Description

This spacious bambu home situated on a hill above the small fishing village of Don Juan beckons the sea breeze with its 16-ft ceilings, cool tile floors and beautifully handcrafted wooden Bahama shutters. Treat yourself to this slice of paradise!

This house simultaneously offers the tranquility of a natural environment and all the comforts of modern living. The grounds have been lovingly cultivated in the permaculture style, with papaya and coconut trees and other plants native to the Manabi region of Ecuador. You will wake up to birds singing outside of your windows. Open the shutters in the master bedroom and drink your morning coffee as you lay in bed enjoying a gorgeous view of the sea. You will want to have all your meals with the breeze blowing through the wide open windows. The dining table, counters, and much of the other furniture has been handcrafted by local craftsmen using natural materials from the area. During the day you can read and nap in the hammocks overlooking the beach while birds visit the gardens around you. Feel free to wander the grounds and say hello to Domingo the donkey. The house has both a modern gas stove and a traditional outdoor Manabita wood stove. There is no dishwasher, but we promise you will enjoy washing dishes as you stand at the sink looking out the window at the sea! Those interested in learning to cook local food can take a lesson with our "vecinas". If you prefer to have delicious meals prepared for you, we can arrange that as well. For more information about activities and dining options, see below ("The Neighborhood").

The main house is all yours. There is a guest house as well which you may consider renting if you are traveling with a large group. Otherwise the homeowners may be staying there.

We are nearby in the guest house. We are available to help with anything you need.

The house is on a hill overlooking a fishing village called Don Juan. All the people in the village are very friendly and eager to help.

Dining

You can buy fish directly from the fishermen by the beach. You can also get fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy products and meat from the farms nearby (we will leave the information about the farms at the house for you). There is a small market in Don Juan owned by Doña Apolonia where you can buy drinking water and snacks. Anything else you need you can get at the supermarket in Jama, 10 minutes away.

If you would like to have delicious, home-cooked meals prepared for you by local cooks, please let us know and we will arrange for it at an extra price.

Camare, a sweet hotel in town with beautiful gardens, prepares lunch and dinner. They also have a pool table, hammocks, and chairs on the beach.

We will leave information about other local restaurants in Jama, El Matal or Pedernales.

Activities

- Cooking Lessons: Alejandra can teach you how to use the traditional manabita stove so you can prepare: seafood cazuela; pan de almidon; tortillas; pizza; empanadas de verde; or anything you request.

- Fishing: you can accompany the local fishermen on their evening fishing trip.

- Volunteering at the children's library.

- Hiking: There is a protected forest nearby right on the equator line with hiking trails.

- Swimming: The beach is all yours!

Public transportation is available nearby. Jama is a 10 minute drive and Pedernales 30 minutes.

The house is isolated and safe. You will be more comfortable if you come with a car, particularly if you are not able to walk up and down the steep trail between the house and the village/beach.

The tap water is not safe for drinking. We will leave the first bottled water for you, and if you need more you can find it in Don Juan at Doña Apolonia's store.
