À propos de ce logement

The Smokehouse is a 2-floor beautiful cottage that used to be, well, the Smokehouse! It was also used as the summer kitchen, washroom and root cellar. The upstairs is a huge beautiful living/sleeping space with a king memory foam bed, large sectional sofa, daybed, stone lined walk-in shower, full kitchen.

Le logement

Built around the turn of the century; the Smokehouse was indeed used as a smokehouse. Also a summer kitchen, root cellar and wash house. Milk was stored to cool in a trough that ran thru the kitchen. Meat was hung in what is now the bathroom. The upstairs had vents that came up thru the ceiling, allowing the smoke from the fire downstairs to smoke the meat. We have left all the original wood on the upstairs floors and walls. The railing for the banister is made from the fencing that surrounded the house many years ago.
We love this space! It's airy and open and a great place to chill, read, sleep, make food, order in, read, have a massage.....make yourselves at home!

We enjoyed our stay! Our dog was amused with the chickens and pigs, often watching them through the windows of our farmhouse. The location is convenient and Lisa and her husband were excellent hosts. They offered a cheese tray the day we arrived and a robust breakfast each morning. They even held a private outdoor fire with freshly made chicken chili for the guests. We would recommend a visit for a quite and relaxing weekend.

Lisa was a fantastic host. We got in late so we missed dinner (they offered to provide dinner to guests on Friday night), but Lisa saved a plate for us and had it ready when we finally arrived. They could not have been more helpful, going above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The house itself is really nice. It's an old smokehouse, but the inside is quite updated with a great bathroom and the upstairs loft is extremely nice. The king size mattress was fantastic. Breakfast was also amazing. The bacon and sausage is from their farm, and the homemade jams were fantastic.

This farm is a little piece of heaven in West Virginia -- about 2 hours outside of DC. The highlights of our trip: amazing farm to table breakfasts and dinner loving cooked and served by owners Lisa and Bob, meeting other guests and kind conversations at the community table, visiting with the resident farm life (pigs, chickens, goats, and Opal the dog), lounging in their beautifully renovated smokehouse. We will definitely back in the summer with our kids!

Without doubt my favorite Airbnb trip, and we have done so many. Lisa and Bob are fantastic people, which comes across in all interactions with them, from initial contact, to meeting them and the entire experience of their hospitality. Lisa and Bob renovated their property so beautifully, each space has character and is comfortable. Being able to see the workings of their small farm is great fun. Our four-year old watched Lisa milk Pearl the goat, saw the brave sow that birthed thirteen piglets and followed the chickens and turkey around. Lisa's breakfast was a great way to start the day and used plenty of produce from the farm (Pearl's milk is made into farm cheese for instance). They also made some great recommendations and pointed us to the Trout Pond, which is a 10-minute drive from the farm. There we found a lake with a white sand beach that was perfect for our four-year old to swim at. The recreation area is close to a great general store that serves delicious nice sandwiches and sells picnic fixings and there is a gorgeous artist's coop nearby where we watched a very friendly lady weave some cotton fabric on a loom from the 1800's. Our planned trip was for three nights, and we enjoyed the first 24 hours so much. Thankfully so, as we had to cut the trip short and come back to DC for other reasons (turns out that when the universe decides that a baby is about to be born, it doesn't matter whether you had travel plans or not). Lisa was very understanding and made changes to our reservation that allowed us to high tail it back to DC to be present for our friend's new arrival. Lisa and Bob went above and beyond to be flexible. We however, are left wanting more and will definitely be back soon. Hopefully we can come back with friends as now we know there are multiple cottages and rooms on their property. And next time we'll get our city kid to help muck out the goat shed. Maybe.

What an absolutely delightful stay! Bob and Lisa’s place was a wonderful escape from the city: from the thoughtfully and eclectically decorated cottage with a remarkably comfortable bed and open-feel shower set in a stone-tiled bathroom, lazy afternoons spent reading our books next to the creek as Bob plied us with wine and a delicious spread of cheese and fruit, and the excellent farm-style breakfast, we could not have asked for anything more. Occasional piglet-spottings (too cute!) and attention to detail like the irresistible bowl of chocolates in our cottage were an added bonus. Our hosts were welcoming with a wonderful sense of humor, and were full of good tips on places to visit. At the same time, they were also very respectful of our privacy during our stay. As my mum said as we were pulling away, “Those are my kind of people.” We hope to be back for my mum’s annual pilgrimage to the US from South Africa in 2017!

Bob and Lisa were such gracious hosts who took the time to ensure we were comfortable and felt welcome. The Smokehouse and serene surroundings provided us a perfect weekend getaway. The cottage was so cozy and we loved its rustic charm. It's beautifully constructed and has so many nice touches. Our dog was even welcomed and he had the time of his life getting a taste of farm life. Breakfast was delicious. Best bacon ever. So much beauty and comfort at the Smokehouse. I highly recommend booking this place for a relaxing retreat. Through their warmth and friendliness, Lisa & Bob made use feel at home and seem to genuinely enjoy meeting new people. I'd go back!!!!

We stayed in the magical Smokehouse for the weekend and had a lovely time visiting with Bob and Lisa. The Smokehouse itself is gorgeous (doily free ;) and has everything you could need or want. The king-sized bed and pillows were super comfortable - it actually has us rethinking our own mattress and pillows! We especially loved the stone shower and the perfect little kitchen. We were able to bring our border collie mix with us, and he had a blast playing with Lisa and Bob's pup, Opal. She even showed our pup how refreshing the creek could be when she hopped in. We were the only guests on the property that particular weekend, so Bob gave us a tour of the entire property and all the rooms/places they list on Airbnb (including a sneak preview of one that is just about to open!). He is a wealth of information about the history of the property. Since this is an actual bed and breakfast and not just an Airbnb, Lisa prepared a beautiful and delicious breakfast both mornings of our stay. We don't eat meat, but the eggs came from their hens and we understand that the bacon and other meats they serve come directly from their small farm. They are truly farm to table. Lisa also prepared dinner for us the first evening we arrived. Lisa is a really wonderful cook, and we are anxious to book our next stay...just to get some more Eggplant Parmesan! The Inn was only a 2.5 hour drive from DC and only 4 miles from great hiking. Lost River State Park has horses for riding the trails, or you can just use your feet. We also drove about 20-30 minutes into Wardensville to do a little local shopping and grab some lunch. There's plenty to do in this area to keep you busy, or you can easily spend your stay just relaxing in the Smokehouse. Enjoy!

With my soon-to-be-husband Bob Osterhoudt I can be all things I want to be. In addition to the farm & Inn, I am also a Nationally registered Paramedic working full-time for Hardy County. Bob has done all the restoration of the house and is the ultimate handyman; there is nothing he can't do. I also am an artist, a mother to 2 grown girls and a loyal friend to many.
