Description

Le logement

Built in 1916, this nice, rustic home is located on Detroit's "Lower East Side" near Grosse Pointe and less than 1 block from the water. Big trees dot this street with river access & great parks 1 minute walk away. Our block is part of the famous "copper canyon" and is known as one of Detroit's safest areas where lots of police officers live.

We are conveniently located only 5.5 miles to downtown (12-15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bike). Off-street parking is available in the driveway.

Guests will also have access to a washer / dryer in our other house located on the same block.

OUR CONTINUING RENOVATION WORK
We have recently brought this house online and still have some occasional renovation work to complete. If you decide to book this room, the bedroom will be undisturbed but we will be working (on occasion) to upgrade some of the common areas including the shared bathroom, shared kitchen and the upstairs bathroom (which is currently out of service). Renovation work will be done during normal working hours and we will do our best to make sure everyone has a pleasant stay even though we will be doing some occasional work on the place.

Accès des voyageurs

Guests have a fully-furnished private room with personal fridge, microwave & coffee maker with fresh ground coffee beans. Shared fully-equipped kitchen is available at all times. Shared downstairs bathroom has a shower.

Échanges avec les voyageurs

My wife and I currently split our time between this house and our other house on the same block so there is a good chance you'll get to meet us. We're both mid-30s, open minded, well-traveled, eclectic tech people. We enjoy traveling, cooking, food & wine, music, conversation, etc. We also love to meet new people and learn about cultures and cuisines from around the world.

Le quartier

LOCATION:
The home is conveniently located 5.5 miles east of downtown Detroit (12-15 minutes by car or 30 minutes by bike).

"Jefferson Chalmers" (formerly Fairview) is a historic river-front neighborhood located along Detroit's "Lower East Side" and south-west of Grosse Pointe Farms.

WHY IS THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IMPORTANT?
It was literally the birthplace of the automotive industry and marked the changeover from an agrarian horse-driven society to the modern industrial based urban world.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s this neighborhood was home to 3 of the region's most famous horse racing tracks. In 1901 the Detroit Driving Club held the first automobile race which featured the young Henry Ford who was the only man willing to race against the formidable Alexander Winton (a leading auto manufacturer). After a spectacular upset, Henry Ford won the race and with this demonstration, seeded the founding of the modern Ford Motor Company.

Between the years 1911 and 1919, Chalmers motorcars operated the world's first automotive test track here. Chalmers Street (named after the company) and East Jefferson Avenue intersect, and as such the neighborhood became known as "Jefferson Chalmers".

Our home is located along the actual route that Henry Ford took during his famous race in 1901 (historic maps available). We are less than 1 block from the famous canals that once served as "bootleggers alley" during prohibition where rum and other illegal substances were quietly smuggled in from Canadian suppliers right across the river. We are also within 1-2 blocks of several large beautiful parks such as Alfred Brush Ford Park and Riverfront-Lakewood Park.

Nearby you will find world-class fishing (musky), boat launch facilities, and many nice neighbors.

WHAT BROUGHT US HERE
After driving through Detroit in 2013 we fell in love with the city and its people so we decided to move here. Since 2013 we have been busy saving old houses, removing them from the "demo list" and helping to bring them back to life. We scouted literally every neighborhood in Detroit when we first arrived and we chose this particular neighborhood (Jefferson Chalmers) because of its rich history, great neighbors, and its outstanding natural resources. This neighborhood is not the closest to downtown Detroit (12-15 minutes by car) but our convenient river access, proximity to nearby parks, and overall friendly and safe vibe makes this our favorite neighborhood in Detroit and we hope you will like it here too!

Very nice hosts and easy to access. But the house is still being renovated, hence the budget price. We enjoyed the park and nearness to coffee shops, Grosse Pointe businesses, Downtown Detroit.

We're enjoying our stay here and are extending it until we can get back on our sailboat. The house is clean and warm and our hosts are easy to contact. We love the neighborhood with its canals and parks.

Though we did not meet Alex and Jenny were very friendly, accessible and helpful by email. The neighborhood is beautiful and a relatively easy drive to downtown. The house is a work in progress. Value for money.

Hi, Alex & Jenny here! We’re a fun-loving couple with a passion for food & wine, travel, exploration, music and a whole lot more. Originally from California (Alex) and Hong Kong (Jenny), our relationship has spanned the globe and in 2013 we moved to Detroit after falling in love with the city and its amazing people, beautiful architecture and vibrant history. We’re currently renovating homes in one of Detroit's best neighborhoods (Jefferson Chalmers) and AirBNB has been a great platform to help us fund our continuing renovation work.

Being travelers ourselves we love to visit new places, meet friendly and fascinating people, and experience cultures and cuisines from around the world :)
