Hi my name is Ratna, I am the creative director of Cata Odata, an art space that dedicated for artists who lives in Bali and East Java. We serves as a gallery, studio, as well as residence. We open for anyone who love to lives with art and creativity.

Le logement

Our home called ‘Cata Odata’, it serves as a communal place to learn and play for artists and creative people especially those who resides in Bali and East Java. We run an active art gallery, a shared studio, and a residence.
Other than myself, there are 4 more persons who live permanently in Cata Odata. Those are my grandma who is a great cook for us, my partner, Kenyut who is an artist, Ajeng and Merio who are our friends and communication management team.

We live in a semi open plan house nestled in a busy village of Penestanan Kelod, 12 minutes walking-distance to Ubud city centre. Surrounded by some villas, big trees, paddy fields, small streams, and a Pura (Bali Hinduism temple) across the street. If you are lucky, witness and know the custom closer when they have ceremony in special date and occasion at the temple.

While you are staying here..
-Artists and Art Gallery Tour
As an art space, we encourage artists and any creative people from interdisciplinary practice to adapt, learn, and innovate together. Exhibition and cultural event were held every 3 months in our gallery and we arrange studio visits or art tour that you could join as well. Contact us for this itinerary details.
-Artist Workshop

-Sharing thoughts and expand your vision
In Cata Odata, we have diverse friends. Meeting with new people might happen spontaneously such as midnight chats on our dining table with a cup or two. Unplanned meeting(s) with artists, writers, photographers, other art galleries who visit our home and facilities may enrich your stay.

Our home is perfect for those who’d like to be surrounded by creativity while getting an insight of the local arts scene today that derived by thousand cultural heritages and influences of the modernity through globalization.

Accès des voyageurs

This is the area where we hold all types of more formal art events such as exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, installations, performances, etc. While, the little room next to our gallery that filled with many small artworks is called ‘Arcimisi’. This special room offers our affordable collection as well as wearable arts or craft that made by our artists friend.
The gallery is open from Monday to Saturday, at 10AM - 7PM WITA. (Currently our Cata Odata website is under maintenance. Visit our (URL HIDDEN) for reference)

2nd floor --> THE RESIDENCE (rooms, library, and kitchen)

This is the space where we live, study and rest. There are total 4 bedrooms where me and my grandma are using the main room. 2 other rooms open for anyone who’d like to stay with us; 1 twin room and 1 queen room.
Please note that we also run an international artist residence program, so it is normal if you meet with a highly creative and quirky minds in their full-on mode while staying in Cata Odata.
We have mini library with range of genre across the art, history, and various graphic novels mostly in English and Indonesian. Feel free to ask us for recommendation and please to inform us before pick it up especially on our rare collections.
Kitchen is being shared but not during the peak time that is 9 AM to 1 PM where grandma require to use the whole kitchen to feed Cata Odata permanent residence. Please use the stove considerably for light cooking only. If you need to store your grocery, ask for a plastic container (40 x 30 x 10 cm) from us so it won’t be mixed up with others. Unfortunately, we have to stop the access of using the kitchen for those who does not meet our cleanliness standard.

3rd floor -- > ROOFTOP

We have 3 lovely dogs live in these spacious area. However, as our building is quite old, we have to limit the access to the roof top area (though it’s very airy and beautiful here)

Ground floor --> STUDIO AND LITTLE GARDEN by the stream

This is where all the artists and other creative people playing/working together. If you are inspired and want to use this space for your sudden project, please ask us about the availability. After all, no one likes to work in an overcrowded studio.

Currently we are expanding our library to a wooden room right above the studio which connected to a giant hammock. Occasionally, we use as a movie-screening room. On the hammock. Yes! However, for safety reason, this fun space is best for 5-6 adults only.

Échanges avec les voyageurs

The only area that has a total privacy is your own bedroom. You will often meet and greet with the others especially us in any area of the house. Most of the time, we will be here and are gladly to share any information regarding your stay in Bali in our capacity and capability.

Autres remarques

Keep in mind that we are in the middle of a village where all its residents must carry out their daily activities. It is not strange if sometimes you hear knocking hammers, motorbike passing by, barking dogs, howling dogs (ours are huskies), sound of gamelan from the temple, ceremonies, parades, villagers returning from paddy field, people hang our in coffee stall next door, fighting roosters competition, and even the sound of pigs being sacrificed for ceremonial purposes. All of those mentioned above alongside our artistic endeavour will become your honest cultural experience if you stay with us :)

Lovely and very special place outside of Ubud. Must love dogs - and riding a scooter, otherwise it´s a bit hard to get to the city center. We enjoyed our stay and chatting with Ratna! Thanks and see you soon!

If you want to life like a local in Ubud and feel welcomed by a family then stay at Ratnas place. It's a rather simple room but you won't miss anything. Ratna and her family are super nice people and are happy to help you with anything you need. You can also rent a scooter there. I totally recommend this place.

Our stay at Cata Odata was way to short! The gallery and house is absolutely beautiful! It was so peaceful to sleep to the sound of the river and the distant gamelan from the temple. It is lovely to drive in and out of Ubud through the beautiful road almost overtaken by jungle that leads to gallery. It feels wonderful to be surrounded by so much diverse and interested art, not to mention books and lovely conversation. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and helpful, Ratna even helped me to buy one of the paintings I fell in love with. Definitely a great place to stay longer and be inspired.. and not too far from the busy Ubud.

Ratna en kenyut Are very hospitable and friendly. During our stay Ratna's grandmother showed us how to make Saoto soup. We could also rent a motorbike of them to make a trip to Amed. Great place and people to stay with!

My stay at Cata Odata was wonderfully relaxing and extremely comfortable. The wonderful array of artwork and crafts around their home/gallery evoked a sense of being in a museum! Both Ratna and Kenyut are gracious hosts, made me feel so accepted and were quite helpful in giving out travel tips. I loved hanging out in the dining area with Ratna, Kenyut and their diverse friends, Ratna's sweet grandma, and of course their adorable dogs. My room was light, airy and spacious with the windows opening up to the surrounding mini-forest. Each night I would fall asleep to the sound of the lively stream and be bathed in moonlight. A delightful stay overall and recommend the warmth and camaraderie highly. Thank you for having me, both :)
