Things that are great about this place include a lush mohair sofa from Holly Hunt, a 200 pound block of rare Russian onyx that serves as a table, a fabulously comfortable 'Sleepy Hollow chair' that dates from around the civil war and has been upholstered in calf skin, and an epic horsehair and wool queen size Hastens mattress that set me back over 16 thousand dollars.

The apartment is equipped with a basic kitchen that includes a microwave, small refrigerator, and sink (it and the bath are on the 'remodel list') but no stove and the bathroom is generous for being an old building. There is a laundry room across the garden that takes quarters. If you need a proper dining room or proper kitchen, give me a shout and you will be welcome to use them down on the first floor (they are both really nice).

David lives on the ground floor of the building and loves meeting people and sharing info about Chicago. We can be as 'hands on' or as hands off' as you need to have a great trip to Chicago. You are welcome to use the ground floor and meet the other folks....the entire household is friendly and engaging (as is the cat, who likes to wander around the various rooms and meet people) so you can feel free to hang out with folks or to have privacy in your own place.

The flat is literally a 3 minute walk to the red line Addison station, which will take you downtown in around 20 minutes. There are also myriad bus options, and close connections to all of the major rail lines offered by the CTA.

The upstairs neighbor is a nice fellow who absolutely loves teeth rattling booming club music. I don't get it...but it is important to note that he and I agree that he can boom and rattle away until 10ish on weeknights and 11ish on weekends. It is nothing that is all that terrible, but you can hear the bass line of his music in the background in there. The apartment bedroom also has large windows that face out on a city street, so you get to hear happy (or unhappy) inebriated people out there and a bit of traffic noise. The great majority of people are not bothered by either of these things, but if you are expecting a whisper quiet sort of place you might want to consider other options.

The flat has a proper queen size bed in one room. The additional bed is located in a tiny sleeping closet at the other side of the apartment and has a large window and twin size mattress (with a green team memory foam mattress on it).

Règlement intérieur
Non fumeur
Ne convient pas aux animaux
Pas de fête ni de soirée
Peut ne pas convenir aux enfants (0-12 ans)

I have had great luck with very few rules. I prefer shoes off at the front door (if possible) and, since the furniture is really posh, please don't set drippy cups or hot things down on the furniture.

Please feel free to open windows; in particular in the winter it can get roasting hot, so a cracked window for fresh air will be helpful.

There is a remarkably dusty back porch that you are welcome to smoke on, but don't leave your cigarette butts out there.

The rule of thumb is to treat the house like you paid for it all and really enjoy your time here.

Oh, and please don't sleep on my couch. That is a weird personal pet peeve :-)

In a nutshell, I am a fun 30s fellow who lives in Chicago and does high end interior design work.

I have always been interested in showing hospitality to others. Before airbnb this was mostly done by inviting friends and others over to my home for dinner or cocktails....but I find it equally rewarding to be able to host a traveler and know that my home with influence their trip for the better.

As I am getting older I have decided that I really want to travel and see more of the world...but limited finances (coupled with my refusal to sit int he back of planes) as well as a desire to really get to see how people live and just not how tourists are treated makes this a great option for me!

I have quite a few different interests, but I am very into anything design related (architecture, shops, urban life) and am an avid collector of mid century furnishings and love modern art from around 1910 to 1960. I am happy to have one black cat (I like cat's but one is just enough to keep it interesting) and love to entertain friends often. I am also a sucker for British TV, and you will often find BBC America in the background.

I was lucky enough to have the New York Times recently devote two entire pages to me in their home section, making me sound much more interesting in print as compared with in reality and publishing some lovely pictures of my life.

Oh, and my favorite color is that of a wet seal.....greenish gray and shiny!
