Le logement

Thoreau's is located about a 55-minute drive to Bruce Peninsula National Park. This tiny cabin is perfect for experienced outdoor enthusiasts who embrace nature but also enjoy the comforts of electricity. There is no running water. Non-potable water will be provided at the back of the cabin for washing up, dish washing, putting out the campfires, etc.

Note: in the summer months, enjoy the "shower in a tree" with a solar heated shower bag. Privacy curtains are provided.

Guests are required to bring their drinking water, sleeping bag (or blankets) pillow and towel. Maximum two people.

The cabin features a coffee maker, filters, small fridge with freezer, microwave, two-element hotplate, toaster, kettle, heater, fan, radio/CD player, table, two chairs, dishes, pots, cutlery, dish towels, dish soap, etc. A futon sofa quickly transforms into a double bed.

When nature calls, a brightly-painted outhouse is steps away. There will be an odour as I use Sep-tonic to break down waste.

A fire pit with wood is provided along with two campfire chairs. A small picnic table completes the "back to nature" experience!

Safety features include a photoelectric smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, flashlight and a whistle. The closest hospital is located in Lion's Head, a 20-minute drive away. Watch for roots, rocks and stumps when walking on the property.

Free wifi is just down the road at "Katemma's," cafe, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays to Mondays. Reservations are required for their special Friday and Sunday night dinners. For quick-needed staples, By the Bay General Store in Pike Bay is also a few minutes away open seven days a week.

"The Rocks" are spectacular limestone formations about a 15 minute walk away. They are located off Julian Drive. You can swim here.

In Lion's Head, hot showers are available (seasonally) at the Marina for $5. Lion's Head also has a nice small beach. Enjoy the spectacular views. Non-potable water is free at the Lion's Head Beach Park Campground. Potable water is free at the nearby Beach Pavilion. Excellent free wifi is provided at the Lion's Head Library. Even if the library is closed, you can sit outside and enjoy the bandwidth. The Bruce Trail is accessible from two access points in Lion's Head. Parking is provided.

I live an hour away but will have everything ready for your stay. Flexible check-in allows for your traveling convenience, you can arrive at any time. Instructions regarding location of key, other information, etc. will be provided ahead of time.

The Bruce Peninsula National Park (near Tobermory) will be free to all visitors in 2017. Expect to see many people on all the hiking trails. A Parks Canada pass will be provided for your free admission into the Park, but please ensure you leave the Pass in the cabin before you depart for the next guest to enjoy.

Welcome and I hope you enjoy your stay!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Judi's cabin for the first two nights of our trip up to the Peninsula and it was exactly as described - a small (very clean) cabin in a very secluded spot about 15 minutes from Lions Head. The mini fridge, hot plate and kettle were more than enough for us to cook our meals and Judi provides all the necessary dishes as well as the water, basin, sponges and soap to wash up after. The nights were a bit cool however the heater that Judi provides was great and kept us warm and cozy in the cabin. There is also a shower bag that Judi provides - I recommend taking showers in the afternoon after the bag has been left in the sun for a good portion of the day or else you may be in store for more of a refreshing shower ! We loved being able to sit out at night and make a fire in the fire pit and roast marshmallows and cook hot dogs. Judi provides the big wood logs although I would recommend bringing your own kindling and newspapers! There is also a wonderful spot to walk down to for the sunset which we did both nights. Judi answered all questions extremely quickly and was very willing to answer any questions we had! She also left a bunch of pamphlets out for ideas of fun things to do which was great. We ate one of our meals at Katemmas diner as recommended by Judi and it was great (they also have wifi). We will for sure stay again if we are ever back in the area :) Thank you so much Judi!!!

This cozy cabin is close to an amazing limestone beach on Lake Huron and one can easily drive to hiking trails, restaurants and other tourist/travel destinations anywhere along the Peninsula.

It was quaint and cozy. It had everything you needed for a comfortable stay in a cottage setting. It was simple and clean, with a lot of great hiking destinations not too far away, which is what we we're looking for. Thanks Judi!
