Karaka is a 2 bedroom self-contained cottage situated on the shore of the beautiful tidal Waimea Inlet.
The stylishly renovated 1950’s apple picker's cottage sleeps 4 people. It has an open-plan living space with large windows, wonderful views, and a fully-equipped kitchen. The master bedroom has a king size bed, the second bedroom has two single beds. The bathroom has a large tiled shower, and opens to a deck with an outdoor bath. The bath is beautiful in the morning with the sun streaming through the trees, amazing on a clear night looking at the stars.

There are places to sit outside and catch the sunshine whatever time of day. A large covered verandah and a private garden lead to the estuary shore.
The cottage is perfectly equipped for the simple pleasures of a bach holiday with good books, board games, barbecue, hammock, and endless views to gaze at. On a full tide you can explore the quiet inlet by kayak or paddle board. The tide comes in and out twice a day so the water and views are constantly changing. The size of the tides also vary according to the moon and there are timetables in the cottages for the best times to kayak and paddle board.

The cottage has a woodburner and is very cosy in winter. There is good cellphone coverage and free Wifi.

We had two nights in this beautiful cottage. Loved the setting and views from the windows and deck. Very peaceful and restful. Even though it was mid winter and the rest of the country was hit by bad weather the cottage was lovely and warm and the weather perfect!

Elspeth's cabin (one of three) is very secluded in a small vineyard perhaps 15 min from the small village of Mapua. The place is a really pleasant place to stay - comfortable and very pleasantly designed. We enjoyed having a fire in the wood stove. Close to fine wineries and not too far from Abu Tasman. Although the pictures suggest it's a place surrounded by water, in fact there was water only briefly each day when the tide was at its highest - otherwise there were vast mud flats.

Hi Eric Thank you for your helpful feedback. We have updated our description to make it more clear that the cottages are situated on the shore of a tidal inlet and not the open sea, and have also added more photos of the views from the peninsula at low tide. The tide comes in and out twice a day so the water and views are constantly changing. The size of the tides also vary according to the phase of the moon and there are timetables and other information for the best times to kayak and paddle board in the cottage information folders. Sorry we didn’t get to meet you while you were here, we were on holiday last week. Hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday in NZ, best regards, Elspeth (to clarify the location for future guests, Karaka is 3.7km to Mapua village, 5 minutes by car and 10 to 15 minutes if cycling.)

Großartige "Hütte". Geniale Lage direkt am See. Wir bekamen noch frisches Obst und Gemüse. Unglaublich lecker. Absolute Empfehlung!

The house was exactly as pictured on the website and it was absolutely beautiful! We had all that we needed for a relaxing stay including the use of some kayaks. It was also a great place for bird watching.

We had an excellent stay in the cottage. It really has everything you can wish for - a well-equiped kitchen, several spots where you can relax outdoors, wifi, the outdoor bathtub and superb location for exploring the surrounding area. We definitely recommend this place!

We were greeted by a friendly hand-written/drawn map to a gorgeous little cottage at the lake side. It was tastefully and wonderfully decorated and the views from every room were stunning! The cottage was quiet and peaceful and we were delighted to wake to the various songs of the birds that came through the yard. Though we werenʻt able to take advantage of the outdoor tub (it was too cold for us Hawai`i people!), it would have been a great experience to do so (and perhaps something to look forward to if we return in summer). The only thing that saddened us about our stay was the firewood and kindling available to make a fire. We ended up having to purchase fire starter and kindling logs from the local store as both kindling bits and logs made available outside, were a bit damp and green. Luckily for us, the heater came in quite handy in keeping the place a little warm. (We had ICE on the windshield the morning we left the cottage!)

Really beautiful view and wonderfully comfortable beds! Elspeth met us late in the evening, and had a fire all started to warm the house. After a long trip from the North Island, the outdoor bath under the stars with the birds singing was perfect! We loved staying here!

We are a family of 3 living on a small organic waterfront property (2 Ha) on the Waimea Inlet near Mapua. Our place is a mixture of fruit trees, vegetable garden, chickens and a small vineyard. We love to travel, and have spent many years living overseas. We have a constant flow of people from all over the world staying here which we love.... as well as guests in the cottages we have wwoofers here most of the year (willing workers on organic farms) .
