Description

"The Swallow's Nest" – A unique and thoughtfully renovated stone shed which accommodates up to two people and offers a completely peaceful and relaxing break in the hills of Donegal. Private entrance and secluded location.

“The best place to sleep in Donegal." Eli Gothill

The Swallow's Nest

So named after the swallows which nested here year upon year until renovation work started in October 2014, this compact and tastefully renovated accommodation started life as a humble cow byre. It is approximately 200 years old, and stands apart from the main cottage with its own private driveway, entrance and deck. It overlooks a grassy meadow dotted with sheep.

The unit consists of one central living space with kitchen area, simple furniture and a bathroom. The king size bed is up on a sleeping mezzanine which affords spectacular views over the meadow and hills beyond.
Heating is from a wood-burning stove with small portable radiant heater for occasional use. The kitchen comprises a sink, gas hob, small electric oven and fridge.

The Swallow's Nest is essentially for couples and offers a truly romantic and peaceful retreat - somewhere where you can literally ‘shed your life' and relax.
It is unsuitable for children and infants because of several safety concerns, such as the height of the mezzanine.

It comes with all linen, towels, basic toiletries, freshly baked scones and some cooking essentials. The basket of scones, butter and jam are a welcome gift and are not supplied on a daily basis, unless requested and for a small extra charge. A towel refresh/drying service is offered for those guests staying longer than a few days.

The shed has its own driveway and entrance. Parking is solely for guest's use. The meadow in front of the shed is also for guests, but the cottage garden is reserved for the owner. There is an outdoor wooden deck, folding table and two chairs with a barbecue which is also part of the accomodation.

I live in a secluded and private location with complete tranquility, yet am surrounded by very caring and helpful neighbours. This sort of sums up Donegal : peace where you want it and help when needed. Add to this the stunning coast line and mountains, walking opportunities and great wealth of traditional music, the pubs and their people and you have a place I call home. - a little slice of heaven.

Public transport in the immediate area is a little limited. Buses from Dublin and Dublin airport are very regular, but most go as far as Donegal Town which is 35km from Glenties. I occasionally give lifts to people who have come without a car, but most come here by car.

There is a possibility of using the washing machine in the main house, for a small additional charge.

There are two friendly cats in the main house and garden.

Bref, on a adoré.

Lovely little cottage that will allow you to escape from a busy life. Allaye has prepared a perfect 1 day guide for SW Donegal, which we enjoyed exploring. Would highly recommend.

This place is perfect for a quiet countryside getaway. The cottage is down a small country road, mostly surrounded by sheep and beautiful landscape, but a very short drive to a few towns with pubs and shops. Allaye is a wonderful host, very attentive to any thing we needed, and she had the place set up with almost anything we thought to need!

This cottage is something beyond normal. It´s so lovely, beautiful decorated and cozy. To relax, get a way and calm down its the perfect place to be. I was completely blown away by it. Allaye gave us very good tips what to see and do and the scones tasted fantastic. I would recommend everybody to stay in her cottage. You don't want to miss it!
