Mark made us feel very welcome; he had a bottle of wine chilling in the fridge for us and coffeecake and fresh flowers on the kitchen table for us, and fresh flowers in our room. He is an accomplished and experienced host. His international student, Roman, was also very friendly. The house is indeed in a beautiful setting, and the room and the facilities are as described... "rustic". As much kindness as Mark showed us, I do need to say that I did not feel entirely comfortable at his house. Despite being a nature lover, I was not able to enjoy the beauty of the lake because the house did not feel peaceful to me, despite the fact that Roman and Mark were completely respectful, kind and polite, offering to make bonfires for us, and socialize with us. My sister and I were not particularly interested in socializing, and in such a small house and with such a small yard, that meant if we wanted privacy we needed to be in our room. The word "rustic" has romantic connotations, but to be realistic, be prepared for old carpeting, creaky bunk beds and a leaking kitchen sink drain in addition to the peaceful sunrises with mist rising off the water and loons diving in the lake. Also note that the bathroom is on the ground floor and shared with both Mark and Roman, and the bed room is on the second floor, not very convenient for middle of the night bathroom trips.

Mark was a fantastic host. He went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable even offering to make us a bar b que and offering us the full run of whatever he had in the refrigerator. He knows the area extremely well and also offered to take us around. The room was spacious and with 3 comfortable beds. The location is spectacular, right at the lakefront, and very easy to get to. East Pond is pristine and In the morning, I took the kayak out onto the lake and enjoyed a peaceful paddle. At night, I heard loons. If you are looking for a rustic lake get away, this is the place.

I am on the board of a few non-profits. My favorite is the Waterville Area, Kotlas Russia area Sister City Connection. Over the past 15 years, I have hosted 60 students or more;- mostly for free, many from Russia, or Ukraine. I currently have two students in my house. Roman from Ukraine and Maksim "Max" from Russia. They are quite students and study at local colleges. When international students arrive I use the 50 inch 4k Apple Smart TV to teach them Conversational English. It is fun to teach English by Karaoke and different learning language games. When I am not doing airbnb, I am also a long-time elected official "Councilor" for the town of Oakland. I do have a very nice foster son. I can answer most questions about the area. I am blessed to be neighbors with the nation's best summer camp;- Camp Manitou for Boys. Also a movie star and her director husband vacation about a 10 minute walk from my house. East Lake is the first of the Belgrade Lakes. Oakland is the gateway to the Belgrades.
