Up on Woodstock's Overlook Mountain (yet only 3 miles from the center of town) sits "Byrdland," Woodstock's first LEED-certified home. Trails from the property lead to 500,000 acres of state land. Private room has full bath, queen bed, and views.
High up on Woodstock's Overlook Mountain (yet only 3 miles from the center of town) in a rustic and historic hollow, sits "Byrdland," Woodstock's first LEED-certified home, a standard in 'green' building and design. Owner/builder/host Rob Saffer helped design and build the house and can explain all that went into it, from its innovative woodstove heating system to eco-coatings made from cheese whey. The house is surrounded by 500,000 acres of the Catskill Forest Preserve with amazing trails right out the door. For additional fees, Rob will guide visitors through the forest to discover this historic Woodstock hollow, its old quarries and over mysterious 100 stone mounds, thought by archeologists to be ancient native cairns. He also leads seasonal mushroom foraging tours and snowshoeing excursions. Snowshoeing in winter, hiking in spring, mushroom foraging in the summer, leaf peeping in fall, life in Byrdland is magical.
This private room is on the second floor with its own captive, private bathroom. It has a queen-sized bed that everyone loves and a colorful, private bath with a deep tub! Views of the Hudson Valley can be seen from the bedroom in the Winter. It's flooded with sun during daytime and quiet at night.
Wifi is available throughout the house, though speeds are slow due to the rural location.
Coffee and a selection of tea will be offered in the morning.
Two cats share Byrdland with its owner so please be forewarned should you have allergies.
For more information on Byrdland, please see an article in the Woodstock Times, Decemb(PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) edition - search: "A Home Story."
Trails to magnificent Hudson Valley views as well as stone cairns are just outside the house waiting to be explored.
Please leave shoes in mudroom and wear slippers inside the house. The house is nearly 100% sustainable so we ask guests to use water and energy consciously - turn off lights, shorter showers, etc. Also, please do not use the wood stove or cooking stove without permission - it's a safety issue. Thanks and don't forget to bring slippers or something to wear inside the house.

I lived in Brooklyn for 25 years while working as a creative director and marketing executive for companies like MTV Networks, ABC/Disney, and Edelman. I made music videos and commercials, produced earth-shattering live events, consulted huge companies on how to improve their products and services, and even produced live music concerts, mostly jazz. But I never built a house, until I moved to Woodstock, a place where magic happens. About ten years ago, I moved to Woodstock, found a piece of land and was able to fulfill my lifelong dream to design and build a 'green' house. I am proud to say that the house, Byrdland, is the first LEED-certified home in Woodstock. It is one of my greatest achievements. And, I've decided to share it with you and other Air BnB clients.
I love to hike in the area, forage for mushrooms and spend countless hours in the vegetable garden or working on the landscape. I also love playing ping pong and have a table in the basement for those who are game. I love to grow food and cook it, mostly South Asian styles. And, of course, I love sharing my house with interesting, creative folks.
