Description

Over 30 bookings for 2017 already!

Enjoy New York style living in this 140sqm loft apartment in a converted bank HQ building.

Located in of one of Joburg's oldest buildings, with a free, underground parking space, lightning fast internet and close to Maboneng, Braamfontein and the Sheds@1Fox, this apartment is perfect for families, groups of friends and business groups to access the coolest parts of urban Johannesburg.

It was also the subject of a Sunday Times home design feature.

Unlike many other lofts, all 3 bedrooms have doors so privacy can be maintained.

Centrally located, this 140sqm (1,300sqft) apartment is less than 10 minutes walk to the closest Citysightseeing open-top hop-on-hop-off tour bus stop, about 25 minutes Uber ride from Johannesburg airport and 10 minutes away from the Gautrain station, giving direct access to Rosebank, Sandton, Pretoria and the airport.

Reclaimed bank doors open into a small lobby that leads to one of the guest bedrooms, on one side and through to the rest of the apartment, on the other.

I designed the layout to remind me of my time living in an open planned apartment in London.
The Master bedroom has a 'removable wall' that allows it to open up onto the living space, creating the feel of a large studio/warehouse apartment.

The main guest bedroom is at opposite the end of the apartment, further enhancing the privacy when there are multiple people staying. The study has been converted into a third bedroom.

All of the windows overlooking the main street have two sets of glazing (which is unusual in South Africa), so the street noise is drastically reduced.

My favourite part of the apartment (aside from the lighting in the bedroom) is the balcony that overlooks the internal atrium of the building. As it is north facing, this provides a really bright outdoor space, but is shielded from the noise of the city center.

Guests will have private use of the entire apartment (aside from the locked storeroom) plus a single parking bay.

I travel a lot, so unlikely to be in town during your stay, however the building manager, Dylne, lives in the building and he will be available to assist with keys handover etc. and I'm just a phone call away.

Think Brooklyn New York, Downtown LA, Brixton, Shorditch or Hackney in London, 20 years ago. Jo'burg has finally broken free from the chains of its troubled past. And, lead by 'Urban cool' centers such as the CBD, Maboneng and Braamfontein, is now listed amongst the best places to visit, in the Southern Hemisphere search the Internet for recent Johannesburg articles in publications such as Rough Guide, GQ Magazine and The Guardian for a non-biased opinion).

I love that my apartment in the CBD, is right in the middle of this regeneration. Trendy markets, galleries and underground clubs and bars mix it with the banks and mining house HQs. This is the oldest part of, what is actually a very young city.

With the old bank and mining house HQ's, it was the 'Square Mile' of Southern Africa. In the 1980's and 1990's lots of the businesses started to move out to new suburbs like Sandton and central Jo'burg fell into disrepair. Then in the early 2000's the CBD urban renewal started and it's now the 'urban trendy' part of town.

Busy during weekdays and very quiet in the evenings, the CBD is not as 'manicured' as newer parts of the city, but it's certainly on that trajectory and improving by the day. I'd recommend anybody book one of the many inner-city guided walking tours to get a full appreciation of the CBD.

The CBD, alongside Maboneng and Braamfontein are urban regeneration centers of Johannesburg, where youth and arts culture prevail. Anybody looking for a suburban experience of Johannesburg would probably be more comfortable in areas like Sandton and Branston.

Commissioner Street is the oldest street, in the oldest part of Johannesburg. It's within a 9 or 10 block area that was originally modeled on neoclassical city centers. It maintains its old New York/City of London look and feel. It's thriving during the week and very quiet at the weekends.

The CBD does not have the glistening shopping malls and high electric fencing of the Northern suburbs. It's has maintained it's more traditional city centre layout, with wide sidewalks, street cafes and is bathed in a real creative energy. Whilst the cafes and art galleries have always been around, the growth of the weekend farmers/flea markets, in the surrounding suburbs, over the past five years, makes it a great base for weekend excursions. Neighbourgoods market (Braamfontein), Arts on Main (Maboneng) and The Sheds@1fox (Fox street) are all 5-10 minutes away.

The building itself overlooks some of Johannesburg's most historic and beautiful buildings.

Built in the 1940's by one of old Johannesburg's foremost architects, Gordon Leith, it is constructed of sandstone in the architectural style of the "Modern Movement Era", but includes many Art Deco features. It is a building preserved under the National Heritage Act, has a state of the art security system backed up by CCTV and a 24hr security guard presence.

From the airport, there are plenty of Ubers, local taxis (which need cash) or we have our favorite driver, Jacob (who also offers tours of Soweto, the Lion Park and other parts of Johannesburg), who we could connect you with.

Uber works really well within Johannesburg! Definitely recommend using it to get around locally.
The apartment is also 10 minutes away from the Guatrain station and there is a Rea-Veya (rapid bus service) stop right in from of the building, but we only ever use it to go to rugby matches.

I still have a few of my things in the Master Walk-in wardrobe. I'd appreciate those being left alone.

I have though, left plenty of hanging space, shelves and drawers for your things.

Hi, I'm Ade. Originally from the UK, I moved to South Africa in 2005 and fell in love with the place!

I've renovated a couple spaces, in old buildings, since I arrived. One of which is now my home when I'm in SA.

I work for a global fintech, as one of the representatives in Africa. This means I travel a lot, hence I'm able to make my place available whilst I'm away.

So Airbnb asked me to list 5 things I like. Well, in no particular order...

Building and home renovation. I'm about to start my third renovation in Johannesburg city centre. Have loved creating unique spaces and learning from each project. The fact that these types of building's would be out of my reach, in any major city in Europe or America, makes it that bit more enjoyable.

Music. I have a real passion for music. More playing than making, though I am in the process of learning to play the piano, and was a fairly reasonable DJ in my younger days (does that count as making?). I'm slowly building up my Sonos system (Lego for adults), which is great for filling your home with sounds controlled from the iPad!

Football. Tottenham Hotspurs (Spurs). Yes there are one or two fans outside of Tottenham
