Description

The White Oak Villa is a grand Colonial Revival Victorian home in a private neighborhood just off the Portland Peninsula. Enjoy a house filled with original antique woodwork, countless windows, and enough space for entire families to get lost in.

The White Oak Villa is a majestic old house built in 1901 full of beautiful original woodwork and open inviting spaces, with a grand staircase to greet guests inside the front entrance and a sunny enclosed porch that wraps around most of the house. There are multiple living areas for relaxing or socializing, multiple dining areas, and a well-equipped kitchen in case you want to cook during your stay.

The Master Suite is an extremely roomy space with it's own private bathroom that includes a deep tub and shower. A rounded turret in one corner of the bedroom gives guests a view all the way to the top of Congress Street in Portland with its four oversize curved windows. Enjoy a queen-size bed with the highest quality latex foam mattress and organic bedding. A walk-in closet offers more space for your clothes that you would possibly need for even the longest stay in Portland.

All of the bedrooms are on the second floor of the house, and can be locked for privacy and security. Guests have access to the entire first floor public spaces, which include the kitchen, dining areas, the enclosed porch, and parlors.

The owner lives at the Villa and should usually be available for anything you may need. Since he does work a full-time job, though, check-ins should be coordinated ahead of time to ensure someone is there to welcome you in person when you arrive.

There may be other guests staying at the Villa while you are here, or friends of the owner may be hanging out, sharing food, dancing, listening to music, or even playing music. The Villa is a friendly social space, and you are welcome to join us for anything fun that is going on. You can easily expect to run into wonderful friends you've just never met yet. Don't worry, though, if you prefer your alone time, since the private bedrooms are well situated and separated from the public spaces.

You will be staying in the Deering Highlands neighborhood of Portland, which is a very quiet residential district just outside the peninsula. The Villa is 1 mile from Deering Oaks Park, which hosts Portland's farmer's market, and about 2 miles from the Old Port, which is home to or walking distance from some of the best restaurants in the country along with endless amounts of live music.

Getting In and Out:
The White Oak Villa is 2.5 miles from the Portland Jetport, and only 1.2 miles from the Portland Transportation Center, which is the terminal for the Amtrak Downeaster and the Concord Coach Lines. Taxis, including Uber, are readily available all around Portland.

Getting Around:
For those who like to use public transportation, the Villa is less than 150 meters from one of Portland's main bus lines. For those who drive, there is almost unlimited free street parking in front of the house.

The White Oak Villa is a historic home in a private neighborhood in Portland. We expect all guests to simply

1) Respect the House
2) Respect the Other Guests
and
3) Respect the Neighborhood.

This obviously means do not damage anything in the house (The floors, trim, and other woodwork were installed when William McKinley was president!) and do not take anything from the property that does not belong to you, including food from the kitchen unless you've gotten permission. Remember, other people live here. Be reasonable with noise and clean up after yourself in the public spaces. You are welcome to use the appliances, cookware, and dishes in the kitchen as long as you do not damage or abuse them.

Also note that there is NO SMOKING of any kind on the property.

Joe was great, he added a real personal touch to my first time visit in Maine! Along with his attentiveness and great communication, plus the beautiful house and its prime location, my stay was very pleasant!

Alton is a gracious host and accommodated our late arrival with a smile. He made us feel extremely welcome and helped us with information on our unexpected travel needs to get us out of Portland in the middle of the biggest snow storm of the year. White Oak is a beautiful old home and has been updated just enough to still be comfortable. In fact, we were very impressed at how warm our room was with the 8-10 degree temps outside. Portland is a great town and we will be back. One thing: most Uber cabs were in the $7-$9 range. Still not bad.

When your host bakes fresh sourdough bread for you and makes pancakes to enjoy together, you know you've come to the right place. Alton is a great host and the house is a gem. We had a wonderful time.

Beautiful gem of a home in a fun city. The master suite was spacious and charming, and a good pick for couples or traveled who like more privacy and quiet. It's also perfect for folks who like to tie in history with their travel experiences. Alton was a wonderful and communicative host. When I asked for local adventures he went above and beyond with thoughtful recommendations and travel intel. I would definitely stay there again if given the chance.
