If you are looking to live a true experience outside of touristic paved tracks, this is for you. Yes, Legend of Otohime is an old, authentic house. It suffered from April 2016 earthquake (bathroom not operating). But it has the taste of legendary places and allows you to live an authentic traditional Japan stay. Murakami-san has kept his child spirit and he will treat you like the most important guest. I have enjoyed our discussions around the central fire. The non operating bathroom provided a good excuse to try onsens around.

An absolutely one of a kind experience, this isn't just a place to stay by a way to experience a very traditional style of living with an amazing personality.

I was recently in the Aso area to film part of a short documentary and stayed at Murakami-san's place. It was a little strange at first, because he wasn't ready for us when we showed up. The phone didn't connect either. So the first meeting was a little awkward. But we went to dinner and once we came back it was fine. Murakami-san is a nice guy. Although, we just needed a place to stay and really were not looking for the "experience" that other travelers are looking for. It was a little pricey as well. I think the price covers him doing things like drinking tea at night and such. We just needed a place to stay. Which is maybe different than many of the travelers he gets. I will mention that he doesn't have a shower or bath due to damage from the earthquake. But it has been a year, so I would think he should have it fixed by now. Possibly a choice rather than circumstance. Anyway, if you are looking for a nice host, Murakami is it, if he is ready for you. Good luck on your travels.

We arrived very late in the evening because our bus was late, the host waited for 2 hours for us and called us a taxi because the area is very rural so that is the only way to get to his house. We went to the supermarket together and bought ingredients which he offered to use to cook dinner for us. It was very delicious. Cooking with a traditional Japanese stove was exciting and we enjoyed the traditional Japanese experience, very rare to find these days. The host is very kind and. helpful.

This is a very authentic experience, with a very warm host! Strongly recommended that you have dinner with him - it's a great experience. He has lots of stories to tell - his English may not be perfect but is certainly good enough to convey his warmth. He's a real farmer, and you'll get to eat the rice he planted (it's good). The experience forces you to slow down and appreciate life. There's a hot air balloon experience nearby if you would like it - it closes at 730am. The stillness of dawn is worth the early wake up tomorrow. This is in a village - so yes, expect bugs, midnight rooster conversations and don't forget to say hi to Tama-Chan, his adorable cat that will sit in your lap the moment you crouch near it. For those who feel creepy easily, it might not be for you. This is quite secluded, and certainly not close to the city but a short drive brings you to a clothing store, grocery shops and a laundromat.

We appreciate your understanding and support regarding "2016 the earthquake in Kumamoto".
Features here. I am not fluent, but I may be able to speak English.
So, do not worry about communication? It is!
I am always thinking about you. While you are at my house, I need to think whether you need help or not. If I were you.
I would like to have a wonderful time with you ...
I would like to keep that in mind. That way, I am convinced that you can keep on a wonderful journey.
Breakfast is free. Rice is rice that grew up in my rice field.
For dinner, you need to choose whether you want to do externally or at my house. If you choose "IRORI" at my house, I recommend you to cook using "IRORI". We will guide you to the nearest supermarket ingredients, so please buy your favorite ingredients. My house is 2-3 km from the nearest restaurant and convenience store. Nearby there is nothing.
Japanese cuisine is one of traditional Japanese culture. I have rice, miso, seasoning, fuel and so on. Let's taste the four seasons of Japan together.

I am a traditional rice farmer in Kumamoto Aso. I hosted Airb&b's guest as a host from the spring of 2016.
I was born here, I grew up, I graduated from college in Tokyo and I lived in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka. I was doing another work. I came home 8 years ago. And now I grow rice in my field.
My house was built in 1937, It is 80 years ago.
Previously it was a mid-sized farmer in this area.
Six years ago, it was reported as "Japanese landscape" of an old farmer located in local RKK-TV. Because there is a vacant room, I have registered a accommodation facility named "Legend of Princess Otohime " approved in Kumamoto Prefecture. However, shortly after launching "Airb&b" in 2016, there was an old building affected by the Kumamoto earthquake. Shower and bathtub can not be used yet.
But that is okay. There is a hot spring area here, and there is a hot spring facility with a large public bath and private bath. Please use it until construction is over. I will introduce you when there is an offer.

Due to the earthquake, the number of old houses in this area has declined. My house is unique. My house escaped from the damage of World War II, and the earthquake is also overcome. Therefore, staying at that house is very unique. You are a guest, but you can touch the lives of Japanese people directly during your stay. It is more than Japanese living in Japan.

It is the northern part of the crater in the center of Kyushu. You see a mountain of 360 degrees.
Takachiho, Kurokawa Onsen and Yufuin Onsen are also useful.
Nagasaki, Oita, Fukuoka, Kagoshima ... Of course it is the intersection of Kyushu.
Currently, in the case of JR which is the main transportation means, Kumamoto Higo Otsu is good, but Higo Otsu Aso can not pass. But you can come here. Please contact me for details.

Welcome tea (Maccha & Wagashi) will be awarded to the guest who arrived. Please touch Japanese culture.(But, I am an amateur.)
I welcome the people of LGBT, and Halal food is okay!
If you stay for 3 nights or more, you have valuable plans. Please notify me.

I welcome people interested in Japan. For example, Japan's seasonal food, animals and plants, living, kimonos, residences, events, festivals, origami etc.

You can dig bamboo in spring, hunt fireflies in the early summer, watch the leaves in autumn, and watch the snow in winter. Yes, I can enjoy the Japanese season. Also, you can see the sea of clouds according to the weather conditions of Aso.
Girls 'dolls are exhibited from February to March and boys' festival are displayed from April to May.
Hina's doll is a huge culmination of traditional Japanese art and crafts.
However, this is a plateau located at an altitude of about 500 meters. This is natural. In the summer there are mosquitoes and insects. So please do not refrain from those who do not like it.

People who visit say that everyone is unique. There are no car noises and cheers. This year is the house which going past this 80 years (built in 1317). It was what I saw just before the scenery of Japan. And you can see that you are the lives of people living in this house. The house is in front of you.
I think that the nature of Aso and the taste of this house can feel your own Japanese space and a unique luxurious experience in Japan.
Please make many good memories in Japan.
I want to see your smile.
