Description

BR w/ double bed, and twin sofabed in LR, private bath, located adjacent to Saguaro National Park West. Artists, birdwatchers, hikers, and equestrian's love staying at the China Cabinet Ranch. Here, you are IN the desert. I have natural landscape on 5 acres, which means lots of cactus. You will probably hear coyotes at night, and need to drive on a dirt road for 1/4 mile. I have 2 friendly dogs who are in and out of the house; your dog would be considered with phone call/prior approval.

Escape the city and relax in a hammock stargazing at the base of Panther Peak. Enjoy my modern manufactured home with washer/dryer and full kitchen privileges. The last 2/10ths of a mile is dirt road, but if you want quiet, this is the place. I'm just 15 minutes from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Old Tucson Studios, located west of the Tucson Mountains where there are great hiking, equestrian, and mountain biking trails right from the house. There are no street lights to detract from the gorgeous sunsets and stargazing. Your host is a certified riding instructor with who can arrange for a private trail rides. Equestrians are invited to bring their own horse(s) to explore the adjacent Saguaro National Park (West) right from my place as a guide or show you other places to haul to for incredible rides in S. Arizona. Nature lovers, travelers, birdwatchers, artists, equestrians, and people that just want to relax find my place restful and inspiring.

You have access to the whole house except my bedroom/bath and office. You may use my washer/dryer. Please contact me 24 hours ahead with your estimated time of arrival; I like to orient people to the area to help you maximize your trip, depending on when you arrive. You MUST call at least 24 hours prior to arrival specific directions. GPS WILL GET YOU LOST!!

I enjoy talking and orienting guests and am a Certified Tucson Ambassador with lots of tips as to where to go, distances, etc. Sometimes guests even accompany me to events, live local music or dancing, or want to know about Tucson's many trails or other places within a day's drive like Tombstone, Nogales (Mexico...bring a passport!), Tubac, or Bisbee. After living here for 25+ years, I've got lots of ideas, so feel free to ask for recommendations. If you're not much of a talker, that's fine too!

If you're like me, you'll love that when people drive by, they wave, and enjoy the distant coyotes serenading at night. This neighborhood is on the outskirts, but there are 2 gas stations, a Subway (sandwiches), Eegees, a bar and two restaurants in the vicinity. Driving into town through Saguaro National Park (big cactus with "arms" everywhere!), you will find everything you need: all kinds of steak houses, Mexican restaurants, shopping areas, galleries, and parks. The Foothills Mall is on Ina maybe 25 minutes from home with a movie theater. There is a Fry's Food and Drug, Walgreens, and a public library with free wifi 15 minutes away.

You must have your own vehicle since there are no buses out here. The closest car rentals are near Ina Rd. and I-10 (or the airport).

Everything you need is within a 20 minute drive. GPS DOES NOT GIVE ACCURATE DIRECTIONS SO PLEASE USE THE LINK I TEXT YOU PRIOR TO ARRIVAL. My 2 dogs (a medium sized and a tiny terrier) are indoor/outdoor, so please keep your room door closed. I recommend closed-toed shoes, sneakers, or boots for walking around the China Cabinet Ranch. Drink lots of water even in the winter as dehydration can occur (I am Wilderness First Aid and CPR trained). Sunblock and a hat are always a good idea. Be snake smart (if you see one, give it plenty of room, and never put your hands or feet where you can't see. Please do not enter the horse corrals or feed the horses unless I am with you.

Laura was very welcoming to my daughter and me. We drove in from California with our horse in tow and were grateful for a safe, clean facility to turn our horse out and sleep for the night. Our horse was happy to have room to move around after hours in a trailer and Laura had a bucket of water waiting for us when we got there. Great way to go if looking for somewhere to rest with your animal nearby!

I had such a great time at Laura's! It was just what I was hoping for- an authentic desert experience complete with distant coyote howls at night, owls hooting, and wonderful night sky star viewing on her back deck- no light pollution here! Laura's home is a true ranch, like a little "Ponderosa" from the old TV show Bonanza. It's delightfully decorated in "cowgirl" fashion- just as you'd expect from someone who is an authentic working wrangler. Laura herself is an absolute delight to meet & talk with. She welcomed me into her home & showed me around some of her property, where I got to see the horse paddock & meet her beautiful Palomino horse Sam. I loved to walk back & visit him each day & give him apples & carrots. Two sweet & friendly dogs live there- Annie & little Munchkin. My room & private bathroom were clean, the bed comfortable, I loved being able to sleep with window open & hear the owls. I was able to keep items in the refrigerator & make my morning smoothies. Do note- there is no wifi unless you bring your own- as stated in the listing. My goal was to unplug, so this worked fine for me & if need be, you can go to one of the Internet cafe's 10-15 min away. Laura was working each day I was there, but always available for questions. Had a wonderful time, would definitely come back! I recommend staying here for anyone looking for a true authentic experience.

