Cata Apartment
Callejon Zarragoza, #37
Interior #1
Colonia Paseo de la Presa
Guanajuato, GTO, Mexico 36000
MANAGER: Veronica (will send cell number upon booking) .
Casa de Cata is a newly built three story house that sits on a very private pasillo above Paseo de la Presa in the historical center of Guanajuato. The Cata Apartment on the lower floor, with a private entrance, is perfect for a single person or a couple who are looking for economical accommodation that includes everything you need for a stay of one week or 6 months.
We are located in the historical center of Guanajuato which follows the historical path of the Guanajuato River. The river was diverted through a mountain but the main commercial area still winds its way at the lower levels along this path. Cata is close to the Embajadores (traditional embassy area) which is now a large indoor and outdoor market area which expands considerably on the weekend. There are may public and private schools in the area so the streets can fill right up with young people in their mandatory school uniforms when school is out.
SAFETY: Guanajuato is a very safe city. It has a very conservative culture with strong family values. You may “feel” unsure at first because things are so different visually, but once you desensitize and begin absorbing the energy around you, you will never worry again.
AIRPORT: The Leon airport (BJX) is only 30 minutes away and a very easy facility to use… no long lineups! Regular taxi rates from the airport are $450 pesos. Please co-ordinate with Veronica to meet at the Hotel Luz de Luna, at the bottom of Zaragoza (see map).
You can also fly into Guadalajara or Mexico City and take a bus (Primera Plus or ETN) to the “Central” in Guanajuato, then take a 45 pesos taxi to Zaragoza.
CLIMATE: Guanajuato has a very moderate climate with daytime high temperatures ranging from 65-80 in the winter to 70-95 in the summer. April - May feel like the hottest months and are very dry. Temperatures in the winter months of November to February are typically warm during the day but can fall quite low at night because of the lower hours of sun during the day.
ALTITUDE: Guanajuato is at 6500 ft above sea level. If you take side trips to Dolores or San Miguel, you will be riding the bus at over 8,000 ft. Some people experience some altitude sickness at some point in the first few days, especially if you are coming from an ocean location. Look it up to see the symptoms, but for sure you should increase you liquids intake as you dehydrate much easier at this altitude, especially at night.
ENERGY: Callejon living is a great exercise in building awareness of your energy footprint. Electricity is supplied to the house by the city and the price escalates rapidly as you use more. Feel free to leave the outside light on if you go out so you find your way down the steps after dark, but please don't leave lights on needlessly.
NOTE: The apartment taps are a long run from the hot water heater for the house, so we have installed an electric hot water heater under the sink so you can get hot water fast at the kitchen sink. This heater is on a timer, 0-60 minutes. It only takes a few minutes to get hot water to do dishes ( try 10-15 minutes). This system prevents wasting a lot of water and time waiting for hot water to arrive from the main inline gas heater.
WATER: Purified water is supplied in bottles and you will have two when you arrive. If you need more, it is available at the callejon, to the left. Bring an empty and get a new bottle for 28 pesos.
WATER SAFTEY: The city water is not used for drinking, not because it has a high bacteria count... but because it has a high heavy metal content and is a health issue when large amounts are consumed over long periods of time. I normally use tap water to brush teeth and wash vegetables.
INTERNET: The apartment has Internet supplied by Megacable, The access name is NetGear and it is an open access point. The service is quite good at 10 megs.
The kitchen is fully equipped with sink, microwave, fridge/freezer, coffee maker. The cook top is infra-red and you can only use stainless steel pots/pans with it (supplied). Just touch the on/off button, then adjust the temperature you want. It only heats what is in the pot or pan.
Fresh linens and towels are supplied when you arrive, but after that, it is up to you. There is a washing machine and soap at the entrance to the main house. Drying is done on the clothes line to the side of the house.
This unit is part of 450-year-old city with a sewer system that, like most old cities around the world, is inadequate… paper flushed in the toilets is like cholesterol in our bodies… do not put toilet paper in the toilet. All paper should be deposited in the side paper bins and included in garbage that is taken down every couple days to the bin on La Presa in front of the store.
The plants outside the entrance, as well as inside the house, need to be watered at least once per week (better twice). If you can do this, great. Otherwise tell Martha and she will come in to water.
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD: This is a traditional family neighborhood. Smile and greet your neighbors when you meet them on the callejon. Buenos dias, until noon, buenos tardes until dark, then buenos noches.
WALKING: Bring good quality shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking on old flagstone streets and sidewalks, not exactly a flat surface. As the sidewalks are often crowded you will be stepping off and back on the sidewalk a lot so it kind of feels like your on the stepper in the gym.
BUSES: It is easy to get around town using the 5 peso city buses. “Centro” is by the historical “Mercado Hidalgo” in front of the Department store. To catch a bus downtown, go across La Presa at the bottoom of the callejon, turn to your left and go to the ice cream vender. Take any bus that says Centro. Most visiters consider the center of town “El Jardin” and it is only a 10-15 minute walk from the house.
Coming back, the buses all travel in the tunnel system under the streets and you can take any bus that says “Presa” and it will stop very close to the bottom of your callejon.
Note the difference “Central & Centro”. “Central” is the main bus station where you would catch an intercity bus. “Centro” is the main downtown transit bus station by the historical Mercado Hidalgo.
TIPS ON FOOD: When, it comes to street food, you can eat where everybody else is eating. The local bread (bolillo) is excellent and makes a great sandwich (torta) that is a meal in itself for 15 pesos. In the Embajadores market there are a number of outdoor cookeries that serve wonderful gordidas and quesadillas of many types and make sure you try the Tacos Vapor on the other side by the fountain. You can get rotisserie chicken & papas to go, Chinese fast food, very nice lamb in the indoor market area... and of coarse, tacos. In the building that sells meat, there is a little convenience store that sells the best mole. For dining out, check out trip advisor:
The MEGA :
There is a modern grocery store in the Pozulejos Mall that is not too far. I normally walk through the traffic tunnel (turn left at bottom of callejon, then left again at the first street where cars stream out of the tunnel) and if I have a lot to carry, take a taxi home. The tunnel can be a little dark and sometimes there is not enough air movement to move the fumes out... but you don't have to worry about it being safe. It is equivalent to about 5 blocks of walking.
Hotel Embajadores: closest place to dine, at the top end of Embajadores. It has a nice inner courtyard and reasonable prices. Truco7 just off the Jardin, good atmosphere, food (try the mole) and value. Ophelias next door to Truco is excellent as is the Indian restaurant on the other side. Most places in Plaza San Fernando are good. Two very nice restaurants just off Plaza Barantillo, Abue (up the street to the left of the store) and a tapas place (up the street to the right of the store.
Also, check out this site for the latest: (URL HIDDEN) or check out Trip Advisor.
If you need medical assistance, there are many options and all are very reasonably priced.
- There is a walk-in clinic at the bottom of Embajadoras beside the farmacia (Consultorio Medico) You need some spanish for this.
- There is a red cross emergency center (Cruz Roja) by the Commerical Mexicana. Very reasonable.
- There is a Private hospital / emergency service at the top end of La Presa which is very good. Flag a taxi and say... hospital, emergencia, La Presa.
- There are many dentists in town and you can get work done very quickly.
- Quiet between 11:00 pm and 9:00 am. Please don't blow the speakers in the TV.
- Absolutely no smoking in the house.
- Don't use the cooktop and the hot water heater at the same time.
- Try to leave the cupboards stocked at least to the level you found them. If there was coffee when you arrived, leave some coffee.
- I love my plants... take care of them.
- Let me or Martha know if there are any problems.
- Arrange for Veronica to meet you when you leave so you can hand in keys.
- We are not responsible for anything you leave behind so check twice.
- All perishables from the fridge removed/discarded.
- All garbage & toilet paper taken to the dumpster to the bottom of the callejon.

