To help you get started, you will get a short meet up with me at the house to hand over the keys personally and to get my tips and recommendations (half an hour) for a special Lisbon experience. Want to feel at home miles from your home? Book it and get a local’s perspective.

The city’s spiritual heart captivates with its must-see sights and handsome plazas, old-school speciality shops and little ginginha bars. Built high and mighty on the rubble of the 1755 earthquake, Baixa is Lisbon’s riverfront gateway, its royal flag-bearer, its lifeblood. Trams rumble, buskers hold crowds captive and shoppers mill around old-world stores. The main drag, Rua Augusta, links the regal Praça do Comércio to Rossio, where you’ll find a neighbourly vibe in closet-sized ginginha (cherry liqueur) bars and street cafes.

TOP SIGHT # Tram 28 (with a stop just 70 meters away, turn a basic journey into a thing of beauty by hopping on one of the world’s most super streetcars);

# Elevador de Santa Justa (360-degree city view at the top of this neo-Gothic monument);

TOP SIGHT # Praça do Comércio (Lisbon’s spiritual and geographical heart with its vintage trams, grand arcades and general hustle-bustle);

# Nova Pombalina (polish off one of the famous roast-pork sandwiches);

# Fragoleto (creamy gelato);

# Museu do Design e da Moda (take a whistle-stop tour of the design world, free admission);

# Rossio (head up here at dusk to see its fountains, theatre and neo-Manueline train station light up);

# Hotel Mundial (let Lisbon’s skyline work its charms from the roof terrace of this hotel).

The whole neighbourhood is very easy-going and secure. Supermarket, shops and top restaurants are located nearby.

# Bairro Alto & Chiado (browse boutique shops, ride vintage funiculars to miradouros and hit Lisbon’s most happening bars in these central neighbourhoods) → 600 meters away by foot.

# Alfama, Castelo & Graça (discover fado, characterful backstreets and high-rise viewpoints in this trio castle-crowned neighbourhoods) → 600 meters away by foot.

# Belém (Manueline monuments, a Unesco-listed monastery and contemporary art await in this nautical-flavoured neighbourhood by the river) → 30 min away by tram 15, from Praça do Comércio.

# Parque das Nações (the riverside district shines with outdoor art, futuristic architecture and Europe’s second-biggest aquarium) → 20 min away by the bus 782, from Praça do Comércio.

# Saldanha (top-drawer museums, pristine gardens and some of Lisbon’s best restaurants lure you north to this lesser-known neighbourhood) → 20 min away by metro, get off on the stop São Sebastião on the blue line to visit Museu Calouste Gulbenkian.

# Estrela & Lapa (a world-class ancient art museum, streets with low-key and leafy charm in these neighbourhoods) → 15 min away by the bus 714, from Praça do Comércio

# Príncipe Real (an open-minded, bohemian-flavoured corner of Lisbon) → 25 min away by foot.eal (an open-minded, bohemian-flavoured corner of Lisbon) → 25 min away by foot.

The house is located close to the metro station Terreiro do Paço. The Aeroporto metro station, on the red line, opened in 2012, allowing convenient access to downtown. Change at São Sebastião (blue line) to reach Terreiro do Paço.
The metro runs frequently from 6.30 am to 1 am.

Cais do Sodré is the terminal for train services to Cascais and Estoril. → 10 min away by bus or tram
Rossio, with its beautiful neo-Manueline facade, offers frequent services to Sintra (40 min), the stupendously silly castle craziness village. → 5 min away by bus

If you’re going by car, parking is the main issue. Spaces are scarce, parking regulations are complex and pay-and-display machines are often broken. The car-park Chão do Loureiro, 300 meters away, the rate is €20 per day. On Saturday afternoon and Sunday parking is usually free.

LISBON’S HEART OF THE CITY HOME situated on the second floor of the building is suitable for up to four guests.
