Description

OK, you won't sleep in the coop, but this barn space allows you to sleep just next door to get the full country experience. There is a simple (toilet and sink) bathroom, and a heated open air shower just outside inside a garden . This shower may be shared with campers. This rental is situated in the barn right behind our main house but the views are oriented away so we don't look at each other. It seems more private that way. This barn is still under renovation and we continue to chip away at it slowly. We have just put in a brand-new pine floor and the place feels clean and new. It does not have a kitchen or upstairs (yet) but may someday. If you read through the reviews you'll see mention of the many iterations. It has worked already as an easy, separate getaway space for the not-so-picky. Now it is a bit fancier. Every year it gets a bit better.

This is a good rental for couples and could accommodate even more if you were willing to sleep on the other couch or floor. Since it is outside of the main house, you will not be directly sharing any space with us and can choose to keep mostly to yourselves.

The chickens live right next door, so yes you will likely hear the chickens in the morning. That is part of the charm. We have 10 free-ranging hens and two (surprise) roosters (named Uncle Abby and Foghorn). If you would like to be a part of the feeding experience, please let us know.

Upstairs still houses or private storage.

Currently there is no key to the outer door. We haven't much use for one.

This is a three season rental. There is no heat out there.

This could be a great location for outdoor enthusiasts like hikers, bikers, kayakers, Wanderlust attendees, and other low-maintenance but private types of people. It is NOT a good location for high maintenance types who really want the amenities of a hotel. This is a country rental and comes complete with quirks and creaks. We like it that way.

You'll have sole access to the barn while you are here. There is an outdoor shower just outside (which we or campers may also use) and a working toilet within the barn space. Please feel free to roam about the premises. We have about 50 acres of trails and wooded walks. The upstairs is private storage. It is not locked but we'd prefer it if you didn't go up there.

Sometimes a lot, sometimes very little. This depends on the guest.

Very rural landscape with great views

No public transportation available

Due to the chickens, we regret to say, "no dogs." This is terrible for us too because we love dogs.

NO DOGS AND NO SMOKING!!! At the risk of sounding harsh, we will definitely add a charge to the bill if we find evidence of anyone having smoked in our buildings. We just really, really, really hate smoking and the smell of cigarettes. In truth, aside from the smoking, we are pretty laid back but we are not interested in hosting raucous party goers (anymore). You can spread out a little more here than you could if you were staying in the house, but we certainly aren't expecting any parties (unless we ourselves are hosting them)!

Also, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be respectful when you drive to and from this place - that means 10 miles per hour past the little cluster of neighbors. This is a farm-y atmosphere, so high heels aren't really suitable. Think country and you'll be ok. We'll give you a fan if you get hot, give you some food if you are hungry, give you directions to the nearest and best swimming holes in the area, but we aren't a typical hotel, more of a (website hidden) we only say no to dogs because of our chickens. Horses, pigs, they would be fine.

Disclosures for the house and the barn:

Also... My husband and I built this house (or are building it). Every space in it is livable, if not extremely cozy but there are still some places with missing trim or final touches here and there. There are some aspects that are still funky. The entrance from the garage, for instance, still lacks the mudroom so there are an unromantic set of temporary stairs that lead into the house. Don't let that fool you because I think you will enjoy the pine wood floors, plaster walls, interesting artwork, and custom gardens everywhere.

We don't supply the food, but we are likely to share out of pride of our eggs and produce. Spend a half an hour helping out in the garden with us and you will win yourself a free breakfast of our making. Our house guests are welcome to use the kitchen, but please clean up after yourselves.

Typical of a Vermont house, we do not have air conditioning. We have fans if it gets hot. Rarely does it get uncomfortably hot around here, but sometimes it does.

Please try and drink our tap water rather than bringing in bottled water during our stay. It is clean, tasty, and has no plastic residue. We will lend you a water bottle if you need one.

Again, due to the country nature of our place, we would appreciate it if you removed your shoes in the house. IT helps to keep the mud and debris off of the floors! Definitely no shoes, food, or drink (other than water) in the loft.

And on that note... I recently read a review of a man who used Air BnB services. He gave a comparative description of his time spent at two rental houses. At the first, he said, that he was greeted by the "reassuring smell of bleach." At the second, and presumably the more disgusting of the two, he was astounded to see not one bug but two during his stay. This review made me realize that I have to give yet another disclaimer. In case you are that guy, I feel compelled to let you know ahead of time that we are organic gardeners and live in the country and so you are likely to see a bug or two (or three) during your stay at Evernest. We kind of like it that way. We try to keep the birds and bees outside but there is nothing sterile about this landscape. This is certainly not the city. You are similary unlikely to be reassured by the smell of bleach at our house, which we use but relatively sparingly. That being said, we do like a neat, clean house and you should be comfortable here, all things considered.

I live from Jamaica, Vermont and am a garden designer/landscape architect and my husband is a painter/ski instructor. My daughter is vivacious and has a great zest for life. We are all country folk. We like nature and wild activity, bluegrass music and contra dancing. When not working we are likely to be found climbing mountains, biking, swimming, and gardening. Our house is a house in progress. We are its architects and builders. We are doing Air BnB because we love the idea behind it. It is so simple and pure. Plus is helps us fund our constant house improvement projects.

We are not subsistence farmers by any means, but we definitely have what some are calling the modern homestead. That is we produce a lot of our food at our house. We have a huge garden and ranging chickens. We own a sugarbush from which our neighbor produces syrup. We chop our own firewood and tend our own trails. We do a lot of things for ourselves like this, This land is perfect for that sort of living.

We like all sorts of people who are relaxed and real. We will try, ourselves, to be relaxed are real around guests and hosts. What other way is there to be? We look forward to meeting you.
