Our home is very peaceful, very quiet, totally private, and romantic. The view is spectacular! Wildlife viewing is incredible, and also a daily occurence. Located between Manzanillo and Santa Teresa, on the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica, we are close to beaches (4km), world class surfing spots (6km), and undisturbed nature. Santa Teresa is 10 km south, and the area to the north (4km) is Costa Rica's newest Wildlife Rufuge - The Caletas-Ario National Wildlife Refuge - home to nesting sea turtles, an expansive estuary ecosystem, and incredible sunset beach walks.
Check out the photos of our place, with new improvements for this season!
We have recently built a new terrace, wood fired oven, and child safe hidden porch… For 2017 we have added new custom hardwood furniture to the bedroom porch, updated the upholstery and bedding, continued expanding the gardens, and increased our solar power array by 30%.
There is an expanded network of private nature trails that lead throughout this functioning flower farm and botanical garden. It is a nature lovers paradise! A great place to come, disconnect, and truly relax! Wildlife viewing is spectacular, and an early morning walk around the farm will be well rewarded.
Our beautiful second home is a naturally flowing, round, open air structure that has an attached enclosed bedroom, with sliding windows and screens and it's own porch. The design features an incredible large sweeping view of rugged mountains and coastline, which has been tastefully framed with natural teak wood logs, a vaulted ceiling, and cool tile floors. Here the sounds of distant breaking waves put you to sleep at night, while hummingbirds and incredible views greet you in the morning!
The round natural building is referred to as "The Rancho". It is built exclusively from beautiful, local teak wood. The Rancho has an open living space with a comfortable seating area, breezy hammock, a well finished kitchen, a small bathroom, and second open air bedroom.
The kitchen has a smoked glass, 3 burner gas stovetop, poured natural curve concrete counter tops, and a two basin stainless steel sink.
Within the rancho is an enclosed bathroom, with a modern flush toilet and small hand sink. There is an outdoor shower located around the corner of the tiled sun patio, tucked into a lush tropical garden.
There are extensive flowers, abundant birds and wildlife, as well as Mangos, Bananas, Passion Fruit, Breadfruit, Avocados, and Ylang Ylang growing in abundance throughout the property. Private nature trails provide an easy opportunity for wildlife viewing and learning about the local flora and fauna.
This place is remote! You will need a 4x4 rental car with good clearance, or a locally available quad (ATV). We can recommend companies to work with.
There are solar panels and a battery bank to power 12V lights, radio, and pressurized water. There are a couple of 110v outlets for laptops, and other small items. Local cell service signal is usually very good here.
WiFi Internet is via cellular sim card - email us for details.
The closest beach "Playa Manzanillo" is 4 km away, and nearly deserted, stretching to the horizon in both directions. The northern reaches of this beach encompass Costa Rica's newest wildlife refuge, The Caletas Ario WIldlife Refuge, home to (among other things) nesting endangered "leatherback" sea turtles. The southern reaches of this beach are a series of tide pools, rocky headlands, and protected coves. Epic sunsets and beach walks are the daily norm here.
The strikingly beautiful beach of Playa Hermosa is 8 km. This area is the closest popular surfing beach, and has recently experienced much fame and publicity as one of the world's top beaches, and as home to a handful of supermodels and movie stars. The waves at Hermosa can be friendly and fun, and it is a great spot to learn to surf.
Santa Teresa is firmly planted on the tourist map of Costa Rica, with its many restaurants, spas, luxury hotels, yoga centers, and international travel scene (15km). This area can offer absolute world class surf, and is known for fast, powerful, hollow beach break.
For adventurous, expert surfers, there are many unknown, un-surfed, un-mapped, un-publicized breaks in the area. Keep it that way. Seriously!
The "dry" season is from Dec - May, and you are nearly guaranteed sunny dry conditions in this time. It occasionally rains, but this is quite rare during the dry season.
June - Nov is the "green" season, and is the time when there is a mix of rain and sun on the pacific coast, although many sunny days and fabulous weather do exist.
From San Jose - 6 hours
From Liberia - 4 hours
From Tambor - 1 hour

Most of our interaction with guest is via email. Our home is blissfully peaceful, quiet, private, and romantic.
We only rent our home when we are not staying there, usually we are back in the U.S. or Denmark at the time. There is a caretaker who will be there to give you the keys and show you in. He speaks spanish only.
Our "Neighborhood", known to locals as "La Palmita" is a private secluded mountain top that is hidden in the jungle, a close distance to popular tourist areas and world famous beaches. The surrounding area is agricultural land with a mix of jungle, pasture, and roaming cows. The nearest neighbors are pure farmers, living off of the land, producing milk, and cheese, and raising animals.
You'll need to rent a 4x4 car with good clearance to enjoy this area.
You can also locally rent a "quad" or ATV. We can recommend a company with competitive prices and a reputable service.
We'd like to encourage you to get in touch and ask any questions you'd like. Our place can be an amazing perfect vacation for the right people looking for the right experience. Independent, adventurous travelers, who appreciate nature and simple living will absolutely be in love.
If your looking for a 5 star resort style place, and a front desk to call when you see some ants or a spider, this likely won't be for you.

We ask that our home be treated as it was your own. Please sweep the walkways and patios daily while you are here, for your own pleasure more than anything!
Please be sure to keep the kitchen extra clean to avoid any unwanted wildlife visitors!
We are a married couple, with a small baby girl, Nova. We met in Costa Rica and fell in love while spending our winters here at this house. For many years we have been slowly improving the property, adding a new bedroom, and making all of the little touches that make a place like home.
Walt has been an avid surfer, globetrotter, and organic farmer, based in VT, USA for over 15 years. He has a successful farm (Mountain Flower Farm) and has been spending winters in Costa Rica since 2006.
Katrine is from Copenhagen, Denmark, and came to Costa Rica in 2010 to write her master's thesis in psychology while living on the beach.
It is her touch, eye for design, and "modern" living requirements that elevated Walt beyond sleeping in his tent under the Rancho roof for months on end...