Cathy and I hope you had a great stay and enjoyed the city and people of Guanajuato.

Really good little apartment, all the essentials for a nice stay in Guanajuato. The stairs up are a good workout but not too bad, and they ensure the apartment is private, safe and well away from the traffic. Such a peaceful spot. Was difficult when we arrived, because the lady that looks after the apartment doesn't speak English, and we don't speak Spanish, something we wish we were prepared for as we were very tired from travelling. Host (Robert) came by after 3 weeks and introduced himself and did some maintenance. Location is great, 10-15 minutes from Guanajuato centre and there is a convenience store across the road from the apartment with all the essentials. Uber drivers find the location easy, which is important, and the wifi is REALLY good. Bed is comfortable, shower has good pressure and hot water is really good.

I stayed at Robert's place for two weeks and it was great for me. The wifi worked pretty well, as I needed it to work from my computer. It's close to many restaurants and other sights. The stairs to get to the apartment are KILLER so you should be in decent health if you stay here.

The Cata Bachelor Suite was absolutely perfect for my month stay. The apartment itself was just as described and maybe even a little bit nicer than the pictures make it look. I work online so fast Wifi is important to me and it was fast (18 down/6 up) and reliable. The kitchen was small but well stocked. There's only one electric burner but it was all I needed. The neighborhood is a little bit above town which means less noise and a more local feel. All of the neighbors were very friendly. I will say that if you are a little out of shape trips into town and especially up the steps of the callejon could be difficult. I'm in much better shape after my stay! Lastly, Robert was a great host. He was always available for questions but otherwise left me pretty much to my own devices which was appreciated. I would highly recommend the Bachelor Suite, especially for longer stays.

The Cata Bachelor apartment is in a very safe part of Gto, around a 20 minute walk from the main Jardín. There are also local buses that bring you to the downtown area, but walking is usually faster. The apartment is cozy, comfortable and quiet with good cooking amenities and a comfortable bed. Beautiful artisan pieces of art and hand painted tiles throughout the apt. Verónica the manager met me at the nearby hotel Luz de luna and accompanied me to the apt. where she gave me a basic orientation of the apt.
