Description

We are a Heritage listed 1857 building, containing 3 apartments and our home. This is a great old building so close to the front beach and right in the old part of the village! (The calendar will show available, until all 3 townhouses are booked.)

This is just a lovely place to stay. Our building is in the centre of the old part of the village. If you look either East or West, the view down the street hasn't really changed in 100 years! Smillie St. is the "heritage street", it is just about 100m from "Front Beach" and just a very short walk from shops, cafes and the two pubs. (and I do mean a short walk!) Each of our townhouses has a first floor bedroom with queen size bed. Ground floor has a living room with heating and pass through the old wall to a second bed / kitchen / dining and the bathroom. This is an old building and as such, is a bit quirky. We have the main bedroom upstairs which opens out onto the verandah (some have doors but others will have to pop out the window!) On a Summer afternoon, the verandah is just the place to sit or have a drink. Canvas blinds can divide the spaces off from each other on the 30m verandah. The Kitchen opens out onto the courtyard where guests can relax on the sun beds or enjoy the BBQ and table and chairs. The courtyard is bordered on the South, by the old stable buildings and as such, is thoroughly private from the streets.

All our guests may use the courtyard. The BBQ is under cover, as is the table and chairs, all under the 100 year old apple tree. We have seating, sun beds and umbrella and a large coin operated washing machine that will handle all your towels and clothes.

Jude and I live in our house at the other end of the building and are here to receive and help our guests.

Robe is an historic village nestled right on Guichen Bay. Originally, Robe was the closest port to Adelaide for the supply of fresh meat and later it shipped massive amounts of wool, direct to London. It still has a Southern Rock Lobster fishing fleet operating, who supply a vibrant export market. In the past, 16,500 Chinese miners made the trek form Robe to the Victorian gold fields and there is a good amount of history to peruse. Lately, Robe has blossomed into quite a foodie village with about 7 cafes and restaurants, 2 hotels, Robe's own coffee, beer and dairy to enjoy. The Limestone coast is spectacular. Long Beach is a drive on, park and swim, while the Western beaches are full on ocean experience.

There is an intra state coach line which makes regular stops in Robe, connecting us to Adelaide and Mt. Gambier and all ports East. Once here, you can walk or ride all the coastal pathways and around the village but most visitors come by car. Robe is the perfect base from which to day trip out to the Coonawarra and Limestone Coast vineyards, the world heritage listed, Naracoorte cave system and the other costal towns.

We have successfully operated for 5 years now and so much of that has been due to the level of respect that our guests provide for each other. We have found that everyone has enjoyed the experience of the shared courtyard and so we would expect that this should continue for all our sakes.

My wife Jude and I have returned to Robe from Adelaide to live and work. I originally worked in Melbourne and Darwin as an Architect before returning to SA to farm with my wife Jude. Jude qualified in Adelaide in Fine Art and specialises as a print maker. We now run the Robe art apartments and "Ocean Belle" for our building with a view of the ocean.