If you want desert quiet & beauty, Laura's place is ideal. Her property borders state trust land and Saguaro Nat'l Monument is a short drive away. Great hiking! Laura gave me room in her fridge and full use of her kitchen. I fell in love with her 2 dogs. In fact, Munch accompanied me on two bikes. Daytime is filled with birds calling. At night, coyotes sing and owls hoot. My only concern was the TV which sits outside the rental room. Laura tried to keep the sound lower and I used my ear plugs so it was basically OK. Overall, I would highly recommend Laura's place. In fact, I found it hard to leave. Laura was friendly, her dogs are wonderful and the location is beautiful!

Laura is a wonderful host, I felt comfortable right away. the accommodations were as described; modest but totally adequate and as described. I had dinner the first night, simple yet perfectly cooked and fresh, good coffee with eggs & toast (good bread!) in the morning. I personally loved the location, as it on the edge of the Saguaro National Preserve, yet an easy ride into Tucson, through the Preserve- great way to wake up! We took a horse and mule ride through the Preserve, Laura is a fabulous companion, knowledgeable about the fauna and on intimate terms with her environment. She's also an excellent trainer for beginning riders like myself, giving clear instructions in an easygoing an humorous way, so you feel relaxed, yet in control of the horse. I would recommend Laura's place to my friends, and would go again. It was a very good experience if you like low key and casual.

Laura was friendly and best of all funny. She has a great sense of humor and an adventurous spirit. The accommodations were exactly what I was looking for. Sat out on the back patio with a cup of tea, looking at the moon and stars. It was really very peaceful. I found myself wishing I'd had the time to go horseback riding. Laura offered to take me but I didn't have enough time so she let me do what I needed to get done. The visit gave me the space I needed to accomplish what I had set out to do. I didn't have to worry about my dog either. He obviously felt right at home and loved playing with her two other dogs. Had a great dinner with Laura and my favorite breakfast to boot! I had forgotten how much I love the Sonora Desert and the mountains. It was hard because I knew I was leaving soon and it would be many years if ever that I would see this area again. I can honestly say it pulled on my heartstrings a little. The desert retreat is exactly what I enjoy most about Tucson; freedom and peace. I felt comfortable I was allowed to do whatever I wanted to do - no rules, no regulations, no demands imposted. I appreciate that tremendously. Again the space I needed to feel comfortable in the way that made me feel comfortable. The first night Laura met me at the Circle K in a truck with a horse trailer. I followed behind her up the winding road then down a dirt road out to the double-trailer. I got out of the car and watched as she backed her horse out of the trailer and we walked to the corral together. She fed the horse and introduced me to both the horse and the mule then her two dogs. I was amazed as she explained that she trained horses for various purposes and also provided theraputic training for horses that needed it as well. It is pretty interesting work and hard work but above all obviously work that she really loves doing. She is completely into horses; riding them and working with them as well as working with people who share that love. She is a great photographer and takes incredibly beautiful pictures. If you want to go horseback riding in Tucson Laura is a great resource and is willing, ready and able to take you out to experience the desert on horseback and have a great time with a very experienced and knowledgeable guide. The sunsets are fantastic. The stars hang low and are bright at night and the sunrise is well worth getting up early for. I saw the largest jackrabbit I have every seen the morning I left. Although I had to say goodbye to Tucson, I certainly enjoyed my last few days at this desert retreat. Wish I had found this place earlier. Wish I had had more time...

Laura is a friendly and welcoming host. After talking with her over dinner for just a few minutes I felt as if we had known each other for years. The accommodations were exactly as described. I had initially turned down taking a horseback ride in the morning (very novice rider) but was so glad that Laura persuaded me to try it. Most awesome experience and the best way to really see Saguaro National Park! I rode her mule and was thrilled at how completely comfortable and safe I felt the entire time. If you are staying with Laura, this is a not to be missed experience! Couldn't recommend Laura and her equine companions more highly!

This is an excellent find! Laura was real helpful with maps of the area. She was very informative about the area and friendly in general. Her two dogs are friendly. She also has a horse on the property. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in viewing the Saguaro National Park - or the Tucson Premium Outlets. It's a great place for hiking, biking, mountain biking, and trail running...Or just to get away. The private room with private bath makes it a great find. The place is very clean and rural - yet a close drive to Sprout's Grocery Store and CVS/Walgreens. It's a great value and I highly recommend. Also, I saw two shooting stars from the hammock at night. Breakfast was included and bottled water as well. Great find. I'll be back when I need another retreat.

I live adjacent to the Saguaro National Park West with my two dogs and horse. A retired Spanish teacher and Certified Tucson Ambassador, I traveled extensively as a young adult, and now enjoy sharing my love of the southwest with tourists. Hablo espanol perfectamente bien. I love going to hear live music, dancing, camping, and meeting new people.
As a host, I enjoy having company, but respect your space and privacy if you prefer peace and quiet. I get up around 7 and go to bed around 11 most nights. I'm in and out of the house a lot, but can answer any questions you might have about the "Old Pueblo" or Arizona in general. If I had to pick a "life motto," it would be the Golden Rule.
